NON-HARASSMENT POLICY The Piedmont Unified School District believes that all students have a right to a safe and healthy school environment. The district, schools, and community have an obligation to promote mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance. The Piedmont Unified School District is committed to creating and maintaining a community free of harassment. All students are entitled to an atmosphere at school that is free of harassment, including sexual harassment and sexual violence. Students who are being harassed and who feel unable through their own efforts to end the harassment should bring it to the attention of a counselor, teacher, administrator, or other school adult in whom they have confidence. It is a PUSD policy that school authorities will take appropriate action, including a full investigation and application of school discipline if necessary. All reported incidents will be taken seriously.

NON-BULLYING POLICY The Piedmont School District believes that all students have a right to a safe and healthy school environment. The district, schools, and community have an obligation to promote mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance. The Piedmont School District will not tolerate behavior that infringes on the safety of any student. A student shall not intimidate, harass, or bully another student through words or actions. Such behavior includes: direct physical contact, such as hitting or shoving; verbal assaults, such as teasing or name-calling; and social isolation or manipulation. The Piedmont School District expects students and/or staff to immediately report incidents of bullying to the principal or designee. Staff who witness such acts must take immediate steps to intervene when safe to do so. Each complaint of bullying should be promptly investigated. This policy applies to students on school grounds, while traveling to and from school or a school-sponsored activity, during the lunch period, whether on or off campus, and during a school-sponsored activity.

NOTICE OF NON-DISCRIMINATION Piedmont Unified School District programs, activities, and practices shall be free from discrimination based on actual or perceived race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or gender expression; or on the basis of a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics. The following persons have been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies: Adam Littlefield Principal Piedmont High School 800 Magnolia Avenue Piedmont, CA 94611 (510) 594-2630 Shannon Fierro Principal Millennium High School 760 Magnolia Avenue Piedmont, CA 94611 (510) 594-2878 Randall Booker Superintendent Piedmont Unified School District 760 Magnolia Avenue Piedmont, CA 94611 (510) 594-2614 Cheryl Wozniak Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Piedmont Unified School District 760 Magnolia Avenue Piedmont, CA 94611 (510) 594-2687 For further information on the notice of non-discrimination, call the Office of Civil Rights Hotline at (800) 421-3481.

Student and Parent Handbook 2018-19 General Information Block Schedule & Tutorial Periods We will continue with the modified block schedule, which optimizes instructional time and addresses district and school goals to reduce student stress. Each class meets 3 times per week and there is a tutorial period every Tuesday morning from 8 AM to 9 AM. Although it is primarily voluntary, students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the tutorial period. Parents and students should also be aware that teachers may require attendance at a tutorial period if they feel it is vital to a student's success or if they wish to schedule a make-up test at that time. Counseling and Guidance Services Extensive services are available including counseling for personal issues, academic concerns, college and career selection. Services are described in detail in a brochure available from the Counseling Office. Students can sign up for an appointment at the Counseling Office and wait for a pass to be sent to them during the school day. The College and Career Center is also available and offers services to students seeking help with college applications and career guidance. Adding and Dropping Classes Students have ten (10) school days at the beginning of the semester to ADD or DROP a class without penalty.

• Students who drop within the first ten school days of the semester do so without any mark on their report card or transcript.

• Students who drop after the first ten school days of a semester up to five school days after the end of the next quarter do so with a "W" appearing on their transcript.

• Students who drop a class after the five school day grace period at the beginning of the 2nd or 4th quarter receive an “F.”

Community Service Participation Piedmont High School recognizes the efforts of any students who volunteer their time and energy to service organizations and projects. Examples include volunteer work with church or temple organizations, hospitals and convalescent homes, public agencies such as the police or recreation departments, social service agencies such as the American Cancer Society or Goodwill Industries, or community projects such as Meals on Wheels or the Berkeley Emergency Food Project. The College and Career Center has a list of possible opportunities for volunteer service. Emergency Procedures in the Event of a Major Disaster In the event of a major disaster, such as a major earthquake, students may be evacuated under staff supervision to the lawn area of the Community Center adjacent to the campus. If this area is not available, students will be evacuated to Witter Field. Staff will take roll, and then if conditions allow for their safe release, students will be signed out and allowed to leave, when parents or emergency contacts designated by parents in Infinite Campus arrive at the evacuation site. Lockers and Theft Lockers are provided strictly for the convenience of students. The school makes every effort to insure that they are secure, but at the same time cannot accept any responsibility for thefts from lockers or from any other location on campus. Combinations to newly assigned lockers are changed every summer. Students who share their combinations with others and students who do not promptly report broken lockers jeopardize the security of locker contents. Students are advised to secure their possessions at all times, especially their backpacks and Chromebooks. School textbooks and other school materials checked out to students are the responsibility of students at all times. If stolen or lost, these materials can only be replaced at the expense of the student. The school also cannot and does not assume any liability for lost or stolen personal items.

News and Announcements The student newspaper, The Piedmont Highlander, is published approximately once every three weeks. It is available free of charge at school and can be sent home (first class mail) by paid subscription. In addition, the PHS Bulletin is issued to PHS families every week which includes calendar updates, school, athletic and activities announcements as well as links to the PHS Parent Club and the Piedmont Portal for community news. A separate College and Career Center Newsletter is also published. Announcements are made over the public address system and/or by teachers in the classrooms, as well as on the marquee at the school entry. The PHS Bulletin is posted on the school’s website at http://www.piedmont.k12.ca.us/phs. Student Body Card All students are asked to pay the voluntary Associated Student Body (ASB) fee which entitles them to a photo ID card validated for free admission to all on-site athletic events (except playoff games) and at other PHS events. Students who do not wish to pay for this card will receive a free student ID card which is not valid for free or lowered price admissions to school events. Replacements for lost cards of either type are available at the school’s Main Office for a $10 fee.

Campus Policies Fundraising All athletic teams, clubs or individuals wishing to fundraise on- or off-campus must have prior administrative and Associated Student Body (ASB) approval. No sales of any kind may take place on- or off-campus without permission from the school administration and the Associated Student Body (ASB) Executive Board. See the Assistant Principal for information about the fundraising approval process. Forms can be found outside the Assistant Principal’s office located in the school’s Main Office. Library Fines Library books are checked out for three (3) weeks. Textbooks are checked out for the semester or school year, depending on the course. English texts are checked out per the timeline established by the

