Absences

Parents must submit, fax, or e-mail a note to the attendance office within five (5) school days for the

student’s absence to be considered excused. Attendance Fax Number: 678-341-6491 or Attendance

e-mail: [email protected] The note must include the student’s name, the date(s) of

absence(s), and the reason for the absence. The principal may require students to present

appropriate medical or other documentation upon return to school for the purpose of validating that

clerk. Do not assume that an email sent to your child’s teacher will be forwarded to the front office.

Birthdays We love birthdays! We will recognize your child’s special day. Due to health concerns with student

food allergies, we ask that no food be sent to school for birthday celebrations. Parents are

encouraged to send in non-food treats or schedule a time to conduct a special activity with the class.

Under no circumstances will birthday celebrations be in the cafeteria. WE ASK THAT NO

PERSONAL PARTY INVITATIONS BE DELIVERED TO STUDENTS AT SCHOOL.

Conferences School-wide student-led conferences are scheduled twice during the academic year on October 18-

19 and again on March 9th. Students are dismissed at 11:50 am on conference days. Parents will be

notified of conference times in advance. Due to the additional time needed for student led

conferences, additional days may be utilized. Additionally, parents may request a conference with

their child’s teacher at any time during the school year.

Daily Folders This is where you will see notes from school, permission slips, school work, lunch menus, and PTO information. (We do not have many papers coming home.) The Daily Folder is also a great way for you to send notes to school. Students are responsible to check their folders every morning. We would also appreciate the cleaning out of the Daily Folder regularly.

Dismissal School ends at 2:20 PM on full school days and at 11:50 am on early dismissal days. Please send a

note if your child will be dismissed at a different time or is to go home a different way than his/her

normal routine.

Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a state funded program that is available to eligible kindergarten

through fifth grade students. This program focuses on supplementing instruction in skills necessary

for academic success. The EIP program emphasizes an activity-centered, small group curriculum

with extensive use of appropriate materials to assist in skill development. The EIP teacher plans with

the classroom teacher for 50 minutes of instruction each day.

ESOL services are offered to students for whom English is a second language. The focus of ESOL is

to provide learning to use English orally and to use written English to learn other skills.

Emergencies The school may need to contact you in case of an emergency. Please make sure we have the correct emergency numbers and information on file for your child.

Expectations Each student is a member of our classroom community. I will be encouraging students to relate with each other in positive ways and work together to achieve our classroom goals. Learning to be a responsible member of our classroom community means that students must:

Accept Responsibility Develop Listening Skills Follow Directions Display Appropriate Manners Accept Challenges Willingly Take Chances Contribute

We will be learning what these expectations mean in the beginning months of this school year, and continue to enforce and practice them as the year progresses.

Field Trips Our class will go on two field trips this year (to be determined). Permission slips must be signed and

returned for your child to attend.

Gifted Program

Gifted Program is an enrichment program that provides supplementary activities to enhance the

education of the gifted students. A student must meet school system guidelines in order to be eligible

for the enrichment program. Students who meet the state requirements for gifted program placement

are served through the Horizons program. Students must qualify in four areas: ability, achievement,

motivation, and creativity. Students may be referred for special testing by their teacher or a parent.

Students can be referred to the Gifted Program in one of three ways. A teacher may refer a child, a

child’s test scores may reveal a need for referral, or a parent may request that a child be referred.

Referral does not guarantee placement.

Grading and Reporting K-3 Students in grades Kindergarten through Third Grade will be evaluated using a standards-based report card based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence. Below are the keys that teachers use to evaluate student progress towards learning goals every nine weeks. Academic standards are outlined Parent Details documents that are send home each grade period. Academic achievement is evaluated using a standards-based scores outline below:

1 Performance is below standard, and student needs frequent teacher support, re- teaching, and additional practice.

Page 7: student’s absence to be considered excused. Attendance Fax ... · ESOL services are offered to students for whom English is a second language. The focus of ESOL is to provide learning

2 Performance is approaching standard, and student applies learned skills with some teacher support.

3 Performance meets standard, and student produces quality work with little to no teacher support. (grade level expectation)

4 Performance exceeds standard, and student consistently produces outstanding work independently.

A score of 3 indicates that a student has met the standard. Rather than receiving one grade per content area, you will receive a breakdown of your student’s performance by standard domain enabling you to identify areas of academic strength and opportunities for improvement more readily. We believe in holding our students to high standards, not only in academics, but also for their personal conduct. Recognizing that successful students take initiative and have good work habits, these skills will be assessed throughout the year using the following scale: E= Exemplary (Performance is beyond grade level expectation), S = Successful (Performance meets grade level expectation), and N = Needs Improvement (Performance need improvement). This information will be reported in the Work Habits section of the report card.

Homework Your child's homework will be to read for 15-20 minutes nightly. Students will have differentiated extra practice as needed in each subject area. Occasionally, there will be a special homework assignment or project. I will send home a note or post it on our BLOG. You can check our class website for these special homework assignments.

