Teacher judgment is used when correcting, as the purpose of this is to give meaningful feedback for growth. If we do too much correction, children can be overwhelmed and not learn anything. When we give targeted feedback they have a better chance of remembering it. All student workbooks are required back at school on MONDAY 27th NOVEMBER so that our hardworking students can keep filling them with great work! We hope that families enjoy this opportunity to see a ‘snapshot’ of their students’ progress well before Assessment and Reporting is made public in mid-December. Note: This new routine will not apply to students in Foundation who will be bringing their “Learning Journey” home at the end of the school year, this is a wonderful collection of your child’s best work in their first year of school and a cause for real celebration. Something for Foundation families to look forward to in December! We would love to hear your feedback on this trial. ERIN NORMAN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Newsletter No. 37 - Term 4 – Week 7 23 November 2017

Student Workbooks coming home this Friday… a celebration of learning!

Following on from the feedback we received from the school community about Assessment

and Reporting in Term 2, this Semester we are trialling something a little different instead of

Portfolios.

This Friday 24th November students in Grades 1-6 will bring home their Maths workbook,

Reader’s Notebook and Writer’s Notebook. Over the weekend of the 24th-26th of November

we ask all families to make time to take a look through your student’s books, taking particular

note of the tasks that are labelled with Learning Intention and Success Criteria. These are

weekly examples of the work going on in classrooms, and by referring to the Success

Criteria; you and your child can discuss their progress and what next learning goals they

have set for themselves.

Correcting spelling⁉️ ✅ ❌

Your child’s writing skills are a work in progress. Children’s spelling abilities develop at

different rates. You will see many approximations and attempts in the books coming home

on Friday. We encourage risk taking and creativity!

Not all spelling errors will be corrected all of the time. Teacher judgment is used when

correcting, as the purpose of this is to give meaningful feedback for growth. If we do too

much correction, children can be overwhelmed and not learn anything. When we give

targeted feedback they have a better chance of remembering it.

All student workbooks are required back at school on MONDAY 27th NOVEMBER so

that our hardworking students can keep filling them with great work! We hope that families

enjoy this opportunity to see a ‘snapshot’ of their students’ progress well before Assessment

and Reporting is made public in mid-December.

Note: This new routine will not apply to students in Foundation who will be bringing their

“Learning Journey” home at the end of the school year, this is a wonderful collection of your

child’s best work in their first year of school and a cause for real celebration. Something for

Foundation families to look forward to in December!

We would love to hear your feedback on this trial.

ABC Maths Poem

By Claire – 5/6D

Annoying for some, easy for others.

Ballistic teachers are growing crazy.

Counting, waiting, for the answer.

Drawing groups, counting dots.

Ending, never! I have to restart.

Five, six, I give up!

Groaning and moaning in my head.

Hard work, I must admit.

It makes me start to throw a fit.

Joke questions, the tricks are killing me!

Key words underlined.

Long, tiring work.

Many things I don't get.

Never ending!

Oh my goodness, can I leave?

Poison for my mind.

Questions flood my brain.

Reading over and over.

Strategies I'm forced to do.

Telling them my working out.

Understanding all to know.

Voices in my mind telling me I'm wrong.

Working out is not my strength.

X-axis or Y? I have no idea!

Yelling in my mind.

Zero energy, but I'm done!

Shopping Time at Kalinda in Grades 1 & 2 Last week, the Grade 1 & 2 students were very busy setting up their shops and items they have worked hard to make and create for four weeks, and then sell to their peers. This included planning, designing and working with money. Each group was very enthusiastic on the day, even with the wet conditions and almost every shop sold out of all their goodies, while we all had fun calculating the change! Some of the shops made were flower shops, pets, footballs, sporting goods, bakeries, books, jewellery, lucky dips, pizzas, chess boards, ice creams and fashion. We all had a lovely time and have learnt heaps!

MULLUM MULLUM ENVIRONMENTAL WALK

Last Friday, Grade 3/4 students walked along the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail, as part of their CBL research. They learned how important this area was to the Wurundjeri people of the past, and how important it still is today. The Creek is the main watercourse from the Yarra Valley to the Yarra River, which then leads out to the sea. It is one of the only watercourses within the suburbs of Melbourne that is surrounded by native bushland for its whole length. That¹s 22 kilometres! The students learned about Œriparian¹ plants, and the native animals that use the Creek as a natural corridor. Not quite dodging a sudden downpour, the students were privy to seeing firsthand the drains in action, and how the rubbish really does make its way into the gutters, drains, stormwater, and eventually out to the Yarra River, instead of this being an abstract concept. They also witnessed the rapid rate the Creek rises after rain. It¹s not often that we don¹t ³duck for cover² and we got to experience the feeling of summer rain and the fresh, almost rainforest feel and aromas. After a quick lunch, it was back to school to research the answers in their Mullum Mullum Creek Field Study booklet, which is the segway into their Challenge: To create a learning station about an Australian environment, with the intention of teaching a younger grade. Hopefully many of our families will take advantage of the Creek Trail over the holidays - it really is a beautiful place on our very own doorstep. Lyse Carlson Grade 3/4 Teacher

Hi everyone,

My name is Lauren and I am the new program coordinator at Kalinda OSHClub. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Education at Monash University, specialising in generalist primary and specialist Health and Physical Education teaching. I have previously worked for Kelly Sports, where I planned and implemented games-based after-school sports sessions for primary school students. I have also worked in pharmacy, and currently provide tuition for primary and secondary school students in Mathematics and English. In my spare time, I enjoy running and walking my dog, Minty. I also enjoy hiking, and in 2018 hope to complete the Overland Track in Tasmania. I am a chocolate fiend; my friends and family call me the ‘Choccie Monster.’ I am looking forward to meeting you all and hope for an exciting end of 2017 together! LAUREN OSHCLUB COORDINATOR