teacher. Students receive overdue notices via email. At the end of the school year, seniors need to clear their accounts prior to graduation. All other students who end the year with unclear accounts will not receive their class schedules during Walkthrough Registration for the following year until the account is cleared. Visitors to PHS All visitors, including those at lunchtime, are expected to register at the Main Office before spending anytime on the campus. This includes volunteers and invited guests. Piedmont High School is a closed campus to anyone who is not a student or school employee. Shadowing of a PHS student is allowed for students from out of the country, states, and those students who live in Piedmont, but attend a private school and are considering enrollment at PHS. Students who wish to have guests from other schools “shadow” them for a day must pick up permission form from the Attendance office. Students are required to request permission from their teachers at least a week ahead of the shadow date. Final permission is granted by the school administration. Students must register their guest at the Main Office, where they will be given a visitor's permit. Visitor Permit requests will be denied during times of the year when it is not in the best interest of the school to approve them, when the visitor's own school is in session, or when there is an influx of visitors on campus. Posting Flyers and Notices All organizations or individuals wishing to post flyers or notices must use the indoor and outdoor bulletin boards provided for this purpose. Flyers and notices must be approved by the school administration prior to being posted around campus. The school’s administrative team will review each flyer and only those flyers stamped “approved” will be posted on campus. All such flyers must be dated and must be posted using staples. (Staple guns may be checked out from the office for this purpose.) Taped notices must be posted using painters’ tape only. The original flyer must be brought to the office and approved before it is duplicated. Tasteless and offensive flyers will

not be approved, and unapproved flyers will be taken down. These regulations will be reviewed with all school clubs at the beginning of the school year. Weight Rooms Students may use the PHS weight rooms only under the direct and immediate supervision of a qualified and authorized teacher, coach, or supervising employee. Students who are in the weight rooms under any other circumstances are subject to school discipline and to being removed from their athletic team. The Witter Field weight room is open and supervised after school. The Morrison Gym weight room is not available except for use by PE classes or by athletic teams with the coach present in the room. Dances ASB holds several dances throughout the year. Students are required to take a Breathalyzer test and subject to having bags checked before entering each dance (see Drugs & Alcohol). Students are required to enter the dance within one hour of the start time, and are not permitted to leave until within one hour of the end time. Only PHS & MHS students may attend school dances expect for specific dances during which guests are allowed. Guest pass forms can be obtained in the Main Office. Completed forms must be returned to the Main Office at least five (5) days prior to the dance. All guests must receive prior approval.

Student Conduct Guidelines ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY Philosophy “Achieve the Honorable,” the PHS motto, means that the Piedmont High School community behaves with honesty and integrity. Honesty is a value that holds each person to tell the truth and to defend the truth. Honesty supports intellectual growth and creates a fair learning environment. Integrity is firm adherence to our values with or without the presence of others. Teachers and administrators at PHS understand that there is significant pressure to earn good grades. However, we firmly believe that academic dishonesty denies the value of education, damages the character of the individual student, and

undermines the integrity of our school community. The Academic Integrity Policy affirms that we value learning for its own sake, and that we, therefore, expect personal integrity and intellectual honesty in all academic work. Definition Having academic integrity means valuing and demonstrating positive regard for:

• Intellectual honesty • Personal truthfulness • Learning for its own sake • The creations and opinions of others (i.e.,

intellectual property) You are acting with academic integrity to the extent that you demonstrate these values, and in particular:

• Take full credit for your own work, and give full credit to others who have helped you or influenced you, or whose work you have incorporated into your own.

• Represent your own work honestly and accurately.

• Collaborate with other students only as specifically directed and authorized.

• Report breeches of academic integrity to a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

What is cheating? Cheating is defined as seeking to obtain (or aiding another to obtain) credit or improved scores through the use of any unauthorized or deceptive means. Examples of cheating include but are not limited to:

• Presenting information collected, organized, or envisioned by someone else as your own (with or without the author's permission) or allowing someone else to present your work as his or her own.

• Taking shortcuts (such as unauthorized use of study aids) that allow you to bypass steps of an assignment.

• Using prohibited materials to "help" during an exam, such as cheat sheets, graphing calculators, or cell phones.

• Asking about or sharing questions and/or answers to quizzes and exams.

• Submitting the same work for more than one assignment without express permission from your teacher(s).

Page 19: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

18

• Altering corrections or scores with the intent of changing your grade.

• Misrepresenting yourself in any way to your teachers in regard to the work you have done, such as saying you have turned in an assignment when you did not, or that you have worked longer hours than you actually did to complete an assignment.

• Fabricating information to try to earn more time, more credit, or grading leniency on an assignment, project, or exam.

• Missing class in order to avoid turning in an assignment or taking a test.

• Doing more or less than your share of a group project without permission from your teacher.

Students’ Responsibilities • Read and know the school’s Academic

Integrity Policy. • In addition to observing the PHS

Academic Integrity Policy, observe all course-specific rules and consequences established by your teachers.

• Report to the teacher if cheating is taking place and how it is being done.

• Do not copy homework or let someone else copy your homework.

• Do not use study aids (such as Sparknotes) as an alternative to completing an assignment.

• Only work with others when the teacher has specifically given permission.

• Seek only appropriate help from parents, tutors, or other students; check with the teacher prior to receiving the help to know what help and assistance is appropriate.

• If collaboration has not been specified as permissible, the assignment must be your individual honest effort.

• Take responsibility for doing your fair share on a collaborative assignment.

• On papers, do not summarize, paraphrase or quote without proper documentation. (Refer to the PHS Style Guide for further information.)

• During tests and quizzes, do not share your answers with others or use someone else’s answers as your own.

• When in doubt, clarify with the teacher what aids may be used on the test (calculator, notes, etc.).

• Do not talk during a test except to teacher.

• Do not discuss any aspect of the test until the teacher has returned it or given permission to discuss it.

Teacher Responsibilities • Be precise about expectations for

students by clearly stating the Academic Integrity Policy, orally and in writing.

• Communicate the range of consequences for Academic Integrity violations to the students.

• Address the use of study aids (e.g., SparkNotes, tutors, etc.) in course work.

• Clearly specify when collaboration with other students is permitted on an assignment.

• Review student work regularly for violations of the Academic Integrity Policy.

• Report violations of the Academic Integrity Policy regarding your own class assignments to an administrator.

• Report violations of the Academic Integrity Policy regarding another teacher’s class assignments to that teacher (i.e., when an English teacher observes students copying Math homework in English class, the English teacher should report that to the Math teacher).

• Tell students when they are allowed to discuss a test after it has been given.

Parent Responsibilities • Read and know the school’s Academic

Integrity Policy. • Help the student understand you value

academic integrity and expect the student to comply with the school’s Academic Integrity Policy.

• Support the disciplinary consequences assigned to your student if the Academic Integrity Policy is violated.

• Require students to do their own work. • When helping students with assignments,

ensure that their work remains their own.

Administrator Responsibilities • Make available to all students, teachers

and parents a copy of the school’s Academic Integrity Policy.

• Facilitate ongoing conversations and reflection about the Academic Integrity Policy.

• Administer fair and consistent consequences for offenses of the Academic Integrity Policy.

• Maintain records of Academic Integrity Policy offenses.

Procedures All parties concerned—students, parents, and administrators—are to understand that the teacher’s professional judgment will determine whether a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy has occurred. The following procedures will be followed when it is determined that the Academic Integrity Policy has been violated:

1. The teacher will document the violation and report it to the Assistant Principal via Infinite Campus. The violation will be part of the student’s permanent disciplinary record.

