Year 11 - Miss Lake Year 11,

The time is drawing ever nearer when you will be sitting your GCSE exams! I hope the conversations you had last week at parents evening and the intervention sessions are beginning to sink in and you are buckling down to revision.

It has been fantastic to see so many of you working hard, attending intervention sessions and asking teachers to help you with topics you struggle with... But there is still a long way to go and not long to get there in.

I have spoken to some of your teachers who are concerned you haven’t quite realised just how close your exams are and how much work there is for you to do if you are going to get the grades you should be capable of getting. - Exams begin in May, so you only have months left. This may seem like a long time and you may feel like you have other things going on before then that you’d rather dedicate your time to... I have said this to you before but I think it bares repeating, these exams could shape the opportunities available to you in Sixth Form, college or apprenticeships which could influence the career you have for the rest of your life. Working hard for a couple of months is a small sacrifce to make compared to the rest of your life you will have to thank yourself or potentially regret your choices.

APA Community My week at APA

Mr Bagguley came to visit Ark Putney this week because he is considering becoming a teacher. We asked him about his experiences going back to school...

What were you frst impressions of the school?Erm... It’s big! It was quite overwhelming at frst getting used to a completely new environment, it took me out of my comfort zone. However, everyone has been really friendly and welcoming so I was put at ease. Tylar and Robin showed me around and we’re really helpful and open in answering all my questions. The building is fantastic and the views from the Art Department are stunning.

What do you feel you will take away from the experienceMy aim for the week was to experience the reality of being a teacher, and I defnitely think I’ve done that. I have often looked back at my own school experience and tried to imagine what it might be like from the other side of the fence, but only when you’re actually in a school can you fully understand it. The pastoral care I have witnessed this week has been excellent, you always picture teaching life being inside the classroom, but I wasn’t prepared for the amount of work teachers put in outside of lesson time. Finally, what is your favourite APA pillar?Hmmm, thats a tough one, but I think its got to be commitment. I’ve seen so much commitment this week from both staff and students. The experience has also made me more committed to starting the process of becoming a teacher. I think resilience and determination to see through a long term plan is something that we can all take away to our own lives.
