AcademicsThe Appalachian Difference

Many of Appalachian’s unique academic programs highlight the special connection to the people and places of the mountain community it serves.

Appalachian State University was the first higher education institution in the U.S. to offer degree programs in renewable energy and sustainable development. The university protects the area’s natural beauty by implementing renewable energy systems on campus, building energy-efficient buildings and committing to compost, recycle, turn off lights and use green cleaning products.

Students at Appalachian receive individual attention and mentorship from leading experts in their fields. Ninety-nine percent of Appalachian’s full-time faculty hold doctorate, first professional degree, or other terminal degree.