2. The Assistant Principal will review the student’s disciplinary record and determine whether the violation in question is the student’s first or subsequent offense.

3. The teacher will confer with the student and will contact the student’s parents. The purpose of the teacher-student conference is to review the Academic Integrity Policy, clarify why the work or behavior in question constitutes a violation of it, and help prevent future violations.

4. According to the stated expectations of individual teachers, an appropriate consequence for the offense will be imposed. Consequences for first-time and subsequent offenses are outlined below.

Consequences Consequences for a first-time violation may include but are not limited to:

• Point deduction on a quiz, test, paper, project, or homework assignment, receiving a zero or being required to re-do the assignment for no credit.

• Detention(s). • Grade lowered one (1) letter grade for the

quarter or semester report card. • A teacher may decline to write a letter of

recommendation or report it in a letter. A teacher may also rescind a recommendation after it has been sent.

Consequences for subsequent violations may include but are not limited to those listed above as well as the following:

• Repeat offense in same class: Conference called by administrator with student, teacher, parent, and counselor.

• Repeat offense, but not in the same class: Appropriate disciplinary consequence assigned by the administrator (e.g., detention and Saturday school).

• Grade lowered several letter grades for the quarter or semester report card including the possibility of receiving an “F”.

• Suspension and/or exclusion from extracurricular activities.

Detention Detention periods are 60 minutes long and are held before and after school. In accordance with state law, students may be requested to assist in picking up litter or helping out with minor office tasks as part of detention when school personnel are available to supervise such work. Students assigned detention must report to the Main Office at the designated date and time. They are expected to be on time, bring study materials with them, and to not use electronic devices of any kind. Students failing to follow these rules or refusing to behave as directed by the administrator or campus supervisor may lose extra-curricular privileges and be required to attend additional detentions and/or suspended from school. Saturday detentions may be assigned in some instances.

Page 21: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

20

Cell Phones/Listening Devices Cell phones may not be visible or used during class time. If a cell phone becomes visible, the teacher may confiscate the phone until the end of the period. If there is a repeat offense, the teacher may confiscate the phone and turn it into the Main Office until the end of the day. The administrator (or designee) may contact a parent about the confiscation and give the phone to the student at the end of the day. On the second offense, the administrator (or designee) may keep the cell phone until the parent comes in for a conference about the repeat offenses. If a student refuses to give their phone to the teacher, the student may be sent to the Assistant Principal’s office. Our objectives here are to limit classroom disruptions and distractions. Second and third offenses may also result in detentions. The fourth offense may result in a Saturday detention. After the third offense, the administration reserves the rights to have students turn in their cell phones prior to the start of school day and only obtained by the students once the school day ends. This consequence could last for a week or up to a semester. Closed Campus, Off-Limits Areas Piedmont High School is a closed campus at all times with the exception of lunch. Students are allowed to leave the campus during lunch as long as this does not interfere with the return to class on time. No students, including T.A.s, may be off-campus during class-time except at the explicit request of authorized school authorities. The governing board of Piedmont Unified School District, pursuant to Section 44808.5 of the Education Code, permits pupils enrolled at Piedmont High School to leave the school grounds during the lunch period. Section 44808.5 of the Education Code further states that neither the school district nor any officer or employee thereof shall be liable for the conduct or safety of any pupil during such time as the pupil left the school grounds pursuant to this section. Certain on- and off- campus areas adjacent to the school are also off-limits to students immediately before, during, and immediately after school hours. Specific off-limits rules include but are not limited to the following:

• Standing or sitting in designated walkway and stairway areas in the central campus which are necessary for the flow of pedestrian traffic is not allowed during passing periods and at the beginning and end of brunch and lunch.

• On school days, students may not congregate in the following areas between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.: o The street, sidewalks, and walls along

Magnolia Avenue between the stairs to the swimming pool and Highland Avenue, except the sidewalk on the south side of the street directly adjacent to the PHS marquee;

o The parking lot for Recreation Department employees located at Magnolia and Bonita Avenues;

o The collection area for Dress Best for Less (DBFL) and the surrounding areas in the immediate vicinity of the DBFL building;

o The stairs between the DBFL and the Recreation Department courts;

o The green top directly behind the DBFL building;

o The walkway between the swimming pool and Magnolia Avenue.

o Bonita Avenue and its sidewalks between Magnolia and Vista Avenues.

• Students may utilize all these areas in order to go from one place to another place, but these areas are off limits for congregating.

• On school days between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and during school events at Witter Field, whether during school hours or not, students may not congregate in these areas: o The area behind the John Morrison Gym at

Piedmont Middle School and the hillside between the back of this gym and the park pathway to the softball field;

o The hillside behind the PUSD maintenance buildings;

o The park pathway behind the PHS Student Center. This pathway to the fields may be used to go to and from school or to and from the fields with a class. It is closed for other purposes during the school day, including at brunch and lunch. (The patio area on school grounds behind the Student Center remains open for students to congregate.);

o The area behind the PHS gym and the hillside between the gym and the park pathway; this also includes the hillside below the gym blacktop.

In addition to these defined areas, students must respect other off-limits areas as designated by campus or district administrators during the year. Students must also move from any area when requested to do so by campus authorities and abide by the campus behavior requests of administrators, teachers, the campus supervisors, and other school authorities. Dress Code PHS students are expected to be appropriately dressed at all times. If at any time a student's dress or grooming is determined by the Principal to be disruptive or inappropriate to the school's educational mission and program, the student may be sent home. In addition, the following specific requirements will be in effect:

1. State law requires that all students wear shoes or other protective footgear at all times. 2. Clothing associated with unsanctioned social clubs cannot be worn or distributed on-campus. Violation of this code may result in a student being sent home and the subsequent application of disciplinary consequences, if appropriate. 3. Clothes must be sufficient to conceal undergarments. Jeans or pants that reveal undergarments may not be worn on campus. 4. Clothing or jewelry that promotes behavior or practice that is illegal (or illegal for minors) or that is inappropriate for our educational mission is not permitted. Graphics and slogans promoting the use of illegal substances are obvious examples. 5. Obscene pictures, slogans, or graphics, which convey explicit sexual or demeaning messages, are not appropriate or permitted. Garments with slogans or graphics which demean any individuals or groups of people, or which may be reasonably perceived as intending to be demeaning or derogatory are contrary to our school's mission to accept and honor diversity in our community. 6. A student may be sent home at any time by an administrator for inappropriate

clothing. Piedmont High School asks students to remember that we are an institution of higher learning and therefore, we dress accordingly.

