Certification and Qualifications issued by UK Awarding Organisations

The majority of courses that we offer lead to “Certificates of Achievement” or “Ofqual Regulated Qualifications” issued through a UK awarding organisation. All of the certificates and qualifications are accredited according to the levels defined by the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and the level itself identifies the level of difficulty that has been achieved..

As well as the level, any course leading directly to an Ofqual Regulated Qualification will also detail whether the qualification is an Award, Certificate or Diploma based upon its credit value or Total Qualification TIme (TQT).

• Awards (1 to 12 credits - A TQT value of 120 hours or less)• Certificates (13 to 36 credits - A TQT value of 360 hours or less)• Diplomas (37 credits or more - A TQT value of 370 or more hours)

Accreditations issued by Industry Certification Programs

Industry certification programs have been created by organisations to gain relevant qualifications covering their own specific software or technologies. These certificates do not have the same set levels as national certification, and they have been created for a worldwide audience. For example Microsoft, Cisco, CIW, Adobe and nearly all large industry leaders have created their own certification program to cover their applications and skills. Their exams can be sat in most countries around the World through registered testing centres like Pearson Vue or Certiport.

For Example: CompTIA is the world's largest developer of vendor-neutral IT certification exams. Experts and industry leaders from the public and private sectors, including training, academia and government work with CompTIA to develop broad-based, entry level exams that validate an individual's IT skill set.

What is Recognised Certification?

Recognised certification could describe any accredited certification or qualification. This could be an accredited certificate of achievement issued through a UK awarding organisation, an Ofqual regulated qualification listed on the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF), or an industry specific certification program.

Whether a certificate is recognised is largely dependent on what you are using it for and who you are applying to. If you are applying for a particular job or for further education, then they may have very specific prerequisites which should be researched prior to enrolment.

Some job roles (e.g. Teaching Assistant, Child Care Assistant or Health Care Assistant) may require a specific Ofqual regulated qualification, and we always advise researching job roles prior to starting a course to make sure it is suitable for your needs.

• What are the advantages of distance learning?There are many advantages to distance learning, but the main advantages are cost and flexibility. With distance learning, there is no need to attend a classroom, so there is no waste of time or money in commuting to a specific location for your classes. You can learn at your own pace, getting through your course as quickly or as slowly as you please, and of course the costs can also be a lot less!

• How do the courses work?It's really very simple! We supply you with the appropriate study materials which covers a particular certification or exam(s). You will receive your complete course materials as a single package, so you know exactly what you are receiving for your money.. Also, you are supported by a personal tutor to help you get through the course materials should you need any assistance.

• Why are your course fees less than some other companies?Quite simply, because we don't have the high overheads that other companies have. We don't spend thousands of pounds on expensive television or radio campaigns. We don't employ a large sales team or send sales people to your door, and we don't buy mailing lists or email lists to target new customers.

• When can I start?You can start a course at any time. We do not have any set dates for starting a course. As the courses are self-study we can send you the appropriate materials and you can work through at your own pace.

• Will I gain a certificate or qualification?Almost all of our courses lead to accredited certificates of achievement, qualifications or industry-recognised certification. The accreditation information is detailed on each course page. Some courses will include the Certification/Qualification within the course fees, while others will require additional payment for external examinations or tests.

External exam/test fees are not included, as these are optional, and not all students will want to complete them. We do however include all relevant information for booking exams/tests and if possible we will also give the option of purchasing an exam/test voucher to cover their costs. • Will I have a tutor?You will always have access to support by email or by post. With some courses like GCSE's, IGCSE's or A Level's, you will also get telephone support.

• How long do the courses take to complete?Course durations vary from student to student, but you will find a reasonable estimate of course durations expressed in applied learning hours on each course page.

• Can I pay in instalments?Yes, we offer interest free instalment plans to help students spread the cost of their course fees. We allow you to spread your payments over 4 months on any course, and you can find the payment plan on each individual course page. The first payment will be taken on the day we process your application, and the additional 3 monthly payments will be taken on or around the same date for the following 3 months. In some cases we can also allow you to spread payments over 6 monthly payments. Please email us on [email protected] if you would like to discuss this option.

• Will I get a job on completion of the course?We cannot guarantee that students will be qualified to work in a specific job role after completing a course. Each job is different and will ask for specific skills and qualifications. All we can guarantee is that on successfully completing the course you can gain the corresponding certificate of achievement or qualification. We advise prospective job hunters to research available jobs in their area to see what skills/qualifications are required.

