§ Parents may choose to apply to any Magnet school Exception: Students applying for Gifted or Highly Gifted schools must be identified by district (or verified by current school – Gifted schools only).

§ All students including English Learners, Special Education, and Gifted/Talented are encouraged to apply.

§ Selection based on Magnet goal and priority points, not on a first-come first-served basis.

Required Criteria for Highly Gifted Magnet programs

For the Highly Gifted Centers:• Priority will be given to Highly Gifted (HG)

students (scoring* 99.9%) • Students scoring* at 99.5% (HGA) are also

considered based on seat availability.

*Scores received on an Intellectual Ability assessment administrated by an LA Unified designated GATE psychologist.

Magnet TRANSPORTATION

Provided to eligible students at predetermined stops:§Elementary§Must reside outside a 2 mile radius or outside the school attendance boundary whichever is further.

§Secondary§Must reside outside a 5 mile radius or outside the school attendance boundary whichever is further unless they attend a multi-level Magnet Schools (Arroyo Seco Museum Science, Sherman Oaks CES, Valley Alternative and Westside)

PRIORITY POINTS OVERVIEW

§The priority points system is based on a Court-Order to reduce the harms of racial isolation

§A fair and secure computer process automatically assigns priority points to each applicant

§No priority points are given for submitting an application to a program for which applicant is ineligible

§A change of address must be made at your child’s LAUSD school of attendance before the application deadline.

PRIORITY POINTS

A. Matriculation (12 Points))

§Applicants who have completed the highest grade level in a Magnet program and apply to continue in another Magnet program at the next level receive 12 matriculation points at time of matriculation only.

§ Students currently enrolled in multi-level Magnet schools do not receive matriculation points (Eagle Rock HS Gifted, Franklin DLA, LAUSD/USC Media Arts/Engineering, Los Angeles CES, Maywood CES, Science Academy, Sherman Oaks CES, Sotomayor, Sun Valley Biomedical Sciences/Engineering/Leadership, and Lake Balboa).

§K-8 schools receive matriculation points only at the eighth grade (Arroyo Seco Museum Science, Western Ave and Westside Global Awareness Magnets).

B. Waiting List (4-12 Points)

§Waiting List points are granted to applicants on a valid Waiting List and not already enrolled in a Magnet program.

§Student will receive 4 points per year for up to three consecutive years (starting with most current year).

§Applications must be received by the deadline to earn waiting list points. If an applicant on a waiting list declines Magnet placement, all waiting list points are removed.

§Applicants whose resident LAUSD school is designated as PHBAO by the District, receive 4 points.

§PHBOA Points are not cumulative; they areassigned yearly.

E. Sibling (3 Points)§If an applicant is applying to the same Magnet school/center in which a brother or sister will be continuing, he/she receives 3 points.

§Points are assigned if the sibling is attending the applicant’s 1st choice school.

§Siblings must reside at the same address at the time of application, which must be reflected in the computer system at the student’s current LAUSD school of attendance.

§It is the parent’s responsibility to verify that the siblings have the same address on file in the computer system at the current LAUSD school of attendance by the application deadline. No P.O. boxes are accepted.

SELECTION EXAMPLE

Students are assigned a random priority number. Based on the priority number, students are selected in priority number order.

How were the 5 students selected if all 15 students had 12 points?

100 students applied for 6th

grade at XYZ school that had 65 openings. The following is a breakdown of the number of students and priority points.

THREE CHOICE PROCESSFirst Choice• If selected, system will place student on school active

list, 2nd and 3rd choices will not be processed and no points are accumulated for 2nd and 3rd choices.

• If NOT selected, system will proceed to second choice

Second Choice• If selected, system will place student on school active list

for second choice school, first and third choice schools will not be processed and no points are accumulated for 1st and 3rd choices.

• If NOT selected, system will look at third choice

Third Choice• If selected, system will place student on school active list

for 3rd choice, no points will be accumulated for 1st and 2nd choice schools.

• If NOT selected, the student will be placed on waiting list for First Choice school ONLY based on their Magnet priority points.

THREE CHOICE PROCESS

§Parents may select up to three magnet schools. Selecting one magnet only or two magnets only is acceptable.

§If student is not selected to any of the three choices, the student will be placed on the 1st choice waiting list only.

§Parents do not receive letters for all of the choices selected, just for the school selected or wait listed.

§Parents are responsible for appropriate school selection.

§Parents may rescind the application in writing.

Q: Is the Magnet Program only for Gifted students?A: The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Magnet Program is a Court-ordered voluntary integration program that is open to all students, grades K-12, who live within the boundaries of the LAUSD. Some of the Magnet schools/centers are for gifted/high-ability students. See the information on the eChoices website or brochure.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSQ: Do I have to apply for my child every year?

A: If your child is on the waiting list, an application must be submitted the following year. Once your child is enrolled in a Magnet, you only need to apply if you wish for him/her to change schools or to move to the next school level (i.e. 5th to 6th or 8th to 9th).
