Student Data

The Specific Duties within the Equality Act 2010 require public authorities to outline the steps that have been taken to identify and

collect relevant information within the Strategic Equality Plan Annual Report. This report details the diversity of the student

population for the academic year 2013 to 2014. The statistical information is based on the information provided by 22,977 campus

based students during enrolment in September 2013 and covers all protected characteristics. The data is broken down by campus

so that the diversity of students on each of the University of South Wales’ five campuses can be examined. Where possible,

benchmarking statistics are included from the Equality Challenge Unit’s ‘Equality in higher education: Statistical report 2014, Part

two: Students’.

Age: The largest proportion of students are aged 18 to 20 (31%), followed by ages 21 to 24 (29%).

Disability: 10.5% of students have declared that they are disabled.

Gender Identity: 0.5% of students have changed their gender identity.

Race: 81.4% of USW undergraduate students are White British, 5.9% are British students from a Black or Minority

Ethnic group and 12.7% are international students.

Religion & Belief: 45.6% of students have no religion; 32.4% are Christian and 4.9% are Muslim

Sex: 47.8% of students are male; 52.2% are female

Sexual Orientation: 81% of students are heterosexual; 4.7% are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Other

ECU data shows that 53.8% of all students at Welsh universities are aged 21 and under, with 15.6% aged 22 to 25, 16% 26 to 35

and 15.7% age 36 and over. As ECU data uses different age categories to USW, it is difficult to draw comparisons with this data.

89.5% of USW students have declared that they are not disabled; less than 1% have not declared either way (just 10 students), with 10.5% of students declaring that they are disabled.

Of those students that declared that they are disabled, the highest proportion (5.1%) have a specific learning disability, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or ADHD etc. There are low numbers of students with other impairments.

There is a small difference between prevalence of disability and USW campus, with the largest proportion of disabled students studying at Cardiff Campus (15%) and Caerleon Campus (14%) and the smallest proportion of disabled students studying at Treforest Campus (8.2%) and Glyntaff Campus (8.7%).

Data from all UK HEIs shows that 90.5% of students are not disabled and 9.5% have declared a disability; this data is mirrored for

that of Welsh HEIs. USW data appears to show a slightly higher prevalence of disability than the UK and Welsh averages, with

10.5% of students being disabled and 89.5% not being disabled. UK data shows that 48.5% of disabled students have a specific

learning disability, with lower proportion of students having other impairments. This data appears to be similar to USW data where

5.1% of disabled students have a specific learning disability.

During 2013/14, students were asked whether their gender identity was the same as the gender they were assigned at birth. 87.6% of students answered ‘yes’ and 0.5% of students stated ‘no’, with 6.8% refusing to disclose and 5.1% missing out the question.

Due to the low numbers of students declaring ‘no’, the data is presented for the whole of USW, and not by campus, and in percentages only.

Figure 5 – Gender Identity of Students

Location of Study Description % Yes % No % Refused % Missing Data

Totals 87.6% 0.5% 6.8% 5.1%

The ECU reports a high level of institutions that do not currently report on this data. However, for those institutions that do, 15.3%

of students answered ‘yes’, 0.3% of students declared that their gender identity is different to what they were assigned at birth,

1.5% refused to disclose this information and 82.9% left the question blank. This shows that USW has a significantly higher rate of

disclosure for gender identity than the average for all UK HEIs.

81.4% of USW undergraduate students are White British, 5.9% are British students from a Black or Minority Ethnic group and 12.7% are international students.

56.6% of postgraduates are White British, 4.6% are British students from a Black or Minority Ethnic group and 38.8% are international students.

The following table shows the numbers and percentages of undergraduate students by ethnicity and faculty. It categorises the

students into four groups – ‘UK White’ (for White British students), ‘UK BME’ (for British Black & Minority Ethnic students), ‘Non UK’

(for international students) and ‘Not known’ for students who have not answered the question or have chosen prefer not to say.

The above tables show that 5.9% of the undergraduate population is students who are from a Black or Minority Ethnic group, with

4.6% of all postgraduates being from a BME group.

Data for all UK HEIs shows that 80.4% of UK domiciled students are White and 19.6% of UK domiciled students are from a Black or

Minority Ethnic group. This is lower for Welsh HEIs, with 92% of UK domiciled students being White and 8% being from a Black or

Minority Ethnic group. Of the 8% of UK domiciled students at Welsh institutions that are from a BME group – 1.9% are Black, 3.2%

are Asian, 0.5% are Chinese, 1.9% are of Mixed origin and 0.5% are from another ethnic minority group. There is a lower

proportion of BME students at USW than the Welsh average.

The University of South Wales is currently undertaking extensive analysis of student data by race for the Race Equality Charter

Mark project. This data, and any actions that will be taken as a result of it, will be published for the University’s application for the

Charter in the spring term of 2016 and for the Strategic Equality Plan Annual Report 2014/15.

on this data, only 36.9% of students provided the information, with 6% refusing and 57.1% leaving the question blank. This shows

that USW disclosure rates for religion and belief are significantly higher than the sector average, with only 9.7% of students not

providing this information.

47.8% of students at USW are male; 52.2% are female.

*The courses assigned with FBS Faculty, FCES Faculty, FCI Faculty and FLSE Faculty do not fit into any specific school and are

therefore assigned to a generic one. These include the Erasmus Scheme, Exchange Schemes, DHOV, UHOVI, Associate and

Institutional credit where the student is studying particular modules but not an entire course.

Data for all Welsh HEIs shows that 53.7% of students are female and 46.3% are male. This shows that there are slightly less

female students studying at USW and slightly more male students than the Welsh HEI average. ECU data shows that there has

consistently been a higher proportion of female students than male students at UK HEIs and that women were in the majority for all

non-Science Engineering and Technology subjects, with higher proportions of men in engineering and technology, computer

science and architecture, building and planning. These findings are similar to those at USW.

81% of USW students are heterosexual, 1.3% are bisexual, 0.7% are a Gay woman / Lesbian, 1.1% are a Gay man, with 1.6% declaring ‘other’.

5.4% of students did not answer the question and 9.5% refused to provide an answer.

Only 46.6% of institutions report on student data on sexual orientation. Of the 46.6% that do, UK HEI data shows that 81.8%

students left the question blank with 2.6% refusing to provide the information, 14.8% answered ‘heterosexual’, 0.3% answered

‘bisexual’, 0.2% stated ‘gay man’, 0.1% stated ‘gay woman/lesbian’ and 0.3% chose ‘other’. It is not possible to draw any

comparisons between the USW student population and that of the average HEI population across the UK due to high level of

missing data at other institutions.
