ENROLMENT WEEK
This week indicates the start of the academic year, giving you the chance to sign-up to modules and
societies that will build upon your Swansea University experience. There will also be a variety of
events for you to network with both businesses and students alike.

Park Campus Careers Fair: 9th October - In addition to the Bay Campus Careers Fair a second fair will be held at Park Campus.
Employers will network with students, promoting available job opportunities at their stands and at presentations.

The Student Information Office have arranged a range of activities for you during Welcome Week,
including beach sports and a BBQ at 360 Beach and Watersports, as well as a picnic and games
(weather dependent). Look out for the full timetable of events from the SEO team.
THE BAY CAMPUS CAREERS FAIR
The School of Management is teaming up with the College of Engineering to host the first Careers
Fair at the Bay Campus. You will have the chance to meet and network with employers from a
variety of established businesses and learn more about work placement opportunities.
PLACEMENT AWARDS
The Student Mobility team are celebrating a successful pilot year of placements, hosting an award
ceremony with our placement students and providers. We will be celebrating the level of
engagement, commitment and support - awarding both a student and a participating business.

BUSINESS IN THE BAY
Business in the Bay is be an inter-University competition about employability skills, allowing
multi-disciplinary teams of 5 students from Universities across the UK to go head-to-head in
employability challenges, testing their knowledge and aptitudes in areas including leadership,
communication skills, and teamwork.

The Student Information Office within the School of Management offers a range of student facing and professional services, it
is divided into 3 main sections: Student Services, Student Experience and Student Mobility.
STUDENT SERVICES
PROGRAMME ADMINISTRATION
The Programme Administration team manage and administer SoM academic programmes, compulsory and optional modules
for undergraduates, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students. If you are interested in transferring courses, or
have a query about your timetable, attendance, modules or have any general questions about your studies, email the team on
ASSESSMENT
The Assessment team assists students and staff with assessment coordination; this includes processing extenuating
circumstances, set up of Turnitin submissions, process examinations and coursework assessments including coordinating
assessment moderation and external examiners. The team also assists students with their exam timetables and specialist
provision for students with a disability or learning difficulties. You can contact the team on [email protected].
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
The Student Experience Officers (SEO) are available to provide support and guidance to SoM students. Any student
experiencing difficulties with their studies or personal lives who doesn't know what to do, their door is always open. Their role
is to listen to your concerns, to help you navigate the School’s and University’s systems to find information, or to liaise with
personal tutors, other university staff or external bodies. For more information, email [email protected].
STUDENT MOBILITY
CAREERS SERVICE
The School of Management offers all its students the opportunity to engage with its very own in-house Careers service,
supporting you throughout your student journey, preparing you for the graduate job market. The team offers CV advice and
workshops, mock interviews, an employability module, and runs several exciting events, workshops and seminars throughout
the academic year that give you the opportunity to engage and network with industry representatives, enhancing your

PLACEMENTS, PROJECTS AND STUDY ABROAD TEAM
The placements team oversees the administration of the School’s work placement schemes, from sourcing and advertising
placements through to the assessment stage. As part of the 2x6 month placement scheme the team also coordinates the study
abroad programme, in which students can study a semester at one of our international exchange partners. In addition, the
team organises the final year project scheme as part of the BSc Business Management UG programme. For more information

