101 Dalmatians Summary

In a loving home on the edge of Regents Park in the City of London, Dalmatian parents Pongo and Perdita live with their human pets: Roger, a composer, and Anita, an artist. Together with the help of the warm and caring Nanny, they all pitch in to raise Pongo and Perdita’s 15 adorable puppies. One important thing to know about these precious pups is that they would do just about anything for a handful of their all-time favorite snack, delicious Kanine Krunchies. They cannot help but lick their lips every time they hear the catchy Kanine Krunchies jingle. One day, their fabulously rich neighbor, the mean and nasty Cruella De Vil, stops by to pay Roger and Anita a visit. When Cruella spots the puppies and their beautiful fur, her wicked wheels start turning. You see, Cruella has always wanted a black-spotted fur coat! Outraged when Roger refuses to sell his pets, Cruella begins an evil plot to steal the puppies with the help of her bumbling henchmen, Horace and Jasper. Cruella knows exactly how to lure the puppies away from their home and into her fur vault—by using their one weakness, Kanine Krunchies. While Cruella daydreams about her stunning new coat, the dogs of London arrive just in time to rescue the puppies from her evil clutches. With the help of the resourceful cat, Sergeant Tibbs, these clever canines save the 15 puppies and many more! But how will Roger and Anita find a home for 101 Dalmatians? Enjoy the show and find out!

Next time you watch Disney’s 101 Dalmatians be sure to look for any spots in the shape of the Disney icon Mickey Mouse. Nearly every dog in the movie wears a Mickey shaped spot!

101 Dalmatians Movie Facts

You have probably heard about Pongo, Perdita, and their little pups before. Perhaps you have seen these delightful doggies on your own television screen. But, have you ever thought about how these characters came to be? The story of the 101 Dalmatians came from a book written by Dodie Smith. Smith owned a pet Dalmatian named Pongo, as well as nine Dalmatian puppies. She came up with this famous tale when her neighbor told her that the Dalmatians would make a lovely coat! The creation of the animated classic, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, required a huge amount of time and a lot of hard work. In fact, it took nearly three years to create! Unlike many of the Disney movies you see today (which use computers to do the drawing), 101 Dalmatians took 300 artists to illustrate. Over three years, these artists used 1,218,750 pencils! Though this hand drawing method was not uncommon, the specific animation style of 101 Dalmatians set the film apart from previous Disney creations. This new style was called xerography. Another Disney movie, Sleeping Beauty, came to theaters in 1959, two years before 101 Dalmatians. Even though Sleeping Beauty is popular now, this movie made very little money at the box office. Because it was so expensive to make, a new method of drawing had to be found—xerography. This technology gave animators the ability to Xerox (copy) an original drawing to film instead of having to draw it by hand. This saved a lot of time! And 101 Dalmatians was a big hit when it came out in 1961.

Did You Know...

There are a total of 6,469,952 spots in the animated movie.

The car chase in the movie was actually created by filming live action model cars!

London, England!

London is the capital city of England.

Location, Location, Location

The city is located in the southeast of England on the Thames (pronounced “Temz”), which is the longest river in England. London has the most people of any city in the whole European Union, and is also the 9th largest city in the world. People from all over the world live in London. The city’s population of 7,556,900 speaks over 300 languages!

Weather You Like it Or Not…

If you visit London, you might find yourself singing “rain, rain, go away” because it rains almost all year round. London only has 61 days of sun per year! London has a temperate marine climate, which means that it is rarely very hot and rarely very cold. How does this compare with Missouri’s climate? Look it up!

All the World’s a Stage

…Or at least most of London is! Did you know there are over 100 theatres in the city of London? Of course, maybe we should expect this from a city that housed one of the most well-known playwrights of all time, William Shakespeare. You can still see Shakespeare’s famous plays, Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet, at a London theatre today, as well as right here in St. Louis.

P inkies Up!

If you have ever wanted to attend a real tea party, then England is the place for you. The average Englishman drinks more tea than anyone anywhere else in the world. The English drink 20 times more tea than Americans! On the other hand, our food is somewhat alike. For example, if you visit London you might see the familiar golden arches of McDonald’s. While the London menu has cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets, you might be surprised to find that it also includes the Fish Finger Happy Meal. This is McDonald’s version of the classic English fish and chips (deep fried battered fish and potato pieces like fries). Would you like to try a fish stick happy meal?

Oh the Places You’ll Go!

The well-known landmarks of London draw many tourists, making it one of the most visited cities in the world. On your trip to London, you might check the time on the famous clock tower, Big Ben. Or perhaps you might catch a glimpse of the royal family at Buckingham Palace while you watch the changing of the guard (when a new guard comes on duty). You could end your London visit with a trip to the London Eye, the world’s largest Ferris wheel. On a clear day, you can see as far as 25 miles from the top of the London Eye. The

wheel measures 443 feet from end to end. What a perfect way to see London and conquer a fear of heights!

Activity

Learn more about London and England by taking a virtual trip through the city! On the internet you can “visit” many famous and not-so-famous sites through pictures and by reading about their history and the city’s important landmarks. Download some pictures and compile a travelogue of your experiences by writing about your favorite locales and cutting and pasting images. Maybe someday soon you’ll get to visit England, but for now, this is the next best thing!

