Call out the courage! Anxiety is the leading mental health issue facing young people. So, what can we do about it? Noticing, encouraging and celebrating courageous behaviour is a commonly used strategy to prevent and treat anxiety – and it works! Studies have shown that children and young people who are encouraged to face up to fears and congratulated when they do so, (even if it’s just a small thing!) are significantly less likely to experience anxiety and depression. So it’s a simple choice – call out the courage when you see it today! Liz Hindle, School Chaplain

Primary News Assistant Principal Louisa Frost (Assistant Principal) The term has once again got off to a flying start, with lots on offer for all the students to participate in. During Education week all the students from Year 3-8 participated in a Writer's Workshop. It was great to have parents drop in to see what this was all about. It was also pleasing to see a number of parents taking part in the learning journey in the Foundation to Year 2 classes. On Friday all the students enjoyed the challenges put forward in our STEM afternoon. The Egg Drop was certainly a highlight for all involved and was quite successful too, with only three not surviving the drop from the balcony. This week it has been great to see our relay teams practise enthusiastically for the PSSA athletics carnival. The students have also been training hard in sport and PE lessons for both today's carnival and next week’s Nyah Sports. It has been great to have a number of families involved in reading the books nominated for this year’s Children's Book Council of Australia awards. I have enjoyed discussing with the students at school and my own children at home what we enjoyed and disliked in each text. If you are participating in this please return the book the next day so that we can share them around quickly to all the families involved. If you have a student in Year 6 they should have brought home a note last week about an excursion the RSL is running to the Shine of Remembrance on the 4th of September. I was fortunate enough to attend this with some members of last year’s Year 6 class. It was a very informative and interesting day and I would encourage everyone to attend. I am looking forward to seeing all the inventive things the students will dress up as next week in our book week parade and maybe catching up with some of you too.

Year One/Two Emma Gentle (Class Teacher) In Year 1/2 this term we are looking at Fairy Tales in literacy. Students are enjoying learning about old Fairy Tales and discussing how they compare with new versions of the Tales. We began looking at character development and identifying character traits, which students enjoyed! We have learned about how to describe a setting and have now moved

onto looking at the structure of a narrative.

Secondary News Head Teacher Jean Duma (Head Teacher) 2020 Electives Subject selections for Stages 5 and 6 2020 have begun with students receiving the course booklets from Friday Week 2. Course markets were held for Stage 5 2020 this Monday and Stage 6 2020 on Wednesday. Students in Stage 6 2020 will have individual course counselling meetings Thursday Week 5 with Miss Duma and Mrs Morton. All subject selections must be completed by Monday 26 August 2019. G'DAY USA 2021 Students in Years 7-10 attended a presentation from EWT staff about G'DAY USA for which Tooleybuc will next be involved in January 2021. Interested students took home flyers with some information for discussion with parents. Any students who are keen to participate need to return the expression of interest form to Miss Duma by no later than Tuesday 20 August. If there is enough interest, we will then hold

a parent and student information session.

Mathematics Darren Rose (Mathematics Teacher) Year 12 Standard Mathematics students are finalising a few topics for their course and currently have a take home assignment investigating home loans. Soon we will begin revising and preparing for their final examinations and for some the HSC examinations which require our senior students to maintain a focus on their learning to achieve their best results. Years 7-10 are as always, busy in Mathematics classes with many topics to complete and beginning this term students will be given topic tests to answer at home and returned to school for marking. These tests will be valuable assessment of student learning but will not count towards official school assessment ranks for awards at Assemblies. They should be treated seriously and completed under testing conditions where students are unassisted with help answering questions. Students should not feel stressed and overly pressured as the purpose of topic tests is to identify current skills and areas for future learning rather than focussing on scores. By completing them at home, class learning time for new material should increase. The Year 11 Standard 2 Mathematics class are nearly finished all their course work with only two and a half chapters to go. They should now be starting to prepare for their end of course exams.

VTAC course applications for 2020

are opening on Monday, so if you

are in Year 12 and intending to

study at a Victorian University,

TAFE or independent tertiary college next year, it’s

time to ensure that you have started your VTAC

application preparation.

All applications are made on the Victorian Tertiary

Admissions Centre (VTAC) website

(www.vtac.edu.au) as VTAC receives, collates and

forwards all student applications to institutions

including special consideration (SEAS) requests,

scholarship applications and any other relevant or

required documentation.

Here are some tips to get started:

Research!

Research the courses on offer in your chosen

field and preferred institution(s).

