Welcome from the MTNA South Central Division Director Ms. Sherry Frush

Welcome from the MTNA South Central Division Director Dear students, teachers, accompanists, judges and family members, Welcome to the 2018 MTNA South Central Division Competitions. Our MTNA South Central Competitions Chair and Site Coordinator, Dr. Roy Wylie, has worked diligently to provide you with the finest possible experience this weekend. I’d like to express my gratitude to Dr. Wylie and the other Coordinators Sharon Ard (Young Artist/Chamber Music), Sharon Callahan (Senior) and Gloria Johnson (Junior) and other volunteers for their efforts and tireless service. They will do all that is necessary to insure that this competition is run efficiently and is a success for all involved. Many thanks, also, to Francis Yang for hosting and to Northwestern State University of Louisiana for the use of their wonderful facilities. Congratulations, students and teachers, for your achievement in reaching this level of the competition. Best wishes to all of you and may your performances this weekend be at the highest level. The promotion of music study and excellence in performance are a primary focus of MTNA and it is our wish that competitions such as this provide you the opportunity for a positive and educational experience. It is a privilege to serve and represent the South Central Division and an honor to welcome each of you to this event. I hope that your stay in Natchitoches is a pleasant one and that you have safe travels returning home. Best wishes,

Sherry Frush, NCTM MTNA South Central Division Director

I am pleased to welcome you to Northwestern State University and the School of Creative and Performing Arts. We are glad you could join us and we are proud to showcase the stellar talents of our students and ensembles from the Mrs. H.D. Dear, Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts. The Music Department maintains a busy performance calendar throughout the Academic Year, and is home to more than 250 majors, nearly 40 full and part-time faculty, and over 50 student and faculty recitals and performances throughout each semester. I’d like to take a moment to highlight some of the recent successes in Music:

Our 315-piece Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band was invited to the St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Dublin, Ireland, and continues to entertain thousands at football games, and has been invited to be the exhibition band at high school contests throughout Louisiana and Texas.

The Spirit of Northwestern also hosts over 30 high school bands for the ‘Classic on the Cane’ Marching Contest each Fall, which attracts over 10,000 students and parents to Turpin Stadium, culminating in a performance by the SON.

Our students in Music have participated in masterclasses and workshops by world-famous ensembles and artists including The Boston Brass, and Chanticleer.

The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra recently celebrated a 50-year community collaboration with the NNSO Symphony Society, and looks forward to the next 50 years.

Our Chamber Choir-in addition to LMEA-was invited to perform for the LAACDA conference and the National Collegiate Choral Organization Convention.

Our Jazz Orchestra has taken home numerous awards from the Loyola Jazz Festival each year of participation.

As you can see, the Creative and Performing Arts are alive and well at NSU! If you wish to be added to our mailing list, please do not hesitate to contact us at: 318.357.4522, or [email protected] Best wishes on a successful conference, and we look forward to visiting with you. Let’s Celebrate the Arts! Greg A. Handel Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Director, School of Creative and Performing Arts Associate Professor of Music Education