Important Papers Important notices will be sent home periodically. Please check your child's Daily Folder for important

papers every night.

Job Well Done Please encourage your child to exhibit good behavior and to always do his or her best.

Kindness We will learn to be kind to ourselves and others every day! This includes actions as well as words.

Lunch Students have the option to purchase a school lunch or bring a lunch from home. Lunch menus are

posted on our school website at the beginning of each quarter. Lunches that are dropped off regularly

will not be delivered to your child. You are responsible for making sure your child knows to pick their

lunch up on the way to the cafeteria. Lunches that are purchased from an outside vendor may not be

dropped off for your child. You must eat on our stage with your child if you choose to bring outside

food. Our lunch time is from 11:55-12:25.

Automated Meal Account: Each school has an automated system that is able to track the payment

and purchasing activity of each individual student’s account. Meals may be pre-paid for the week,

month, or even the year by cash, check, or by using the on-line payment system (see below for

details). Prepayment is encouraged because it eliminates the daily handling of money for the child,

and reduces the time the student must stand in line waiting, providing them more time to enjoy their

meal.

Students may purchase meals and extra foods sold through the School Nutrition Program

with funds debited from their meal account. If parents/guardians wish to limit the use of their

child’s account to meals only, each school year parents/guardians must send a written note to

the school’s cafeteria manager stating that their child will not be allowed to purchase extra

items off of their meal account.

Lost and Found

Found items of clothing and lunch boxes will be stored in a designated lost and found location. Items

such as keys, jewelry, etc. are given to the front office. Unclaimed items are donated to charity on a

quarterly basis. Everything brought to school should be labeled so that lost articles can be returned to

the owner.

Mastering Math Facts

Students are expected to memorize their addition and subtraction facts to 20.

Parties Board Policy allows elementary students to have two parties a year. We will have a Winter Holiday and End of the Year party. Some themes or unit of study may have a culminating activity to celebrate achievements. Due to health concerns with student food allergies, we ask that no food be sent to school for birthday celebrations. Parents are encouraged to send in non-food treats or schedule a time to conduct a special activity with the class. Under no circumstances will birthday celebrations be in the cafeteria. WE ASK THAT NO PERSONAL PARTY INVITATIONS BE DELIVERED TO STUDENTS AT SCHOOL.

Pictures Individual student pictures will be taken two times each year (fall and spring). The fall individual pictures will appear in the yearbook. Group pictures will be taken in the spring. All questions regarding pictures should be directed to the photographer. Practice: Just like any other thing you expect to be good at, the skills learned in school need to be practiced. Please provide time at home for your child to practice his or her math facts and reading.

Reading We will be doing a lot of reading in 2nd grade. Please allow time for your child to read to you. Students are expected to read for 15 to 20 minutes every night. Talk about the book with your child. Ask him or her about the character/s, the setting, the problem and how the story ended. Read books to your child that are more advanced than his or her reading level. Share your love for reading!

School Newsletter The Shiloh Point newsletter and the PTO newsletter are sent out electronically during the school year. The newsletter provides information about school functions and upcoming events. Classroom and individual notices and reminders will be sent home periodically. Please read these notices carefully for important information.

Shark Buddies: We meet with Mrs. Stevens’ fifth grade every Friday at the end of the day. It is the highlight of our week!

Snacks We will have healthy snack time daily at 9:00 am. Please do not send in sweets.

STEM The development of STEM proficient students begins in elementary schools. In elementary grades, students apply the rigor of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics content while engaged in learning activities that investigate the natural world.

Tardiness Students will be considered tardy if they arrive in the classroom after 8:30; however, morning work and routines will begin as the buses are unloaded at 8:10.

Transportation If there is a change in your child's regular transportation, please be sure to let me know through a hand written note so I can be sure to send him/her in the right direction.

Unique It is important to remember that all children are unique. Something that works for one child in our classroom might not work for another.

Visitors For the protection of our children all visitors must check in with the front office upon entering the school building. A valid driver’s license or government issued ID will be required each time you visit

Page 16: student’s absence to be considered excused. Attendance Fax ... · ESOL services are offered to students for whom English is a second language. The focus of ESOL is to provide learning

our school. All visitors must go through the Raptor Visitor Management system to enter the building. No exceptions will be made. During the weeks of GA Milestones testing, we ask that parents and visitors refrain from visiting their child. Please Note: Parents are requested to make an appointment with the teacher to visit or volunteer in our classrooms. Parents are not allowed into the classroom without scheduling the visit first. Unscheduled visits interrupt the instruction and supervision of the entire class

Volunteers I will try to provide many opportunities for parents to volunteer and visit our classroom. Your support can be shown in many ways. These include helping with parties, assisting with special projects, sending in treats for parties, chaperoning field trips, reading to the class, and working with students to improve their ability to recall math facts. We love to have volunteers in our classroom!

Writing The students will be participating in a daily writing workshop. We will need volunteers to help us publish their masterpieces.