SOPHIE DARE-EDWARDS - HEAD OF PLACEMENTS & STUDY ABROAD
I began working for the School of Management as an International Recruitment and Marketing
Officer, soon after starting the post I was asked if I would like to lead the Placements team – which
sounded like an exciting opportunity! I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team throughout
our successful pilot year and we all look forward to offering further work experience programmes
in the upcoming academic years. It is a wonderful profession to be in as we get to experience
working with our students as well as engaging with industry. I look forward to working with the
next cohort of students in pursuing that all-important work experience!
DAVE WILDE - STUDENT EXPERIENCE OFFICER
I moved to Swansea with my family in 2014 to take up the Student Experience Officer post at the
University. Previously, I managed a team of tutors for the Workers Educational Association. I am a
qualified lecturer in FE and I have also worked as a personal tutor in FE and a student adviser in HE.
Therefore I have a lot of experience of supporting students with personal and academic issues and
in helping to find other sources of support. I have a strong interest in counselling and I am looking
to develop my existing skills by studying an MA in Counselling Practice.
JESS LOOMBA - CAREERS OFFICER
I am the newest member of the School of Management Careers team, I have been working in the
School of Management since December 2015 when I upped and left the green hills of Shropshire
for the beautiful sea views of Swansea. I took up the role of Careers Officer due to the fact I really
enjoy helping and advising students in relation to their future options. Coming from a role where I
informed school students about their options after GCSE’s this seemed like the perfect
opportunity! I work in a great team of four other careers advisors where we aim to provide School
of Management students with a variety of opportunities to develop their employability.
LAURA MALE - ACTING ASSESSMENT AND PROGRAMMES OFFICER
I moved to Swansea as a student in the Psychology Department of Swansea University fourteen
years ago, and I’ve been here ever since! I’ve worked in the School of Management for more than
eight years, and I’ve gathered a wealth of knowledge and experience in that time. I’ve supported
students from application to graduation, and I’m always ready to tackle a new challenge. I’m
currently filling the role of Assessment and Programmes Officer, acting as a link between the two
sides of the Student Services team. I really enjoy working with students – there’s never a dull
moment!

LUKE WHITMORE
BSC BUSINESS MANAGEMENT WITH 12 MONTH WORK PLACEMENT
Following the completion of my work placement I would like to utilise my experiences and
insight, as well as my role as subject representative to help other students effectively
engage with the School of Management's industry partners, so they may make the most of
their final year projects.
I would hope that the advice and support I could offer to my peers would have a positive
impact on their experiences during year 3 of their studies, whilst also providing some
benefit to the School and their industry partners too.
ROWAN MCDONALD
BSC ECONOMICS AND FINANCE
I have just finished my first year studying Economics and Finance and I am the level 2
Economics and College rep for the SoM this year. During this time my priorities will be
focussed around the new Bay Campus and ensuring a smooth transition from the old to the
new, especially for students who will still be living in and around the current Singleton
Campus.
Furthermore I want to continue to improve the links between students and staff through
the student rep system, so we can all experience the best from our time at Swansea Uni-
versity. Hope to see you on Campus in September!

Welcome to the Science and Innovation Bay Campus - the new home of the School of Management and College of Engineering.
Students and staff will be accommodated in a £23million facility and will benefit from the applied research, innovation and
employment opportunities offered by this exceptional working environment. Planning is currently underway for a further
£40million investment and extension to the School of Management.
In addition to the two colleges, there will also be a Tower Information Centre, which will be home to central support services for
students, a state-of-the-art library and resource centre, the Students’ Union, an impressive Great Hall which will house an
auditorium for 700, lecture theatres and a café offering magnificent views across the Swansea Bay towards Mumbles and Baglan
Bay.
There will also be a full range of support, recreational, social, sporting and catering facilities on the campus, including:

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
CAN WE PARK OUR CARS ON CAMPUS?
There is a park and ride available at Fabian Way for £4 per car per day, but students aren’t able to park on campus between the
hours of 8am and 6pm. Both campuses will be accessible by bus, extra routes have been added to service the needs of the Bay
campus and student living areas.
IS THERE A BAR ON THIS CAMPUS, LIKE JCS?
The Great Hall has a terrace bar, with provision for music concerts. A boutique café-bar in the residential street (opposite the
School of Management on the map) will provide a relaxed environment for drinks and light food.
CAN I ACCESS THE BEACH FROM THE BAY CAMPUS?
Yes, near the School of Management there is a path to access the beach. Programmes of beach sports such as rugby, beach
soccer, volleyball and beach tennis should be commencing in September in addition to instructor-led Watersports programmes
with SUPs and kayaking.
WILL THERE BE A CINEMA ON THIS CAMPUS?
No there will be no cinema at the Bay Campus, the nearest cinema is Odeon Cinema or Vue Cinema approximately 2 miles away
in Swansea Town Centre. Alternatively there are regular screenings available at the Taliesin centre on the Park Campus, one of
the largest screens in Swansea, seating 300 people.
WHEN WILL THE SPORTS FACILITIES BE AVAILABLE?
A confirmed date for the completion of the sports facilities has not yet been provided, however the Uni gym membership covers
access to facilities across both campuses.
IS THERE GOING TO BE A SWIMMING POOL HERE TOO?
No unfortunately not, however the National Pool in the Sports Village by Singleton Campus is available in addition to the LC2
building in the town centre next to the Waterfront Museum.
I’VE HEARD SOMETHING ABOUT A TIDAL LAGOON?
Plans are yet to be confirmed, however we are very excited that Swansea Bay may be the home of the world’s first man-made
tidal lagoon.
I NEED TO REGISTER WITH THE DOCTOR AND DENTIST, IS THERE ONE ON THIS CAMPUS?
There isn’t a doctor or dental surgery at the Bay Campus, however there is at the Park Campus. There are also doctor and dentists

