INTRODUCTION TO THE ONLINE CLASSROOM01

Introduction to the Online ClassroomAt Careers Australia we use the software application called “Blackboard Collaborate” to run our Online Classrooms. Blackboard is the Learning Management System that runs My.CA where you are able to access all your online learning units, lessons and assessments.

The Online Classroom is an important part of the online learning experience for both students and trainers. It brings the experience of a real classroom to the virtual space online. You are able to share your learning experience with classmates and your trainer is able to deliver the course in an exciting and engaging way.

You will be asked to participate in the Online Classroom both for general learning and for assessment. This guide has been developed to try to make your transition to Online Classroom user extraordinaire as smooth as possible.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ONLINE CLASSROOM

Before you join the Online Classroom: Software: (Mac users only) The first time that a .collab file is to be sent to you, there will be instructions for you to download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher so that you can join a Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing session. Follow these instructions and set up your computer.

Location: Where are you? A quiet room or shared office? How can you minimise distractions & potential interruptions around you (phone, colleagues etc)?

Equipment: You will need the computer or device you have been using to access Blackboard, a headset (headphones and microphone) - iPhone earplugs with a microphone work well. Don’t use built in microphones or speakers - this creates echoing and feedback, spoiling the session for others.

Arriving at the Online Classroom: Join the classroom: At least 10 minutes before your Online Classroom is scheduled to start, go to the Online Classroom link in Blackboard and click on Launch Room. If you are using Windows click Launch with JAVA, if you are using a Mac download the software and follow the instructions. The Launcher will download and you can verify the application. (Mac Users - The first time you may need a little longer to install the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.) When asked to run the application click Run. You are now in the room. For step by step instructions see other pages in this guide.

Connection Speed: Select the correct internet connection speed for your session, this affects the quality of the session.

Configure your headphones & microphone: Tools>Audio>Audio Set Up Wizard

Classroom etiquette: The Moderator will explain how to ask questions (chat/raise hand/talk) & who to contact if you have any technical problems during the session.

Troubleshooting: Microphone/Audio problems: Check the connections & go through the Audio Setup Wizard - Tools>Audio>Audio Set Up Wizard

Breakup in sound, video or whiteboard: Check that your connection speed is set correctly - Edit>Preferences>Session>Connection

TOP TIP

Test Blackboard CollaborateBlackboard Collaborate works on most machines, however, in some cases you may experience network firewall issues that restrict your ability to participate. Check your settings at Blackboard Support. Contact Careers Australia using the Contact link in the left hand navigation of your Online Learning Portal.