Bicycles, Razor/Motor Scooters, Skates, Roller Blades, Skateboards, and Hoverboards Bicycles are permitted on campus, but they must be ridden with caution when entering the school and walked from the school entrance to the bicycle rack. They must be stored at the rack explicitly provided for bicycles. They may not be ridden on campus. Motor scooters and motorcycles are not allowed on the PHS campus. They may not be ridden or parked anywhere on the campus at any time. Skateboards, skates, roller blades, razor scooters, and hoverboards may not be ridden on any part of the PHS campus at any time, whether school is in session or not. These items may not be carried from class to class or at brunch or lunch. They must be stored in a locker. Students are permitted to bring skateboards or razor scooters to school only if they place them in their lockers prior to their first class of the day. They must also remove them from their lockers only after their last class of the day and only when leaving the campus directly. Students may not have scooters or skateboards in their possession before or after school while they are on campus except for the few moments it takes to store them or remove them from storage and leave campus. Violation of these rules may result in disciplinary consequences including but not limited to detention, loss of the privilege of storing a bicycle or skateboard on campus, and/or suspension from school. Drugs and Alcohol No alcohol or illegal drugs are allowed on the school campus or at school events, whether it is “on” or “off” campus events. A student may not be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at school or at school events. Possession, use, furnishing or sale of alcohol or illegal drugs or drug

Page 23: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

22

paraphernalia or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at school, at school events, or off campus school events may result in suspension and/or expulsion, loss of activity eligibility, and/or referral to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Subsequent offenses may be referred for an expulsion hearing. When students are observed engaging this behavior as a group, all students may be deemed to be in violation of school rules, not just those apprehended with the illegal drugs. It is the policy of Piedmont High School that all students participating in extra-curricular activities, such as school dances, take a Breathalyzer test before being admitted. Students who show evidence of any alcohol on this test will be refused admission, released to their parents or guardians, and/or reported to the Piedmont Police Department. Students may also be subject to school discipline. Drugs and Alcohol on Overnight Field Trips or Activity Trips These policies and procedures are designed to insure drug and alcohol free overnight trips, whether they are trips related to a particular class, sports trips, or other extra-curricular trips.

1. All students' bags, suitcases, backpacks, etc. are subject to search. 2. If alcohol or illegal drugs are plainly visible in a room when a chaperone enters it, all students in the room may be deemed to be in possession. A student innocent of possession may avoid problems by insisting to the student owning the drugs or alcohol that they be removed, or by reporting their presence to a chaperone immediately. 3. Students found to be in possession of alcohol or illegal drugs or under the influence during a trip will be sent home at the parents' expense. 4. Students in possession of illegal drugs or alcohol will also be subject to school discipline and to the school activities code upon return. The usual consequence for such possession is loss of activity eligibility, suspension and/or expulsion, and/or referral to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Harassment All students are entitled to an atmosphere at school that is free of harassment. Students who are being harassed and who feel unable through their own efforts to end the harassment should bring it to the attention of a counselor, teacher, administrator, or other school adult. It is a PUSD policy that school authorities will take appropriate action, including an investigation and application of school discipline if necessary. All reported incidents will be taken seriously and retaliation against complainants will not be tolerated. Sexual harassment, such as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, unwanted verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature, represents an especially destructive form of harassment and should not be tolerated by anyone in the school community. The school's goal is to provide an atmosphere free of all the following behaviors and any other degrading and harassing behaviors not explicitly listed: • Name calling of a sexual nature, whistling,

catcalls • Teasing about body development • Poking, pinching, patting • Inappropriate references to body parts • Bra snapping, “pantsing,” sexual gesturing or

grabbing • Wearing of clothing, buttons, etc., with sexually

offensive slogans • Spreading sexual rumors or sexually descriptive

graffiti • Inappropriate open public displays of affection • Leering or sexual gestures • Pressure for sexual activity • Continued expression of sexual interest after

being asked to stop or the making of threats on receiving a negative response to expressed sexual interest

• Insulting and degrading remarks to or about someone because of their sexual orientation.

• Hazing • Sending or distributing sexually explicit

messages, photos or videos through any means including electronic devices.

When instances of these and other similar behaviors occur on campus, it is important for all

members of the school community to help bring them to a stop. In some instances, incidents may be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Smoking and Use of Electronic Vaporizers In accordance with state law, smoking, use of chewing tobacco, use of electronic vaporizers, or use of any non-medically prescribed substance containing nicotine on any part of the campus or at school events is illegal for all students, including 18-year-old students. Violations may result in suspension. Students found smoking, chewing tobacco or using an electronic vaporizer, even if off campus, during assigned class time may also be suspended. In addition, parents and students are reminded of the new state law that changed the legal smoking age to 21. Sportsmanship at Athletic Events Piedmont High School has high expectations for the behavior of its student spectators as well as its athletes and spirit squads. All students are expected to participate in a manner that positively represents their school and reflects the best interests of athletes. Students are expected to take directions from supervisors at the gyms or fields where contests are being played. Yells and signs designed to taunt the opposition are in poor taste and are prohibited. During athletic events, the team bench and sidelines are out of bounds to student spectators. Noisemakers are not allowed at athletic events (this includes, but is not limited to drums, air-horns, etc.). Additionally, spectators and the spirit squad are not permitted to gather under baskets, gather too near the outside lines during the game, or throw objects onto the court. Derogatory remarks and yells or gestures directed toward the officials in any contest are not allowed. Students behaving inappropriately will be asked to leave the games and are subject to school discipline. All school rules and regulations are applicable at all school sanctioned athletic events. League Notice Concerning Sportsmanship The member schools of the Athletic League aspire to high standards of sportsmanship. Coaches, players, spirit squads, fans and school officials are responsible for safe and orderly athletic contests

that promote fair play and healthy competition. In games, these expectations must be honored: • Athletes are alcohol and drug free. • Opposing teams receive respect. • The decisions made by officials are respected. • Game rules are observed. • Players, coaches, fans and officials exhibit

composure. • Contests are free of trash talk, taunts and

abusive gestures. • Spirit signs and cheers show only positive

support for teams. • Noisemakers are never use

Piedmont High School abides by the NCS Ejection Policy which every student participating in sports signs at the beginning of the school year. Transferring from one school to another school may affect your athletic eligibility under North Coast Section, CIF and/or State CIF rules. It is your responsibility to see your school Principal for a copy of the rules. Suspension and Expulsion Students involved in more serious infractions or repeated minor infractions may be suspended from school for limited periods of time or expelled from the school district altogether. Students who are suspended are prohibited from attending classes and from being present on the campus or at any school-sponsored activity during the period of the suspension. They are also prohibited from being in the areas immediately adjacent to the school during the suspension or expulsion. While not every circumstance leading to expulsion or suspension is listed below, parents and students are urged to be particularly aware that an expulsion recommendation to the Board of Education is mandated by the state of California if a student causes serious physical injury to another person, possesses or furnishes any firearm or other weapon or dangerous object, brandishes a knife, sells illegal drugs, robs or extorts money from another student or engages in several other of the listed causes for suspension. Of specific note is the fact that the possession of any knives whatsoever on any public school campus or at any school event is prohibited by state law. Even knives that are legal to purchase are illegal to