Some of you may have travelled 10 minutes to get to the University; others may have travelled 10,000 miles – regardless of your
journey, we’re glad that you have chosen to study at the School of Management in Swansea University.
Some of our recent graduates have spoken to us about their experiences of Welcome Week and provided us with some information
that we would like to share with you.
Welcome week is often seen just as fun! But using your Welcome Week effectively means that not only will you enjoy
yourself and have a good time, it also means that you will be prepared and ready to manage your studies. During Welcome
Week you will be given lots of information and contacts that will help you throughout your time at Swansea.
Attend your ‘Meet your Classmate’s events.’ We know that your housemates are a lot of fun, but your classmates are the
ones who will be working alongside you throughout your degree and will often be the ones sitting up all night revising and
working on group projects with you. Give your classmates a chance to get to know you and you’ll be amazed by how many
become friends for life!
For those of you who don’t know – you have a student email account. It’s your student number, followed by
@swansea.ac.uk (for example, [email protected]). You will receive a lot of emails as a student and you need to read
them all, emails are our number one method of contacting students, so we don’t want to you miss any key information!

WELCOME WEEK
Money Management – this may be the first time that you are managing your finances – this can be both liberating and
scary in equal measures! You may be waiting for a large payment to be deposited in your bank account, so make sure that
you attend the Money Management session in your Welcome Week – as this will help you to learn how to make your money
last for the whole year and avoid Pot Noodle dinners when your money has run out!
Each cohort of students has a nominated Student Representative, who provides a voice for the student population within
the School of Management (see the “Meet the Team” pages to meet some of your reps). If you are interested in becoming
a Student Representative for your year group, please email [email protected], this is a great chance to start
building your CV! Alternatively, make sure that you are aware of who your Student Representative is and how you can
contact them. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about your course or your student experience, your Student
Representative can help.
The Business Society is an important part of your time at the School of Management – the society brings together students
to enjoy social events, student led events, networking and much more. The Business Society will be at many of the fresher
events, or alternatively you can join by emailing the society [email protected].

The new “MyUniHub” will provide a central information service for students at Swansea University. How you access
information will change from September, with the hubs bringing together frontline information services in to one location and
one friendly service. These services include:
ACADEMIC SERVICES:
Responsible for the areas of academic administration for taught programmes and postgraduate research, academic
records and systems, student finance, collaborative provision, discipline, examinations, graduation, regulations and
quality as well as being home to the University’s Welsh Translation Unit.
STUDENT RECORDS:
Responsible for student administration, finance and fees, advising students and staff concerning administrative issues,
managing programme and module database records.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISORY SERVICE (ISAS):
Providing information and advice on non-academic matters, including immigration advice and services to all
international (non-UK) students and their dependents.
MONEY ADVICE AND SUPPORT OFFICE (MASO):
Providing advice and guidance on all student money related issues. For many students University is the first time they
will have managed their own finances, so the Money Doctors are on hand to ensure students achieve their maximum
potential whilst studying and will contribute to a positive student experience.
INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICE (IDO):
Provide additional support for incoming and outgoing exchange students, promoting and supporting global
opportunities such as short internships or longer work experiences. Scholarships and bursaries to support students
planning to study or work abroad are also available through the IDO .
FINANCE (CASH OFFICE):
Responsible for providing information on everything you need to know about your tuition fees, managing the
University’s Credit Control Function. This includes the management of the collection of both UG and PG tuition fees and
also commercial income.
The Bay Campus Hub is situated in the Clock Tower, forming part of the Tower Information Centre and the Park Campus Hub is
situated in the Abbey Stable Block.

