• Get to know your customers, let them have input, educate and inform on nutrition and meal service

• Kids love food- it’s easy to create fun ways to engage students in Child Nutrition Programs!


Planning Student Engagement

• Student Focus Groups K-12 (SY 14-15)• Based on the feedback our CNP Central Office staff discussed ways to improve menus and decrease plate

waste

• Focused on 9-12 Segment (SY15-16)• Student Government• District Administration, School Principals, and Café staff• District Long Range Strategic Plan

• Culinary Cook Off (SY 15-16)• Met with Culinary Arts Instructor and Chef• Discussed the purpose of the program and anticipated results• Found a sponsor and product

• Nutrition Education Connect Tour Program (SY 16-17)• Pilot 15-16 at Norco Elementary• Worked with District curriculum staff• Agreed on placement of this program in the school day (not to impose on minutes of the day)• Offered to all K-2 schools as an option

Want a chance to win some great prizes? Enter a Pork Carnita recipe and menu into the CNP Department’s 2nd annual recipe contest. Every culinary student that submits a qualifying recipe will receive an I-tunes gift card.Multiple recipes may be submitted , however, only one gift card per person. Students will compete the week of January 23rd, 2017 with the judging taking place January 26th, 2017.

The winning Carnita recipe & menu will be served on the Child Nutrition Menu , Fall 2017. Special Recognition will be given to the winner.

Recipe & Menu Contest Guidelines

Recipes must be:1. Acceptable to students in Middle and High Schools2. Economical 3. Attractive Plate Presentation 4. Moderate added fat and salt5. Practical in school meal preparation and service environment6. Use Brookwood Farms Carnitas and create a menu that includes main entrée and sides.

Note: Recipes and Menu must be neatly typed and available the day of judging.
