A Centre of Business and Finance
With the Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 substantially represented, Shanghai is a global city of commerce. The Lujiazui financial district is the driving force that helps rank Shanghai as one of Asia's top financial powerhouses alongside Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. Business and trade exhibitions are a common occurrence and very informative.
An Engineer's Playground
Engineering and architecture are booming industries in Shanghai. The 632-metre Shanghai Tower, one of three super-tall skyscrapers in Pudong, is slated for completion in 2014- it will be the tallest building in Shanghai and second tallest in the world. Shanghai also boasts over 30 economic and technological development zones where manufacturing flourishes.
A Full Events Calendar
Myriad PR, advertising, media and event companies servicing the fashion, luxury and entertainment industries call Shanghai home. So do the largest British and American chambers of commerce in mainland China, as well as numerous entrepreneurial and business organisations which run regular events. Many offer student discount or student memberships.

Shanghai Attractions Whether your interests are of the artistic, musical, athletic, academic, tourist or leisurely kind, you will find plenty of things to do and see in Shanghai. Thirteen Metro lines, two airports, four railway stations and numerous local and long-distance bus stations make city transit and travel throughout China and Southeast Asia very convenient.
Sightseeing
View Shanghai's famous skyline from the historic Bund, a walkway of old European style commerce buildings bordering the Huangpu River. From here, you can also glimpse the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower and other glistening towers of Pudong. For a panoramic view of the city, you can climb to the top of the Lupu Bridge or head up to the observation deck at the Pearl Tower, Jinmao Tower or Shanghai World Financial Centre.
Historic Shanghai
Looking for Shanghai's past? Swing by the Vuyuan Gardens and wander the streets of Old Shanghai. Take a stroll through the tree-lined neighbourhood surrounding our campus- the European architecture dates from the early 1900s-or stroll along the Old Bund and hear the carillon at the Peace Hotel. A short trip outside of the city proper will get you to Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town best known for its bridges built during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Shopping
If shopping is your thing, Shanghai is your paradise. Shopping malls are a dime a dozen across the city and boast all the top brands from Asia and the West. Test your bargaining skills at one of Shanghai's many markets- favourites include the Shiliupu Fabric Market, Hongqiao Bird and Flower Market, Dongtai Lu Antique Market, 3 Yeh Optical Market (glasses for RMB150!) and the "fake" markets Taobao City and the Yatai Shenghui Fashion and Gifts Market
Dining and Nightlife
Shanghai has a fantastic array of restaurants representing all manner of regional Chinese and international fare. Trendy cafe, restaurant and bar hubs include Xintiandi, Taikang Lu, Yongkang Lu, Yongfu Lu, Wulumuqi Lu and Anfu Lu, or you can check out one of Shanghai's food streets, Shouning Lu or Dingxi Lu. Clubs and bars are abundant across the city. While Shanghai is well-known for its DJ scene, live music in the form of jazz, cover bands, rock and more can be found as well. KTV (karaoke) is a popular pastime, so warm up your vocal cords.
Galleries and Museums
Art galleries abound in Shanghai. Easy places to start are Taikang Lu and Moganshan Lu (for small, independent galleries), as well as the Shanghai Art Museum and Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum (for large public exhibitions). Also check out the Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Urban Planning Centre (a scale model of Shanghai, updated daily). The Jing'an, Longhua and Jade Buddha Temples are also worth a visit.
