STUDY GROUP TOMIKI AIKIDO – Friday 15th May, 2015

Today we were joined by members from Bulgaria, Spain, Switzerland and England UK.

We looked at in some detail the position and placement of the leading foot in terms of the

overall stability of the whole body.

This evolved into the idea of gripping the mat with the feet, rather like the TomTom

Navigator windscreen fixing.

This concept also applies to the shape of the "Cupped" hand when locating with the chin (in

this case) of your partner.

This clearly also applies to the elbow and other areas/joints of your partner.

We used the combination of Outside Turn and Inside Sweep to form a pair orientated

exercise, which stimulated whole body movement, giving and receiving etc.

In this reciprocal study opportunities for Oshitaoshi and Kotegashi soon evolved.

Some study of soft-touch was explored when applied to Shomenate and Gyakugamaeate.

STUDY GROUP TOMIKI AIKIDO – Saturday 16th May, 2015

We started our session at 2.00pm with Kiko exercises and continued with pair exercises

based around Outside Turn and Inside Sweep.

This led us to make a start on Junanahon Ura Waza techniques. Some interesting ideas

evolved as we focused on their depth and not so much on the Choreography.

We finished early so that we could spend time commemorating the life of Christian

Gaddam, a Study Group member who died suddenly recently.

under Master Isamu Uehara.

He practised and studied throughout

his life Jujitsu, Judo, Karate, Tomiki

Aikido, Boxing, Wrestling, Tenshin

Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, Muso

Shinden Ryu Jodo, Yoseikan Aiki-

Jujitsu, Kobudo, Kendo and probably

many more Martial Arts.

You will be deeply missed.

REMEMBERING CHRISTIAN BY FUMIAKI SHISHIDA SHIHAN

I am glad to know that you organized a

memorial service for him Eddy.

Yoko and I talked a lot last night

remembering our memory with him in

Tokyo.

We thought that he behaved

magnificently not be troubled us when he

was with us.

In fact, he was a very kind person, so he

was liked by everyone he met.

Old ladies liked him very much so they

hired him as an English instructor.

They also asked private things to him, like

changing the light bulb.

One day, he told us happily that they thanked him very much and payed 10000 yen for his effort.

We miss him.

Afterwards we all went for a meal at Den Tir Restaurant Antwerp.

STUDY GROUP TOMIKI AIKIDO Sunday 17th May 2015

We started the session at 10.00am with Kiko exercises and with detailed explanations.

Once more we worked on our pair exercise using Outside Turn and Inside Sweep. The focus

this morning was about both participants stretching in a complementary way.

This conveniently led us to the solo exercise of Inside Sweep Turn, a sequence omitted from

the currently preferred Tegatana Doza movements.

Here the stretching of the body is important in order to effectively turn under the raised

hand.

This solo exercise is fundamental to the final two techniques of the Junanahon Ura Waza.

We continued to study these at length, reinforcing various important elements.

Push through the body not just at the point of contact.

To demonstrate this principle one partner opened their arms in a "crucifix" position whilst

the other pushed through the shoulder line. If the focus is on the point of contact (the

hand), the resistance to movement is greater than if the focus is on the opposite hand. It is

as if there is an internal line through the arm, shoulders and arm to the farthest hand. The

mind must focus on the distant hand and not on the touched hand.

Finally we looked at the presentation.

Grasp the movement, not the posture!

To understand this is important as the two approaching players make physical contact.

There must be no delay to allow the posture to settle.

Congratulations Nadja Van Sandt on reaching brown belt at the Study Group Grading this

weekend!