Page 25: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

24

possess on a public school campus. Martial arts sticks, brass knuckles, and other such objects are not only illegal, their possession, if discovered, requires an expulsion hearing. Possession of laser pointers is not allowed on campus or at school events. Students are subject to detention assignment for possession and to suspension for shining one into the face of another person. The Board of Education strongly encourages students to promptly report the presence of weapons, injurious objects, or other suspicious activity to school authorities. The identity of any student who reports such activity shall remain confidential. Under the Education Code Section 48900, students may be suspended or expelled from school when they have: (a)(1) Caused, attempted to cause, or threatened to cause physical injury to another person. (a)(2) Willfully used force or violence upon the person of another, except in self-defense. (b) Possessed, sold, or otherwise furnished a firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object. (c) Unlawfully possessed, used, sold, or otherwise furnished, or been under the influence of, a controlled substance, an alcoholic beverage, or an intoxicant of any kind. (d) Unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell a controlled substance, an alcoholic beverage, or an intoxicant of any kind, and either sold, delivered, or otherwise furnished to a person another liquid, substance, or material and represented the liquid, substance, or material as a controlled substance, alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant. Attendance Policies Regular attendance and classroom participation are essential to the educational process. Missing class presentations, discussions, lectures, demonstrations and laboratories can be detrimental to student achievement, to grades, and even to the progress of the class itself. Parents are encouraged to plan vacations during school holidays. The Piedmont High School attendance

policies and procedures are outlined below. Please review them carefully so that both parents and students are aware of the rules, routines, and consequences. Reporting and Excusing an Absence When a student is absent, it is required that the parent/guardian either phone the Attendance Reporting Line (594-2629) or send a note to the Attendance Office explaining the reason for the absence. If an absence is cleared by phone, it is not necessary to follow up with a note. Pre-printed absence forms are also provided for your convenience. Only the signatures of the parent(s)/guardian(s) on the student emergency card are permitted. Please provide the following information:

• First and last name of the student • Name of parent • Date of absence • The specific classes missed and the

reason for the absence. • Parents/Guardians must excuse their

student’s absence within three (3) days of the time they return. If an absence is not cleared within that time, the absence will be marked as unexcused. Students are not permitted to excuse themselves on the recorder or by note. (Exception: See the section on 18-year-old students.)

• Excusing absences within three (3) days of an absence is extremely important for maintaining proper attendance procedures.

Excused Absences Under the Education Code Section 48205, students may be legally excused from school when the absence is due to:

• Personal illness or injury. • Quarantine under the direction of a county

or city health officer. • Medical, dental, optometric, or

chiropractic services rendered. • Attendance at funeral services of a

member of his or her immediate family, (one day in-state and three days out-of-state).

• Jury duty.

• Due to the illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent.

• For justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, and attendance at an educational conference when the pupil's absence is requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the Principal or a designee

• Spending time with a member of the pupil's immediate family, who is an active duty member of the uniformed services and has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from a combat zone.

• Failure to present evidence of immunization (Education Code 48216).

• Pupils in grades 7-12 who leave school (with prior approval from the Principal or designee) to obtain confidential medical services. The pupil must provide an appointment verification form from the doctor.

Students absent for an excused reason are permitted to make up missed work, tests, etc. The tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments missed during the absence. Students who miss three or more days of school in succession must present a doctor’s note, if the absences are due to illness. Unexcused Absences Students who are absent for unexcused reasons may not receive credit for work missed, including assessments, depending upon the policies of the teacher and are also subject to school discipline and exclusion from participation in extra-curricular activities. Examples of unexcused absences or tardies include but are not limited to:

• Oversleeping • Remaining on campus but missing a

specific class (e.g. to "study in the library"

or "finish a paper"). Students who are on campus must be in their assigned classes or at approved appointments with school officials.

• Truancy (e.g. cutting class or leaving class once it has started without permission of the instructor).

• Absences for which no excuse is received from the parent within three (3) school days of the student's return to school.

• Absences excused by a forged note or fraudulent phone call. The student is subject to school discipline even when parents later validate the excuse. Students may never represent themselves in writing or over the phone as their parents.

• Absences excused by a parent for reasons not defined as excused in the Education Code.

• Excessive absences of 18-year-old students, even when excused.

Teachers' Grading Policies Teachers are expected to inform students in writing of their grading policies. Students should pay careful attention to these policies and to the ways attendance might affect their grades in each class. In many courses, the academic goals set by the district and by the individual teacher cannot be met by students with large numbers of unexcused absences. Consequences for Unexcused Absences Students face a progressive schedule of consequences for unexcused absences:

1. Each unexcused absence may result in assignment of detention, which must be served within one week of the absence. 2. Within a semester, the third unexcused absence in one class and all subsequent unexcused absences in that class may result in further disciplinary actions including the possibility of suspension from school for one day. 3. Within a semester, the tenth unexcused absence in all classes and all subsequent unexcused absences may

Page 29: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

28

result in suspension of the student from school for one day. 4. If Saturday School is offered; it may be substituted for some suspensions or detentions at the discretion of the school administration. Please see the sections on "Detention" in this handbook. 5. Good attendance is required of all students participating in extra-curricular activities. Four (4) or more unexcused absences in one quarter may result in a student becoming ineligible for all extra-curricular activities. Please consult the Activities Code for the complete rules regarding attendance and eligibility.

Consequences for Excused Absences There are also consequences for large numbers of excused absences. Absences can have a detrimental effect on students’ coursework. Depending on the circumstances, the Assistant Principal or the counselor may call for a conference with the student's parent(s) if it appears such a conference could result in an attendance improvement. The goals of such a conference would be 1) To determine why the absences are occurring. 2) To explore alternative educational placements

if appropriate. 3) To discuss with the student and parent the

possible exclusion from participation in extra-curricular activities.

4) To consider whether any further school or parent intervention is needed in order to improve attendance.

Keeping Track of Absences Every day the attendance office, through the use of a phone auto-dialer, sends out messages to parents if a teacher reported their student absent during the course of a school day and if no excuse from the parent has yet been received. These notices are a courtesy call to parents that the school has not yet received a written excuse or phone message. The first courtesy call occurs at 10:30 AM for the first few classes on a given day and the second courtesy call occurs at 5:00 PM for all remaining classes on a given day.

On the third day, these un-cleared absences automatically become labeled as unexcused with important consequences for students' grades and eligibility. Families receiving such notices must act immediately to correct any reporting errors or to have the absences excused.

Within the limits of what is possible with existing school personnel, the school attempts to keep parents informed of student absences. In addition, whenever possible, parents will be called by school officials concerning absences when:

• No excuse has been received from the parent regarding an all day absence.

• School officials suspect that an excuse received is fraudulent.

• A student is in danger of serious consequences with a further cut.

