Griffith College offers two-trimester diplomas that provide an alternative pathway to Griffith University if you’re not eligible for direct entry or you are looking for a supportive entry to tertiary education. After completing your diploma, you’ll be eligible for entry to second year of a Griffith bachelor degree, so you’ll lose no time in graduating.1

Foundation programWe also offer a Foundation Program for students who didn’t finish senior studies in high school and aren’t eligible for entry to a diploma as a mature aged student. You’ll be trained in the knowledge and skills needed for successful university study and be able to acquire prerequisites for specific Griffith University degrees. Griffith College Foundation Program graduates are eligible to apply for direct entry to many Griffith College diplomas and Griffith University degrees.

Program scheduleGriffith College operates three trimesters each year with intakes in February, June and October. Not all programs have an October intake; refer to the program details in this guide.Diploma programs and the Foundation Program consist of eight courses studied over two or three trimesters with part-time study options available.

Mode of studyYou will study on-campus and attend a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, group work and other practical activities, depending on your field of study. On-campus learning means you are required to attend the contact hours specified for each course which is generally four hours per course per week and could be more in some programs.

Getting settled

Orientation and registrationOrientation is a great time to meet your classmates, get to know your teachers and to look around campus before study begins. In order to make orientation stress free we open class registration a few weeks beforehand so you can sort out most of the paperwork before you arrive on campus. Your orientation program will provide all the information you need to settle in at Griffith College as quickly as possible, so attendance is compulsory. Student mentoring programExperienced students continuing their studies at the College are appointed as student mentors, and will help you adjust and settle into university study. Their support continues to be available throughout the trimester.

Life and learning

Bridging subjectsBridging subjects are available if you do not have the prerequisites or assumed knowledge for your chosen program, or would like to revise your knowledge. For more information visit griffith.edu.au/college/bridging-subjects

Maths supportWe recognise the importance of strong mathematics foundations in the Engineering, Health Sciences and Science fields and in response, have developed embedded mathematics modules, collectively called ‘Essential Mathematics’, within these diplomas. Learning supportOur comprehensive learning support framework gives you the best opportunity to succeed in your studies at no extra cost and includes:

• Lecturer consultation – lecturers are available each week to meet with students outside class and discuss course topics.

• Assignment help - student learning advisors are available to talk through assignment questions, essay structuring and writing and referencing.

• Study skills and time management workshops –available throughout the trimester, these workshops focus on developing study skills in areas such as time management, academic writing skills and examination techniques.

• Peer assisted learning – high performing students are available to mentor other students through their courses in a tutoring type format.

Technology and methodologyTeaching and learning is constantly evolving and we are keeping pace by introducing a number of innovative resources in the classroom. Online learning management, video lecture capture and online textbooks are just the start. The College has also integrated new learning techniques such as flipped and blended learning to help deliver content in a way that engages students and develops collaboration and communication skills. You are strongly encouraged to purchase your own laptop/tablet to take full advantage of learning with technology.

Welfare guidanceAssistance is always close-by. You can access free and confidential welfare and counselling services from our team of experienced staff. They can help you adjust to your new life as a student, and cope with personal stresses or concerns.

Transition to Griffith UniversityEvery trimester, the College holds a graduation ceremony for students who successfully complete their Griffith College program. LocationAs a Griffith College student, you are so close to Griffith University you are already there. Griffith College is located on Griffith University’s Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses.

The Mt Gravatt campus is situated in tranquil bushland with panoramic views, providing the perfect atmosphere to relax with friends or focus on some extra study.

Griffith’s Gold Coast campus is the largest of the University’s five campuses and boasts a range of new, state of the art facilities. Visit griffith.edu.au/college/arrival/our-campuses

Cycling If you cycle, then you are in luck - free bicycle parking rails are located on all campuses.

AccommodationGriffith provides both on and off-campus accommodation options. Off-campus share housing is the most common option. Privately managed and close to campus, you can find three to six bedroom options with furniture included. Clubs and societiesGriffith University has over 120 clubs in cultural, religious, political, educational, sporting, professional and special interest areas. Learning and support

Ramona Petrilla is currently studying the Diploma of Hotel Management at Griffith College. Upon graduation she hopes to move to the Gold Coast to continue her hospitality studies in the Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management. ‘With this degree I hope to become a hotel manager on the Gold Coast, and maybe work overseas in other hotels as well.’

‘I decided to study at Griffith College because I felt that it would offer a great foundation for my education. I am also using the experience I am gaining in studying my diploma to help direct my choice of bachelor degree. FoundationThe Foundation Program provides a bridge between secondary school and undergraduate studies. Upon graduation you can enter the first year of a broad range of bachelor degrees or progress to a diploma to bachelor pathway with up to a year of credit.

DiplomaIf you are not eligible for direct entry to university, a Griffith College diploma pathway is your best alternative.

Each diploma program provides a pathway to second year of the associated Griffith University degree. An extended range of degree pathways with varying amounts of credit are also available, and outlined in this guide.

Associate degreeThe Associate Degree in Commerce and Business is a two-year program leading to the third year of specified Griffith University commerce and business degrees.

Griffith College Diploma of Commerce and Diploma of Hotel Management graduates who do not meet degree progression requirements are eligible to progress to the Associate Degree with credit.

At Griffith College we offer three levels of programs all progressing to Griffith University with varying amounts of credit.

Our Foundation Program is equivalent to Year 12 (senior high school) and provides a bridge between secondary school and undergraduate studies. Queensland’s first female Police Commissioner in 159 years is Katarina Carroll, a proud Griffith University graduate. Katarina studied Bachlelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies and was the recipient of the university’s inaugural Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2018. A trailblazing role model for women in the male-dominated police and fire services, Katarina also became Australia’s first female fire commissioner in 2015 after spending time as Police Assistant Commissioner in 2010 and responsible for security at the 2014 G20 Summit in Brisbane.

About this program

Our Associate Degree in Commerce and Business is a two-year program leading to the third year of a Griffith University Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management or Bachelor of Business degree. Griffith College Diploma of Commerce or Hotel Management graduates who do not meet requirements to enter the second year of the Griffith University Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management or Business are eligible for one year of credit within the Associate Degree.

If you haven’t completed studies in the “assumed knowledge” areas for your chosen program, you are still eligible for an offer to study with us. However, we strongly encourage you to take one of our bridging subjects to help you catch up. You can take bridging subjects in your first trimester alongside your regular courses.
