What is in the English 3102C Study Guide?The English 3102C Study Guide describes all the work that is required for the completion of thiscourse. There are 3 separate Units in this course - they are listed in the Table of Contents above(page 2).

How Should I Use the Study Guide?Before beginning to do the work in this Study Guide, you will need to talk to your instructorabout the course and the resources you will need to complete the work for the course.

The Study Guide provides important information and guidance which you will need to completeEnglish 3102C. You should work through the Study Guide page by page, consulting withyour instructor as you go.

How is the Study Guide organized?The Study Guide is organized in two columns, as follows:

Guidelines and Suggestions

The reading material on essays providesinformation which will help you read all non-fiction texts. It also provides detailed guidancefor reading different types of essays. Youshould study the material, read the sampleessays, and complete the exercises included inthe assigned pages. Your instructor willintroduce you to this and will guide youthrough the reading and exercises.

The reading material on media providesspecific guidance for reading newspapers,magazines and visual media. There arereproductions of newspaper and magazinepages which you will need to study verycarefully and discuss with your instructor.

You should select short non-fiction texts basedon your personal interest, but you may needguidance from your instructor to select textswhich are suited to your reading level. Sometexts in Passages 12 are more difficult to readthan others.

To make your selection from Passages 12, youshould look in the “Alternate Table ofContents”, page 7 under Non-fiction.

Land, Sea and Time, Book 3 provides anumber of short non-fiction texts, many ofwhich are about the Newfoundland andLabrador heritage and culture. You shouldskim the entire book to find non-fiction textsthat are of interest or special significance toyou. You will need to decide whether aparticular text is fiction or non-fiction beforemaking your selection, since the Land, Sea andTime books are not organized by genre. Youmay ask your instructor for guidance withyour selection.

You should read each of your selections atleast twice - first for enjoyment and second forinterpreting and answering questions. Yourinstructor will discuss the selection with you orarrange for you to discuss it with others whoare reading the same selection.

For selections from Passages 12, you shouldanswer all the questions in the ExploringMeaning section following the text. If thereare questions on Language Conventions orTechnique and Style, you should answerthose as well. Your instructor may also assignquestions from the other sections.

For selections from Land, Sea and Time, yourinstructor will provide you with all thequestions.

As with the first non-fiction text you read, yourinstructor will give you guidance as youanalyze each selection. You should notattempt to answer questions until you havediscussed each selection with your instructorand, where possible, with others who are alsoreading the selection.

You will have already read the pages fromGuide to Language, Literature and Media inRequired Work 1 and some of the pages fromCommunicate! in English 2102A; a review ofthem now will help you to interpret the photoessay.

These readings provide an overview of themany types of visuals and graphic aids that youmay encounter in your reading. Throughclosely studying this material, you will bebetter prepared to understand and interpretcartoons, photographs, posters, advertisements,and other types of print visuals. You shoulddiscuss this material with your instructorbefore beginning the other work in this sectionof the course.

Your instructor will arrange for you to discussthe photo essay. If there are others reading theessay at the same time, you may be required toparticipate in a small group discussion. If not,you may discuss the photo essay with yourinstructor.

Your instructor will give you guidance as youanalyze the photo essay. You should notattempt to answer questions until you havediscussed the essay with your instructor and,where possible, with others who are alsoreading/viewing the essay.

Viewing and Interpreting Cartoons8. Select a cartoon from a textbook or from acurrent newspaper. Interpret the cartoon byanswering the following questions:

Reading Newspapers9. Select and read at least three current articlesfrom regional, provincial or nationalnewspapers.

Guidelines and Suggest ions

You may select a cartoon based on personalinterest. It may be an editorial cartoon whichhas a social or political message or it may be inthe form of a comic strip. Editorial cartoonswould be selected from a current newspaper.Comic strip cartoons could also be selectedfrom a current newspaper or from one of yourtexts. Communicate! has several cartoonsfrom which you might select one (for example,see pages 28, 158, 208, 260, 264).

Your instructor will provide you withnewspapers from which you can select articlesbased on personal interest.

Your instructor will also arrange for you todiscuss each article. This will give you anopportunity to express your opinion on acurrent issue and to find out how others feelabout the same issue.

Your instructor will give you guidance inanalyzing the articles. You may be required toanswer questions either verbally or in writing.

These reading assignments provideinformation on all aspects of the researchprocess, including:• choosing and narrowing your topic• making a research plan• selecting and evaluating sources ofinformation• organizing information and taking notes • interpreting visual aids and using them inyour writing• citing sources• avoiding plagiarism

Your instructor will introduce you to each ofthese steps in the research process and willguide you through the reading material.

You should study all of the assigned readingmaterial before you begin your research andtake notes on sections which you think will beespecially useful to you as you do yourresearch.

You should refer back to sections of thereading material as you need it in yourresearch, note taking and writing.

To prepare for evaluating the sources ofinformation you are considering using for yourresearch, you should re-read pages 327-330 ofGuide to Language, Literature and Media,“Evaluating Sources”.

Some of the sources you may look at will notbe suitable for your research. While mostpublished books can be counted on to bereliable sources of information, they may notbe up to date. You should look at the originaldate of publication of all materials you plan touse. Some published materials may also bebiased or one-sided in their approach to a topicor issue.