Our Week of Work offers flexible 5 day unpaid placements
during the last week of January and during the summer
holiday period.
Students can participate from all disciplines and
levels.
Students’ employability skills are boosted through a
master class to ensure that expectations of
employers are met .
Students are assessed on their abilities and interests
via an interview to make sure they will be a good fit
for the roles offered.
Students are able to claim back reasonable expenses
from the University.
4 week paid internships for undergraduates taking place
throughout the summer holiday period or on a part-time
basis during term.
Flexible 4 week placements.
Students are paid minimum wage.
Employer pays two weeks of the salary and the
University match-funds.
All placements are graduate level, allowing you to get
the very best out of your internship.
Students are up-skilled through an Employability
Master Class and assessed on abilities and interests
to ensure suitability for each role.
Simple application process and named Account
Manager at the University for each place.
Santander Paid Internship Programme provides 3-month paid internships within SMEs. The programme is for final-year
undergraduates and graduates of any discipline.
Internships last a minimum of 3 months and are open to UK based small-medium sized enterprises.
Students are paid at least £3000.
SME pays £1500 and Santander match-funds.
Many placements lead to full time roles, however there is no guarantee of this.
Students are provided with a free Employability Master Class and interview, to help ensure that you are suitable and
ready for your placement.

A SWANSEA START UP
STORY
Winner of Swansea Start Up weekend 2013:
Where did the idea come from?
From thinking that there had to be a better way! How many times have you been dropping your child off at school to find they are the only one in school uniform? The solution was a small, easy to use app that could transform the communication between teachers and parents. Our idea is that increased communication between school and home can only be good for the overall education of the child. And with that thought "In My School" was born.
How did it start?
Whilst the idea had been floating around in Mike's mind for a while, it only started to take real shape when we all met at Swansea's first Start-Up Weekend. Whilst we hadn't met before, we all gelled around the idea. (This may have something to do with our mutual love of pizza!) We ended up winning the event, a fact that we don't think was luck, but based on a good idea and an effective team.

ENTERPRISE DAY
Enterprise Day - Reaching Wider Partnership
Students from the SoM were asked to volunteer to help year 10 pupils from the Dylan Thomas Community school to design a snack or drink product for the Rugby World cup this then formed part of the pupils coursework.
The event was run by the Reaching Wider Partnership team and took place on Friday May 15th and run again on Friday May 22nd.
During the event School teams took part each one coming up with an original idea ranging from fruity drinks, and smoothies to milkshakes. SoM students were on hand to help the pupils come up with innovative ideas and in some cases brilliant brand names (‘Groovy Smoothies’ was a particular favourite of mine). SoM students also used the opportunity to gain important employability skills to put on their CVs – teamwork, leadership and creativity. Glyn Williams a Masters Student took the role of finance director, even dressing the part.
The pupils went on to present their products to the judging panel which was a nerve wracking experience for all, including panel. After much deliberation the winner was Team 3, who created a drink aimed at children called Dragon Juice.

VFX Financial PLC, PMP Recruitment and Vocal Eyes have all
visited the School of Management towards the end of the
14/15 academic year to conduct student interviews for their
bespoke placement schemes. The Careers service have been
busy ensuring students are ready for their interviews by

appointments to go through interview techniques.

1. Always remember to tailor your CV to the job you are
applying for.
2. Try and keep a note of any interesting tasks you may
have done in your work and personal life, so you can
update your CV as you go along.
3. Develop ambition, don’t just accept your lot. Strive
for better things!
4. Learn to endure tasks and stick things out.
5. Make the most of your skills.
6. Be confident in who you are and play to your
strengths.