In addition parents should note that total absences are also printed on report cards for their information. A student's failure to keep careful watch on his/her attendance record can have very serious consequences. Tardies Students should know the tardy policy of each of their teachers. Unexcused tardies may result in the loss of academic points and/or minor disciplinary penalties imposed by the teacher. In addition to these teacher imposed penalties, after the fifth tardy in a class in any semester, the teacher may also submit a referral to the Assistant Principal which may result in a school detention for each further tardy. Leaving School before the End of the School Day Students who need to leave during the day must bring a note to the office prior to leaving campus. Students feeling ill must call a parent/guardian from the office before going home. Students that leave campus without checking out with the attendance office will be given a cut for the classes they miss. Parents cannot excuse these absences afterwards. If is a safety concern and the school is responsible for knowing students’ whereabouts at all time during the school day.

Rights of Eighteen-Year-Old Students Eighteen-year-old students are adults and as such may legally excuse themselves for absences under certain conditions. As with excuses presented by parents, state law requires a believable, reasonable excuse if the excuse is to be accepted by school authorities. Eighteen-year-old students wishing to exercise this privilege within the policy outlined by the school must meet with the Assistant Principal when they turn eighteen. Eighteen-year-old students must have their parents sign an agreement allowing them to excuse themselves from school. This form is kept in the Main Office and can be revoked if school personnel deem that a student is abusing this privilege. Eighteen-year-old students attempting to excuse tardies should be aware that the school will not accept such excuses unless accompanied by a note from a doctor's or dentist's office or unless corroborated by another responsible adult. Like other students, eighteen-year-old students must sign out at the office when they leave school early. Holiday Absence Procedures As with all anticipated absences, parents must notify the school that their student is excused for a religious observance. Failure to take this step may result in the absence being treated as unexcused. Students who are absent due to a religious observance are expected to make up any class assignments missed within a time period that is reasonable per Education Code 48205. We encourage students to notify staff in advance so that necessary accommodations can be arranged to minimize the effect of the absence.

Activities Code Activities Covered by the Code The Principal shall determine which school activities are subject to the activities code and shall make clear to each activity director, coach, club sponsor, etc. whether the code applies to his/her activity. The following considerations shall guide the Principal in making this determination: 1. All school sports including cheerleading are covered by this code.

2. All activities, which are extra-curricular in nature, are covered by this code. 3. Activities that include only occasional lunchtime meetings are not covered by this code unless so stipulated by the Principal or the advisor of the activity. If, however, a club or activity of this nature participates in off-campus events in which students are representing Piedmont High School, student participation in the activity is covered by this code in two ways:

a. A student ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities because of earlier violations of the code may not be eligible to participate in the club off-campus activity. b. A student who violates this code in the course of participating in the off-campus activity may be declared ineligible for other extra-curricular activities as provided for in this code and may be declared ineligible for continued membership in the club at the discretion of the Principal.

4. Attendance at all school dances is covered by the Activities Code. Students who are declared ineligible may not attend these events. Attendance as an audience member at athletic and dramatic events is not, however, covered by the code. Students who are ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities are eligible to attend these events unless prohibited to do so for school disciplinary reasons not related to the activities code. 5. A student may not run for elective ASB office or try out for Spirit Squad if the student is ineligible at the time of the election or tryout. ASB officers who are declared ineligible may be removed from the ASB at the Principal's discretion. Conduct Students participating in extra-curricular activities assume responsibility for knowing and following this code and for accepting the penalties if they violate the code. Students participating in activities are expected to: 1. Behave in ways that will bring credit and honor

to Piedmont High School and to themselves, their teachers, coaches, parents and fellow students. Appropriate conduct is expected

Page 31: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

30

both on and off campus at all times. Students are expected to abide by the school's academic integrity policy.

2. Attend all classes regularly. 3. Play fairly and cleanly in athletic competitions.

Students will follow regulations, cooperate with officials, and display good sportsmanship in both wins and losses.

4. Not use alcohol, electronic vaporizers, or illegal drugs.

Eligibility Participation in extra-curricular activities is a privilege extended to students who are progressing adequately (both academically and behaviorally) toward their high school diploma. Eligibility for extra-curricular activities is determined by the student's grades and by student adherence to the code of conduct outlined below. The Principal determines final determination of eligibility in any particular case. Grades To be eligible for participation in extra-curricular activities, a student must have met the following grade requirements during the last regular grade reporting period preceding the student’s participation in the activity: 1. The student must have received a passing

grade in courses representing at least 20 units. 2. The student must have attained at least a 2.0

grade point average in all coursework attempted.

3. The student must not have received two more than failing grades (F’s).

4. In the event of an “Incomplete” grade, the conditional grade submitted by the teacher will be used in determining eligibility until the Incomplete is cleared.

An equivalent course taken in summer school may help to re-establish eligibility if a 2.0 GPA is achieved when the grade for the made-up course is substituted for the grade that caused the student to have less than a 2.0 GPA in the first place. An academic grade in an equivalent correspondence course may also be used to substitute for a low grade in a regular course for purposes of determining eligibility. If the student is ineligible due to incompletes, the student has until the deadline on the incomplete form to complete the

class for a letter grade to have the GPA recalculated to determine eligibility. Grade changes that allow a student to become eligible must be officially changed on a student’s transcript by no later than the school’s date of determination for a given grading period. On the date of determination, non-eligible students will not be able to become eligible for the next grading period until the next date of determination. Below are the dates of determination for the 2018 – 2019 school year. Second Progress Report Period Ends: October 12th, 2018

Determination Date: October 24th, 2018

First Semester Ends: December 21st, 2018

Determination Date: January 16th, 2019

Fifth Progress Report Period Ends: March 15th, 2019

Determination Date: March 27th, 2019

Second Semester Ends: May 31st, 2019

Determination Date: Not Applicable

Prohibited Activities with Specific Penalties Behavior Behavior, which in the judgment of the Principal seriously discredits the student or the school, whether, this behavior is on or off campus, is prohibited. On-campus behavior, which may warrant suspension from school, and off-campus behavior, which warrants citation by the police, will be reviewed by the Principal in order to determine whether the student's continued participation in extra-curricular activities is appropriate. In response to such behavior the Principal may impose penalties ranging from a brief suspension from extra-curricular activities to a full suspension from activities for current and/or future semesters. Attendance 1. Absences on the day of an event.

a. A student participating in extra-curricular activities may not have any unexcused absences on the day of an extra-curricular event in order to participate in the event.

b. Failure to attend the majority (+51%) of a student's assigned classes prior to time for dismissal for the extra-curricular

er

event, even when the absences from these classes are excused by the parent, will make the student ineligible to participate in the event. In compelling circumstances, the Principal may make exceptions to this rule.

c. For purposes of determining eligibility for extra-curricular events, eighteen-year-old students may not excuse themselves on the day of an event unless accompanied by documentation such as a medical appointment verification form, etc.

d. These provisions will apply to events such as games or performances and not to practices or rehearsals unless the advisor of the activity is so notified in advance by the Principal.

e. Provisions a and b above will be monitored in the following way: The administration will monitor student attendance on a spot-check basis on the day of an event and may declare a particular student ineligible for that day's event on the basis of the facts discovered. In making spot-checks, it is expected that particular attention may legitimately be paid by administrators to the attendance of students who have had a poor record of compliance with school attendance rules. When a student is discovered to have violated a and b above and still participated in the event(s) in question in the previous week, the student will be declared ineligible for the next similar event. In the case of a sport, the next similar event will mean the next game in the schedule. In the case of a dramatic or musical performance, the Principal will exercise discretion in assigning a consequence, which may range from detention to a declaration of ineligibility for future dramatic or musical events.