• What if I am not entirely happy with my course materials?If you change your mind or you are not happy with your course materials when they arrive then simply let us know! All purchases are subject to the Consumer Contract Regulations, and with the exception of digital licenses they have a 14 day cancellation policy so if you are not satisfied with your course, you can swap it for another or return it for a no questions asked refund

• Can I do the courses overseas?Yes. However, there will be additional postage and packing fees for sending courses to countries outside of the UK and all International course fees have to be paid in full. You should contact a course advisor on [email protected] for a quote.

The new GCSE and IGCSE grades system

The latest GCSE and IGCSE specifications use a new grading structure. Previously grades would be set at A* to G grade with C or above being considered a pass, but the new grading structure is set at 9 to 1 with 9 being the highest grade. A “standard pass“ under the new structure would be considered as 4.

Finding Exam Centres

It is the student’s responsibility to arrange their own examinations. There are plenty of centres available, and as a registered student you could speak to an exam officer for guidance. If you want to locate centres prior to enrolment then we advise contacting your local schools and colleges, or you can search for centres on the Awarding Bodies websites. IGCSE

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) was originally created over 25 years ago for international students as an English language curriculum to help prepare for the International B accalaureate, A Level or BTEC Level 3. The qualification was taken on in preference to the GCSE by many independent schools in the UK due, to its similarity to the older GCE O-Level and because it is predominantly exam-based. IGCSE qualifications are widely recognised as being an equivalent to the GCSE.

GCSE

The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is an academic level 1 or level 2 qualification (depending on your grade) awarded in a specific individual subject. In the UK (excluding Scotland), secondary school students will complete a set amount of GCSEs usually over a two-year period, although these qualifications are also suitable for adult returners. GCSEs are the usual preparation for students progressing onto A Levels and remain an important prerequisite for a wide range of job roles and further education programmes.

Special Requirements

• You can start a GCSE or IGCSE course at any time, although you can only sit your examination in an appropriate examination window (usually May/June of each year). There are closing dates set by course tutors for students aiming towards each exam window. The nearest examination window we can accept students for is May/June 2021, and the closing date for students aiming for this exam window is 15 November 2020.• All AQA specification GCSE examinations have to be sat in the UK as a private candidate. A Level Courses

The Advanced Level (A Level) is considered to be the gold standard of the British educational system. A Level’s are level 3 qualifications awarded in a specific individual subject. A Level’s are the most common qualification needed to progress onto university, and within schools they are usually studied over a two-year period, although it is possible to complete studies within a single year, sitting all examinations in a single examination window.

All A Level's have now been changed from modular to linear specifications. These new linear specifications require students to sit all of their exams in a single exam window on completion of their studies.

In the new linear specifications, the AS Level is considered a separate qualification to the A Level although it does still cover what is taught within the first half of an A Level specification.

What are the requirements for becoming a teaching assistant?

Teaching assistants should possess a number of personal qualities. They need strong communication skills, so that they can work effectively with children, teachers and parents alike. They should be organised, and be a good team worker. And, as with anyone who works with children, they will need a lot of patience and understanding!

While there are no national minimum requirements for becoming a teaching assistant, you are a lot more likely to find employment if you have some experience working with children. If you don’t already, you might want to consider volunteering in a school or with a youth group as a way of gaining relevant experience.

Courses that don’t require a placement...

At Distance Learning Centre, we offer a range of courses suitable for complete beginners. The Teaching Assistant – Level 2 Course provides an introduction to the principles and practices of the teaching assistant role. Another popular course is the Support Work in Schools – CACHE Level 2 Award (RQF) Course which is available for anyone interested in working in a school setting, and leads directly to an RQF listed qualification, but don’t require a work placement.

CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) is a vendor-neutral web design and technologies certification programme ran by Certification Partners. CIW qualifications are designed for professionals who are looking to gain entry or continue their path into the Web Design industry.

Since its inception in 1997, more than 1 million students and professionals have gained CIW Certification worldwide. CIW curriculum focuses on the initial standards and job skills that enable the Internet to function, including Programming skills, web development, web security, networking and databases.

The CIW Web Foundations Associate Course is the beginner level CIW course. The course is divided into three sections and students who have completed this course will have shown an understanding of Internet business, data networking and Web site design. It is possible to take each of the subjects as an associate level exam although as this is a foundation level certification, we recommend sitting the complete Web Foundations Associate exam.

The CIW Web Design Specialist Course and CIW E-Commerce Specialist Course are part of the CIW Web Design Professional Certification curriculum. Although tehse exams are still available we don’t recommend these courses as they are due to be retired.