“the sort of personality that can open doors with certain
types of people, as key to her own success in business.

BLOG - ALUMNI EVENT

I am a member of the School of Management Careers service
and hosted a School of Management Alumni Event on Thursday
7th May. I really enjoyed organising the event and hope to make
it an annual event that will continue to grow.
The event took place in The Waterfront Museum in Swansea
Marina. I chose the venue as I wanted the evening to have a nice
atmosphere, and with the views surrounding the museum it
worked really well. Invitees included current third year and post
graduate students and School of Management students that
have graduated over the past five years.
The event was an excellent networking opportunity for our
current students and a good chance to find out what SoM
alumni have gone on to achieve after graduating from Swansea
University.
The evening consisted of prosecco, canapés, fish and chips and
some excellent talks from two School of Management alumni.
After the Dean opened the event Chris Richards, a SoM alum
spoke about moving from Swansea University to his current role
as an Associate at PwC. Isobel Evans then took to the stage to
talk about her experiences and how she had progressed to her
role as Marketing Manager at a local SME (S&C Electric Europe
LTD). Isobel Evans stated:

“Don’t be disheartened if you have a few rejections, I

Both talks were very inspiring and succeeded in enthusing
current SoM students in aiming to reach their goals after
graduating.

difference to the quality of your degree.
6 month placement, as part of the 2x 6 month placement

A work placement is a type of learning that is specifically designed for students to enhance their employability. The placement
schemes are embedded within the undergraduate programmes at the School of Management and are created to equip students with
new skills and experiences of real world work environments.

The recruitment period begins around October and ends in January, however some larger organisations with established internship

Business Management and Accounting and Finance students that choose
to study a four year degree with two six-month placements have the
opportunity to study at a partner institution for their first 6-month
placement (1 full semester).
Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to experience new cultures and
to become truly independent, however there are many career enhancing
benefits of studying abroad, including: preparing you for working on an
international scale, prospects of developing new language skills, an
opportunity to study in a location which is known as a leading global hub
in your field of interest and many more!
You will need to achieve a minimum grade of 50% to be eligible to study
abroad and in the event of oversubscription allocations will be made on a
performance basis.

My name is Jonathan Bradfield and I have just returned from a year spent studying International Business Management at York University in Toronto, Canada.
During my time at York I lived on campus, which was very convenient as during some months temperatures could drop to -25 degrees Celsius, making getting about pretty difficult.
The reason I decided to choose to do a year abroad was due to a number of different factors. The first one being I wanted to have the opportunity to travel, something I certainly managed during my time there.
I was fortunate enough to visit Niagara Falls, Montreal, New York and also to go skiing all of which were great experiences, making memories I will never forget. This was made all the more enjoyable by the friends I made along the way and also my housemate from the first two years at Swansea, Rhodri, who also came to Toronto to study with me.
One of my favourite moments would have to be the trip to Montreal. Myself and Rhodri visited there for the weekend along with around 14 of our friends from university…

ABOUT THE AWARD
The Swansea International Award has been set up to help you recognise, articulate and formalise the international skills you
develop through taking part in international-related activity during your time at Swansea University. Students take part in
many activities during the time spent at here, which can offer valuable skills for international employment.
There was previously no formal way of recognising students’ international-related achievements, meaning students are usually
unable to present anything tangible to employers. It is also not easy to recognise skills as they develop because the experience
in itself is not considered to be an opportunity for development in the first instance. For example, a summer programme in
India seems like an exciting experience, but the opportunities to develop personal and professional skills are plentiful and are
sometimes overlooked.
The completion of the award means you will have an example CV demonstrating your international skills, certification of
completing the award, and the award will be listed on the your Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR). The award is
open to all students but the experiences will differ depending on the student, e.g. international students will be referring to
their experiences here, whilst a home student may refer to their experience overseas.

Your Responsibilities:
The process of achieving the award, such as planning, completing the tasks and producing the portfolio needs to be managed
by yourselves. All of the resources and information on how to do this will be provided by the University via Blackboard and in
the handbook below. It is up to you to initiate the international experience, take part in the activities on campus and write
timely reflections for the portfolio.
