don’t have a science back-ground, are less confidentabout teaching it.

It is im-portant forschools tomake avail-able free on-line course

for teachersto help them ef-fectively en-

gage their pupilswith this impor-

tant subject.

THE METHOD

While all teaching methods im-proved the pupils’ understand-ing of evolution, a study pub-lished in the journal ‘Science

of Learning’ found that the story-based approach com-bined with abstract examples of evolutionwere the most effectivelessons.

A randomised con-trolled trial found thatchildren learn aboutevolution more ef-fectively when en-gaged through storiesread by the teacher,than through doing tasksto demonstrate the sameconcept. The scientists investi-gated several different methods ofteaching evolution in primary schools, to testwhether a pupil-centred approach (where

pupils took part in an activity) or a teacher-centred approach (where pupils were read astory by the teacher), led to a greater im-provement in understanding of the topic. Thestudy recruited 2,500 primary school studentswho were tested for the understanding of evo-

lutionary concepts before and after thelessons. Professor Laurence Hurst,

Director of the MilnerCentre for Evolutionat the University ofBath, led the study.