2. Students may become ineligible for

all extra-curricular participation at the quarter if 2 unexcused absences in any one class or 4 unexcused absences in all classes combined in a

quarter. This provision will be monitored by the school administration in the following way: Any student who is in danger of being declared ineligible because of this rule will be notified in person, time permitting, by the school administration when one further cut will cause this rule to be enforced. This rule will then be enforced when a further cut has taken place after such notification has occurred. In the event the school administration has not issued such a warning, eligibility will be revoked without warning after a student accumulates 4 unexcused absences in one class at the quarter, or 8 unexcused absences in all classes in the quarter.

3. Whenever a student accumulates 4 excused absences in any one class at the quarter or 20 excused absences in all classes, the Principal will review that student's attendance, extra-curricular and academic record and will make a determination whether it is in the student's or the school's best interests for the student to be allowed to continue in extra-curricular activities. The Principal will consider the reasons for the absences and the pattern of the absences in making this determination.

Sportsmanship Coaches and activity sponsors will respond to minor violations and will report serious violations to the Principal. The Principal may impose a consequence ranging from suspension from the activity for a brief time to suspension for the duration of the activity. Alcohol and Drugs The school does not condone any use of alcohol or illegal drugs by students. The category of illegal drugs includes steroids not prescribed by a physician as well as any controlled substance. The school also recognizes the difficulty of monitoring student use of these substances outside of the

Page 33: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

32

school day or outside of school events. Therefore, the rules below address primarily the use of illegal drugs or alcohol that is broadly school related. The following specific rules will guide the school administration in dealing with use of alcohol and drugs by students involved in extra-curricular activities: 1. When the Principal is presented with

convincing evidence that a student has done any of the following, the student may be suspended from all extra-curricular activities: • Possessed, consumed, or under the

influence of alcohol or illegal drugs in any amount, or possessed, used, furnished, or sale of alcohol or illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia, at any time during school or at any school sponsored event,

• Possessed, consumed, or under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs in any amount, or possessed, used, furnished, or sale of alcohol or illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia on the day of an extra-curricular event prior to or during that event, even if such use did not take place during school,

• Possessed, consumed, or under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs in any amount, or possessed, used, furnished, or sale of alcohol or illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia at any time on the grounds of any school in the Piedmont Unified School District, or

• Knowingly been present in a group of persons using alcohol or illegal drugs during the school day or on school or PUSD grounds at any time without immediately absenting him or herself from such a group upon discovery of such illegal use.

The following rules shall guide the suspension from extra-curricular activities: a. Athletes may be dropped for the

remainder of the sports season. b. Performing arts students participating in

an extra-curricular performing arts program may be dropped through the final performance of that program. For example, Bird Calling, a musical, the

Jazz band, and/or clubs, i.e. Mock Trial, Debate, JSA, etc.

c. School officers may be removed from office and from the leadership class.

d. A student not currently involved in any extra-curricular activities at the time of the infraction may be suspended from all extra-curricular activities for six weeks from the date of the infraction or from the date of the discovery of the infraction, whichever is later. If the suspensions referred to in lines a-d above occur with less than six school weeks left in the remainder of a season/activity in which the student is involved, the student may also be suspended from any further extra-curricular activities until a date six school weeks from the date of the original suspension.

e. When students go on overnight events such as athletic tournaments, they are to understand that the entire trip from time of departure to time of return, whether by school bus or private vehicle, is part of the event, and any use or possession of alcohol or illegal drugs during this time will be deemed to be a violation occurring during school time.

2. All directors of extra-curricular activities and all coaches must report all instances of alcohol or drug use (as outlined above) on the part of students involved in their activity or sport to the Principal.

Use of Tobacco The school strongly discourages the use of tobacco by students. Students smoking or chewing tobacco, using electronic vaporizers or using any products containing tobacco or nicotine on school grounds or at any school-sponsored activity are subject to school discipline. Students are also subject to the disciplinary action by the coach, activity director, and/or athletic director. Probation Academic Probation CANNOT be granted to a student at Piedmont High School who did not earn at least a 2.0 GPA or has earned less than 20 school credits for a given quarter. However, under

Page 34: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

er

specific circumstances, three types of probation are available to students who have been declared ineligible. These are as follows: Probation for Incoming Freshmen Incoming freshmen with less than a 2.0 GPA or more than one citizenship “U” upon their final 8th grade report card who wish to participate in a fall sport may request a probationary eligibility period during the first quarter of their 9th grade year only. Interested freshmen may apply to the Assistant Principal for this probationary status. If the Principal grants probation, the Assistant Principal and the student’s Counselor will monitor the student’s behavior and academic progress until the end of the first progress report period. If the student is maintaining a GPA above a 2.0, the probationary status will be removed. If the student is not maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or above, the student will be deemed ineligible and will be removed from the team.

Ineligible with Permission to Work Out with Team Students who are ineligible for participation in athletic competition solely because of academic grades are sometimes allowed to practice with the team even though they cannot suit up or play in the games or travel with the team for games and competitions. Permission to do so must be sought first from the individual coach, and then from the Principal or designee, who shall determine whether it is in the student’s or the school’s best interest to permit this exception. If granted this permission, a student who becomes ineligible mid-season and who is receiving P.E. Athletics credit for playing a team sport will not receive credit. A student who has been granted this option will be monitored by the Assistant Principal, Director of Athletics and Counselor until the end of the given quarter. If the student is able to raise his/her grades to a 2.0 GPA or above and earns at least 20 credits in the given quarter, will be deemed eligible and will again be able to participate in any remaining athletic competitions. Regular Probation All students who have been declared ineligible solely unexcused or excessive excused absences may apply for probationary eligibility for extra-curricular activities under the circumstances outlined below. The intent in establishing this

probationary system is to alter self-destructive student behavior and/or attendance problems in a positive direction while simultaneously providing for full student participation in extra-curricular activities.

A student may apply for probation for a specific quarter if he/she has NOT been granted regular probation previously at Piedmont High School, excluding freshman fall semester probation. Probation can only be granted once during high school. The application for regular probation shall consist of a letter written by the student and addressed to the Principal, stating:

a. The reasons that probation is being requested,

b. The reasons, from the student's view, he/she has excessive excused or unexcused absences (cuts)

c. Action steps the student will take to change his/her behavior to avoid unsatisfactory grades in the future and maintain a GPA above a 2.0 during the period of probation and beyond.

