Logix or the Livestock Operational and Genetic Information Exchange is a free, Internet-based programme that affords registered breeders 24-hour access to

information relating to their dogs. This access allows the breeder to communicate with SA Stud Book in respect of animal information queries, birth notifications, cancellations, transfer of ownership, inbreeding calculations, etc.

Any breeder can significantly improve his success by utilising all the tools at his disposal to make informed decisions regarding breeding. Logix allows breeders direct access to the most recent material relating to their dogs’ breeding and performance information, as recorded on the Logix system.

Efficient decisions This information can be used to make more efficient decisions regarding the breeding of their dogs, thereby improving the management and success of the breeding enterprise. The following information can be obtained from Logix:• Participant details: Participant number,

contact information, joining date, prefix history, etc.

• Animal information: Ownership, pedigrees, progeny, championship results, photographs, inspection results, history and additional information.

• Litter information: This report can be used to view the litter from the sire and dam’s side. Also, information on the complete litter can be observed.

Logix is user-friendly and enables breeders to record litters, births and cancellations online. This entails the date of birth of a litter, the

parents of the pups, the number of male and female pups in the litter, and pups that were stillborn.

More detailed information, e.g. insufficient milk from the dam, calcium deficiency, mastitis, birth type (natural, caesarean), induction required, vaginal prolapse, infection, whether the dam died and cause of death, number of pups that died within two weeks of birth, as well as number of puppies that died after two weeks but before twelve weeks of age, and cause of death are also available. Mating dates are calculated automatically.

Validation documents such as veterinary certificates, proof of payment, mating certificates, micro-chip identification and DNA results can be uploaded onto Logix for safe-keeping. Information on individual dogs, e.g. name, sex, birthweight, eye colour, colour, mask, etc. can easily be captured on Logix. Transfers of dogs to different owners can also be done via Logix by the original owner.

Litter informationLitter information, captured by the breeder on Logix, is made available to the society where it will be approved and processed if no mistakes were found and the necessary documentation was attached.

Numerous reports are made available to the breeders via Logix, among others:• Per capita lists.• Kennel lists.• Five generation pedigrees.• Dog certificates.• Litter certificates.• Appraisal charts for capturing of linear

type (conformation) data.• Inbreeding.

Inbreeding is a serious problem, especially in small populations. An inbreeding calculator (Figure 1) is available on Logix to determine expected inbreeding of proposed matings, thus preventing undesirably high levels of inbreeding in a population.