Use ‘CourseSearch’ on the VTAC website and

VTAC App (see quick link) as the primary source

of course information.

Refine your list!

Establish your course preferences (you will do this after visiting open days too) and ensure you are aware of the selection criteria for each course that you wish to apply for, as each course and institution’s entry requirements do vary i.e. interview, admission tests, audition, folio presentation, or extra form/documents that need to be completed. Note: This information can be found on each college website. Important: Take note of all relevant dates and deadlines.

Register! Create a VTAC user account and have all your details close at hand i.e. educational history, student numbers to ensure that you complete your application accurately.

Place your eight courses in your order of

preference. You won’t be able to save a draft of

your application, but you will be able to change

your preferences after it is completed.

Remember: It is important to list your ‘dream

course’ at the top of your preference list, as

adjustment factors can affect your overall score

and you will always be offered a place in the

highest course in your list for which you meet the

requirements.

Important to note: You have until 30th of

September for a ‘timely’ application where the

normal application fee is $36.00, after this date

the fee increases to $113.00.

Handy tip –

The ‘How to apply’ page on the VTAC website is

very helpful and may answer any questions you

may have. You will also find some very useful

YouTube VTAC video links about applying for

courses, SEAS, scholarships, the offer process

and changing preferences.

Career Focus – (Medicine) Surgeon There are many areas of Medicine that you can undertake your training and work in, for example; Paramedicine, Pathology, Medical Practitioner, Ophthalmology, Pediatrician, Anesthetist and the list goes on! Training usually starts with an undergraduate degree in Medicine or Biomedicine and then post graduate study follows in a specialist area. One specialist area in medicine is to become a Surgeon. Surgeons treat diseases, injuries and deformities by using a range of different methods and instruments, and may specialise in a particular field, such as cardiovascular or plastic surgery. Surgeons:

Operate on patients to repair injuries, fix deformities, treat disease and improve function.

Examine patients to determine medical state and surgical risk.

Prescribe pre-operative and post-operative treatments to patients including sedatives and antibiotics.

Analyse patient medical history, allergies and examination results to decide the best courses of action.

Refer patients to other medical specialists and exchange relevant medical details.

Surgeons can work in private practice alone or with fellow medical practitioners, in a group practice, in community health centres or at a (public or private) hospital. They work in cities, suburbs and rural towns. There are a number of specialisations of surgery:

Brain Surgeon

Cardiovascular Surgeon

Orthopedic Surgeon

Plastic Surgeon The important personal requirements to be a surgeon are:

Good communication skills

Ability to exercise high ethical standards

Compassionate towards others

High level of motivation and self-discipline

Excellent hand-eye coordination To gain entry into undergraduate courses in medicine, you usually need to gain your VCE with particularly good results. Prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge in one or more of English, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics are normally required. Some universities offer medicine as a double degree and may have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements. Training also involves experience in approved hospitals and the passing of examinations leading to membership of the appropriate professional college. Specialist training programs and examinations are administered by the colleges. Entry into these courses is highly competitive and based on a combination of academic achievement, performance on the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) and a structured interview. The UCAT is a two-hour computer-based test which assesses a range of mental abilities identified by universities as important to practicing in the fields of medicine, dentistry and clinical sciences. Entry into the graduate-entry courses is based on prior completion of a bachelor degree, performance in the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) and a score resulting in a semi-structured interview. Studies in behavioral, social, biological and physical sciences and humanities are likely to enhance performance in the test, and are offered at most universities. Following course completion, graduates must undertake one year of full-time employment (internship) at a recognised teaching hospital to be able to gain full registration as a surgeon with the Medical Board of Australia. Prior to commencing clinical placements, students will be required to undergo a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check and provide evidence of immunisations. It is a legal requirement that graduates to be registered with the Medical Board of Australia before practicing in any state or territory in Australia. MOTORCROSS FUNDRAISING WANTED FLAGGIES

Hi everyone welcome back to the 2019 school year. As next year is the major excursion year, this year will become the major year for fundraising. Any money made will help reduce the costs of the camps making it affordable for all families.

Over the last couple of years we have been flagging at Balaranld Motor cross, this has become a major fundraising opportunity with $500.00 being made each time we flag! So I am asking for volunteers. We need 8 volunteers for each day we flag. Those students who are 16 are welcome to help too. Please see below a list of dates:

Rd 5 Sun 11th August Rd 6 22nd September

Any enquires on what is involved please contact Cindy Funnell on 0429201397. If available to help please contact Mereeka Andrews on 0428292906

Thank you 😊