The letter must be signed by the student and by the student's parent or guardian. While the application is being considered, the student will be ineligible for participation in any games, performances, or events. The Principal will determine at the time of the application whether the student may or may not practice with the team while the application is being considered, if that is an appropriate issue.

The application for probation must be filed within one week of the original declaration of ineligibility (except in the summer when school is not in session), whether that ineligibility was declared on a school-wide list based on grades posted for a regular grading period or was declared in the middle of a quarter because of excessive cutting or other behavior by a particular student.

The student's behavior between the declaration of ineligibility and the consideration of the application for probation shall be a factor in the Principal's decision whether to grant the probation. The intent

Page 35: Student Handbook - Piedmont Unified School District

34

of this aspect of the rule is to alter the student's behavior as soon as possible in midstream. It is hoped this will discourage a student with already poor attendance from continuing the poor attendance pattern for a long period of time before he/she applies for probation just in time for the beginning of a particular sports season or other extra-curricular event. Probation must be granted prior to the school’s dates of determination.

If the Principal grants the student's request for probation, he/she shall state in writing to the student the expiration date of the probationary period, the penalties which shall accompany the probation (such as being benched for a limited number of games or events), and the conditions under which the probation will be revoked. It is to be expected that the administrator will impose conditions pertinent to individual student problems and will require public service to the school or community throughout the sport or activity season from each student approved for probation.

The Assistant Principal and the school’s Director of Athletics will monitor a student who is granted probation for the entire sport or activity season. Students on probation will present to the Assistant Principal a weekly evaluation of their work signed by each teacher. After reviewing these evaluations, the Assistant Principal will work with the Director of Athletics, to determine whether the student is eligible for the next game or event. The Director of Athletics will issue a permission slip to those deemed eligible, which must be presented by the student to the coach or activity director. No coach will permit a probationary student to participate in a game or event unless the student presents such a valid permission slip approved by the Director of Athletics and school administrator.

PUSD Responsible Use Policy for Technology Resources We will act in a responsible, ethical and legal manner consistent with the mission and motto of Piedmont: “Achieve the Honorable”. Piedmont Unified School District is pleased to offer access to technology resources to promote educational excellence and innovation. While using

District technology resources on or near school property, in school vehicles and buses, at school-sponsored activities, as well as using district technology resources off-campus, the general rules of school behavior apply. Just as we are responsible for behavior in a classroom or on school grounds, they must also be responsible when using school computer networks or technologies. By virtue of usage, users agree to the terms and conditions of this policy. 1. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY COMPUTER ACCOUNT AND EMAIL ACCOUNT. I understand that passwords are private and that I should not share my password with anyone. I understand that I am responsible for all activities done through my account. I will not allow others to use my account name and password, or try to use that of others. I understand that it is important to log off the computer at the end of every session so another user cannot use my password. 2. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW I TREAT OTHER PEOPLE. I will use email and other means of communications responsibly. I will not send or post hateful or harassing mail, make discriminatory or derogatory remarks about others, or engage in bullying, harassment, or other antisocial behaviors while in school or out of school. 3. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY USE OF THE PUSD NETWORK. I will use district technology resources responsibly. I will not search, retrieve, save, circulate or display hate-based, offensive or explicit material. I understand that if I see misuse, I will report it immediately to a teacher. 4. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLE’S PROPERTY ONLINE. I will obey copyright laws. I will properly cite materials from the Internet and other digital resources, including graphics, which are used in projects or reports. I will not illegally download or distribute materials protected by copyright. Copyright law can be very confusing. If there are questions, I should ask the librarian. I will not attempt to gain unauthorized access to the school network or to any other computer system through the school network, or go beyond my authorized access. This includes attempting to log in through another person’s

account or access another person's files. These actions are prohibited, even if only for the purposes of "browsing." 5. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR EDUCATIONAL USE WHILE AT SCHOOL. I will follow instructions provided by teachers and other school staff in the use of personal technologies during school. I understand that access to the Internet or other District communication systems from personal technology is limited to wireless access points on the school campus and is not available via hardwire connections. I will not use District technology resources to conduct for-profit business activities, to engage in religious activities nor for advertising and commercial purposes. I understand that the use of district technology resources is not private; students should not expect that files stored on or transmitted via the District’s resources will be confidential. All digital transmissions are subject to inspection and/or monitoring by District employees and other officials. Digital storage is PUSD property, and as such, network administrators will review files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that students are using technology responsibly. The District intends to cooperate with the investigation of any legitimate law enforcement agency should any user action on the Network lead to such an investigation. 6. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY LANGUAGE. I will use appropriate language in my email messages, online postings, and other digital communications with others. I will not use profanity, vulgarities or any other inappropriate language as determined by school administrators. 7. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY CONDUCT ONLINE. I understand that what I do on the Internet and/or social networking websites should not negatively impact the school learning environment and/or my fellow students, teachers and administrators. 8. I AM RESPONSIBLE TO BE HONEST WHILE I AM ONLINE. I understand that impersonating or pretending to be someone else is forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to, sending out email,

creating accounts, or posting messages or other online content in someone else's name. 9. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR PROTECTING THE SECURITY OF THE PUSD NETWORK. I will not attempt to bypass security settings or Internet filters, or interfere with the operation of the network by installing software on school computers. I understand that vandalism, physical and virtual, is prohibited. I understand that I need authorization from a school administrator/teacher to use personal electronic devices that I bring to school. 10. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR FOLLOWING SCHOOL RULES WHENEVER I PUBLISH ANYTHING ONLINE. I will follow all guidelines set forth by the PUSD and/or my teachers when publishing schoolwork online. I understand that it is unsafe to post any personal information about myself, including but not limited to: my name, address, phone number or school. I will not post photos of students with their first and last names on any online site. All rules of conduct in School Board Policy and Student Handbooks apply when accessing the Network and/or utilizing computers and electronic devices. Students, parents and guardians should also recognize that District technology resources extend outside of the school itself and into off-campus remote locations such as homes via the Internet. The District’s jurisdiction to enforce student behavior and discipline policies and rules shall apply whether the misuse or violation is at school or away from school as long as the District’s technology resources are being used in the inappropriate behavior. If a student violates any of these rules, his/her use may be terminated and future access may be denied. Disciplinary action may also result. If possible criminal activity is discovered; the proper law enforcement authorities will be notified. Disciplinary action for students shall be in accordance with existing discipline policies and may include suspension or expulsion in accordance with the laws of the State of California and PUSD policy.

Metric & Common ConversionsThe metric system is logically based on powers of 10. The basic unit of length is the meter (symbol, m), that of volume the liter (L), and that of mass the gram (g). Prefixes are added to these units to indicate powers of 10 larger or 10 smaller.