Sparky Notes

Perhaps you have heard of Sparky the famous fire dog, but did you know that Dalmatians actually held significant responsibilities in firehouses long ago? Dalmatians were often found running next to horses to test their speed and endurance, which opened up the opportunity for their career as “fire dogs.” Dalmatians lived in stables with the horses at the fire stations, and when the alarm bell sounded they led the carriages through the streets to the scene of the fire. With the use of fire trucks, as opposed to carriages, Dalmatians often enjoyed a ride on the top of the fire engine acting as the

mascot for many fire departments. Fun Fact: Did you know that Dalmatians also served an important purpose during World War II? Their intelligence was put to good use as they carried secret

messages and emergency supply kits to soldiers.

May I have your Attention Please?

Much like the puppies seen onstage, real Dalmatians have big personalities. They are playful, dignified, and never show signs of shyness. Dalmatians thoroughly enjoy being the center of attention and crave affection from everyone around them. In fact, if you show them enough love, they may even show off their famous Dalmatian smile. Those who wish to own a Dalmatian must be prepared to spend quality time with their pup, because these dogs love nothing more than being by their owner’s side. These intelligent dogs grow bored which causes them to need stimulating activities. If a Dalmatian feels neglected, it could become rambunctious or destructive. For this reason, many Dalmatians end up in animal shelters, because owners fail to prepare themselves for the time commitment required to properly raise a happy Dalmatian. If given proper attention, however, these dogs can be the most loyal, loving, and playful pets imaginable. Their love for people and playful nature makes Dalmatians perfectly fit the definition of man’s best friend.

Fun Fact: Did you know that some Dalmatians are circus performers? They perform all types of tricks, such as jumping through hoops, climbing ladders, and even walking the tightrope. This is perfect for a pet that loves to be the center of attention. Dalmatians are even said to be natural clowns, thanks to their very playful personalities.

Learn the Facts

You have seen them on stage and screen, but how much do you know about our spotted friend the Dalmatian? Here are a few facts about the breed: Average Height: 18-28 inches Average Weight: 50-65 pounds Coat: A Dalmatian’s coat sets this breed apart from other dogs. They have a short coat which is white with black or dark brown spots. Though their hair is very short, these dogs tend to shed quite a bit, so owners must be prepared to vacuum! Average Life Span: 12 years (That’s 84 in dog years!)

Fun Fact: Dalmatian puppies are born with solid white coats. They “grow” their spots when they get older.

This is where the word canine comes from—another name for “man’s best friend”! Champion: The ultimate winner Cruel: Causing suffering and pain Genuine: Real and true, not fake Inspiration: A feeling that makes you want to do something, like seeing a pretty sunset may give you the idea to paint a picture Nutritious: The puppies say their favorite snack is nutritious Kanine Krunchies, meaning a snack that is healthy and good for the puppies. Just like fruits and vegetables are good for people! Racket: A racket is a kind of paddle used in tennis, badminton, and lots of other sports. But the word can also mean a really loud, annoying noise, like banging pots and pans. Sensation: A feeling of great excitement, or a big hit! Sublime: Totally awesome, outstanding Suburb: A town just on the edge of a big city Telegraph: A way to send messages using electrical pulses over a wire. People sent messages by telegraph before there were cell phones. Twilight: The time between sunset and nightfall, when the sun is below the horizon, but the sky is still light

It takes many people with different skills working together to create a successful theatre production. One very important member of the production team is the costume designer. A costume designer works closely with the director and set designers to create a “world” for the play. Costume designers do a lot of reading and research before they begin drawing. They must study the play, its characters, and the time period in which the action occurs. As clothing communicates a lot about a character— who would Cruella be without her luxurious fur coats?!—costumes help tell the story as much as the set and props. After much research, a costume designer draws sketches of the costumes called “renderings”. Renderings show the director and the costume shop staff exactly how the actors’ clothing should look.

Meet the costume designer for Disney’s 101 Dalmatians: Brad Musgrove Brad began his career in the theatre business as a professional dancer. He danced in many shows on Broadway and he even performed at STAGES ST. LOUIS in A Chorus Line in 2000. Brad began his career as a costume designer when he retired from professional dancing. Brad loves being a part of the theatre, and designing costumes gives him a way to stay involved. What made you decide to become a costume designer? When I moved to New York, my mom sent me with an old sewing machine and I decided to teach myself to sew. After I got the hang of it, I began making dance clothes for myself, because I could never find exactly what I wanted in the stores. Eventually word traveled that I had this skill and I began

making dance clothes for my friends and other dancers. How did you train to become a costume designer? Anytime I was in a show my favorite part was always the costume fittings (when actors try on costumes to make sure the size is right). In my later years of performing, I began assisting the costume designers of the shows I was in with costume assembly. How did you come up with the costumes for the puppies in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians? When I talked with the director of the show, Michael Hamilton, he said he wanted the play to take place sometime between the 1930s - 1950s. I decided I didn’t want to just make animal costumes, but instead spotted clothing that fit that time period in London. And actors can’t sing and dance if moving like real dogs! Along with their spotted outfits, we added ears, tails, and dog tags to help create the puppy look. Did you enjoy designing costumes for the villain of the show, Cruella De Vil?

Cruella’s costumes were some of my favorites to design. When I pictured Cruella, I wanted her to be completely over the top. I had the idea to have Cruella covered in fur during the entire show. This helps show the audience her outrageous personality.