There are many Internet sites which would notbe reliable sources of information at all, so it isvery important for you to understand how toevaluate an Internet site. “Evaluating Sources”(pages 327-330 of Guide to Language,Literature, and Media) provides goodinformation for the evaluation of Internet sites.You should discuss this information with yourinstructor and practice accessing Internet sitesfor evaluation purposes.

Your instructor will provide you with guidancein selecting sources. As a part of yourevaluation of your sources, you should askyourself the following questions:

Is the source sufficiently related to yourtopic?Is the source up to date?Is the source reliable?Is the source biased or one-sided?

3. Compile the information you have gatheredand organize it in preparation for writing yourresearch paper.

Guidelines and Suggest ions

You should keep an ongoing list of all thesources you read that will be included in yourresearch paper in any way. This is importantbecause when you write the paper, you maynot be able to locate exactly the source youused. Also, if you need to go back to re-readsomething, this list will be very useful to you.

When you list your sources, you shouldinclude all the information you would need tocite them properly in your research paper. Pages 177-182 of Communicate! tell you whatinformation you will need to include.

You should take careful notes as you readthrough the material which you will be usingfor your research paper. Your instructor willgive you guidelines for making notes and willprovide you with guidance as you read throughyour sources and decide what information toinclude in your notes.

When you have completed all your reading andnote taking, you are ready to begin planningyour research paper. You should create anoutline for your paper and discuss it with yourinstructor before beginning to write the paper.

Writing a Research Paper4. Write a composition of at least 750 words(approximately 3 typewritten pages, doublespaced) based on your research.

4.1 Cite sources accurately in the compositionand in a reference list at the end of thecomposition.

Write at least two rough drafts of your researchpaper, revising to make sure that you havemade your meaning clear. You may choose touse word processing for all drafts. Discussyour work with your instructor as you reviseand make changes. Edit and proofread yourcomposition to correct errors in spelling,grammar and punctuation.

Your instructor will provide guidance with theformatting of your paper, including the coverpage and citation of sources.

Unit 3 of this course (Writing Conventions,Required Work 5 and 6) provides instructionand practice on format and punctuationelements related to quoting and citing sources. Your instructor will assign some of this workfor you to do before you begin the final draft ofyour research paper.

Pages 253-260 of Communicate! were requiredreading in Unit 2 of English 2102C, but you should go over this material once again withyour instructor before you begin planning theoral presentation of your research paper. Yourinstructor may be able to suggest practices andactivities which will help you gain confidencein public speaking.

You should discuss with your instructor whatdifferent visual aids or other presentation aidsmay be available for you to use to make yourpresentation more effective.

You should ensure:• that your presentation is clearly organized;• that you select and use appropriatepresentation aids; and•that you engage the audience in your subject.

You should also ensure that you observe theconventions of effective oral presentation,including:•maintaining eye contact with audience•using appropriate posture and movement forgetting your message across•speaking clearly •timing your presentation appropriately

The oral presentation of your research shouldbe of at least 10 minutes duration. Yourinstructor will provide guidance withdetermining how much material you will needfor this amount of time.

These pages in Communicate! provide youwith information about both the letter ofapplication and the resume. They also providea sample of both. You should discuss thismaterial with your instructor before beginningyour resume and letter of application.

It is very important that you gather all theinformation you will require before you beginto write your resume. Your instructor willgive you guidance as you gather thisinformation and make notes for the preparationof a resume.

There are many different formats for resumes. Communicate! provides one sample resume(page 204). Your instructor will help youdetermine if this is the best type of resume foryou to use, given your particular workexperience and skills. If another type would bebetter, your instructor will provide you with asample to follow.

When you have selected a format for yourresume, you should follow that format exactlyas it is presented in the sample you are using.

Your resume will be assessed for content aswell as format, so you should take care incompiling and organizing your information toensure that it is appropriate and accurate. Youshould edit and proofread the resume throughseveral drafts. Discuss each draft with yourinstructor.

Your letter of application should be written inthe full block format as set out in the sampleletter on page 201of Communicate!. Youshould write several drafts of your letter as youedit and proofread. Discuss each draft withyour instructor. Your letter will be assessedfor content as well as format, so you shouldtake care with the language and tone andensure that your spelling, grammar andpunctuation are accurate.

You will have participated in a mock jobinterview in English 2102C. If you plan onusing your resume and letter of application toactually apply for a job, you may want toreview the material on job interviews that youstudied previously.

Your instructor will guide you throughpracticing these functions in word processingand recognizing that you cannot always rely onthem, but must use your own knowledge andjudgement. This may be done as you use wordprocessing for the written compositions in thiscourse as well as for the resume and letter.

Your instructor will provide you withinformation about each element of WritingConventions (Required Work 5 and 6) to bestudied in this Unit. You should be sure thatyou understand how each of the elementsstudied relates to your own writing. Several ofthe elements studied in this Unit relate directlyto quoting and citing sources in your researchpaper, so you will be expected to apply theknowledge gained here to your work in Unit 2.

Your instructor will give you practiceexercises for each of 5.1 and 6.1. Yourperformance on the practice exercises will becounted for a small part of your mark for thiscourse. More weight will be given to yourability to demonstrate that you haveunderstood these Writing Conventions byusing them correctly in your essays andcompositions, answers to questions onliterature, and formal correspondence.
