Goodbye to a Professor and Colleague
CEIT Student Advisory BoardThe CEIT Student Advisory Board (CSAB) mission is
to provide a student perspective in the review and
assessment of the CEIT programs, services, and
laboratories. CSAB provides the CEIT department
feedback and recommendations for possible
improvements and establishes a unified voice for student
concerns and suggestions.
CSAB met twice last year to discuss the programs and
offerings of CEIT. A lot of positive feedback was given
and several new ideas were suggested. Thank you to our
2009–10 CSAB members Jacob Pitcher (CPET), Jenkia
Laird (CPET), Eric Kinzie (CPET), Brad Sorenson (CPET),
Ben Ashby (IST), Jennie Simon (IST), and David Campbell
(ECET) for serving on the CSAB board last year. We are
looking forward to another great year and receiving
feedback from our CSAB members.
Students Learn Through Co-opCo-op is short for cooperative education, a nationally recognized academic training program that involves partnerships between students, employers, and IPFW. Students receive a competitive wage and earn academic credit while working two or more semesters with an employer from Greater Fort Wayne or even from another state. In the 2009–10 academic year, the CEIT department had 11 students in the Co-op program in such companies as Lincoln Food Service, Regal Beloit, Advanced Assembly, DePuy, and NASA. If you or your employer is interested in learning more about hiring a Co-op student, please contact Bob Barrett for information systems ([email protected]) or Gary Steffen for CPET/ECET ([email protected]). This can be a wonderful experience for both the employer and student employee.

New Department, New NameAs of fall 2008, a new department was created, which consists of the old Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) and the information systems (IST) program. The new department officially became known as the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering Technology & Information Systems and Technology (CEIT). CEIT is the result of realignment among academic programs within the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science (ETCS). During the reshuffling, IST was moved from the Department of Computer Science (CS) and merged with the EET and CPET programs. The information technology (ITC) program will also reside in CEIT. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) is expected to approve this degree later this year. Associate Professor Gary Steffen was named the chair of CEIT in July 2008.
CEITbitsCollege of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science (ETCS) News and information
from the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering Technology & Information Systems
and Technology
Our Growing DepartmentSince its inception, CEIT has seen a rise in popularity
and significant growth in student enrollment. During fall
semester 2010, students generated more than 2,300
credit hours within the department, compared to only
1,614 during fall semester 2008. Future
growth is anticipated as programs change, the
Information Technology program is added, and new
transfer agreements with Ivy Tech Community
College–Northeast are initiated. It is also refreshing
to see a sibling, spouse, son, or daughter of an CEIT
alumnus begin his or her collegiate path through
the CEIT department.
M.S. in Technology Awards First DegreesWe would like to extend our congratulations to the first graduates of the M.S. in Technology. The first degrees were awarded in summer 2009 to Josh Prowant and Elhadi Eloma, both specializing in the IT/Advanced Computer Applications concentration. Since that time, Murali Tokona (IT/Advanced Computer Applications) and Krishna Maleswara and Travis Johnson (both IT/Manufacturing) have also completed degrees. The M.S. in Technology is a flexible, creative program that prepares qualified students and working professionals to face the challenges of global-technical competive workforce. The graduate program allows degree specialization in the following two technical areas: IT/Advanced Computer Applications and IT/Manufacturing.
For further information about our graduate program, please contact Assistant Professor Hongli Luo, interim graduate director, at [email protected] or visit www.etcs.ipfw.edu/mstech/index.shtml.

Industrial Advisory Committee MeetingThe CEIT Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC) met on March 19 and was
hosted by United Technologies Electronic Controls Plant in Huntington,
Ind. The committee consists of industry professionals—some of whom
are IPFW alumni—from local companies that hire our graduates. The
committee meets annually to bring industry members up to date on the
CPET/ECET curriculums, trends, and educational outcomes. News from
the College of ETCS and IPFW is also shared. The industry members, in
turn, provide feedback to the department on curriculum, their company,
and industrial happenings. Breakout sessions were organized for CPET
and ECET in order to gain insight on those curriculums, with respect to
specific industry needs.
We are currently in the process of creating a Professional Advisory
Board (PAB) for the information systems and information technology
degree programs. If your company is interested in joining the IS/IT PAB
or the IAC group, please contact Michelle Parker at [email protected].
Updated Information Systems Program Launched Fall 2010 After a one-year effort, CEIT is very excited to launch a revamped information systems (IST) degree program for fall semester 2010. The new degree program was designed around the Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems, ACM/AIS, with input from the Information Systems Curriculum Committee. Highlights of the revised IS program:
Seven new classes added to the program:
• Foundations of IS• Enterprise systems• Data and information• IT architecture• Business process management• Human computer interaction• Security
The programming requirement has been restructured. Two semesters of Visual Basic and one semester of Java are now required instead of three semester of Java and one semester of Visual Basic.
A concentration or minor is required in the program. This allows our students to focus deeper into a supporting area of IS that interests them.
Choices:
• Minor in business• Minor in computer science• Minor in organizational leadership and supervision• Certificate in computer networking• Concentration in databases• Concentration in network administration
We still offer both associate (A.S.) and bachelor’s (B.S.) programs. We have added an 18 credit hour minor in information systems.
