Author Visit We are thrilled to be hosting author Sigmund Brouwer at our school on Wednesday, October 19th. “With over four million books in print, he is a bestselling author of both children and adults books.” His recent novel, Dead Man’s Switch, is the winner of the 2015 Arthur Ellis Award for Canada’s best young adult mystery of the year and a 2015 finalist in the TD Children’s Book Awards. His current novel for grownups, Thief of Glory was selected as the 2015 Book of the Year for the American Christy Awards and is the 2015 winner of the Alberta’s Readers Choice Awards.

During Mr. Brouwer’s visit, he will present his Rock and Roll Literacy show to students in grades 3 to 8, followed by writers’ workshops for those classes. Before he comes, we are encouraged to get to know him a bit better by exploring his work online at rockandroll-literacy.com.

As a special bonus for hosting this author, students in Grades 3 to 8 and their parents are invited to attend a free presentation that evening by Mr. Brouwer and 5 other authors of prequels to Seven the Series - Eric Walters, John Wilson, Ted Staunton, Richard Scrimger and Shane Peacock. The authors will be speaking as well as selling and signing their books at Hartman Public School in Aurora at 7:00 p.m.

Cross Country (October 19) If there was ever a question of school spirit, that would have been changed if you had been given the opportunity to be at the Area Cross country meet. You could hear the cheers from our students and parents echoing throughout the entire park. The cheers were for our team members, as well as for other schools. We are so proud of our students and how well they represented Stuart Scott. It is a very dedicated group of students. They put in countless morning practices, and ran on their own time to prepare for the event. Their efforts did not go unnoticed, as they all surpassed our expectations. We have eleven students who will be representing our school at the Regional Cross country meet next week. Be sure to wish them luck! Go Stingers Go!

Parking Lot Safety If you drive your child(ren) to school please refrain from entering the parking lot in the morning. Students are to be dropped off on Lorne Ave. or Avenue Rd and cross at the crosswalk with the crossing guard.

Hallow’een Celebrations With Hallow’een around the corner, please be reminded that costumes at school may not include (but not limited to) toy guns, axes, swords, etc. (as per YRDSB policy #668). The Secret Life of Riley K Education Arts Canada, a not-for-profit organization that has been touring curriculum based productions to primary school children for the past 12 years, is pleased to be offering a new production, especially for the Junior division. The Secret Life of Riley K is the first in a series created by Juno award-winning musical writers, Judy and David Gershon, and by Canadian director and playwright, Ali Joy Richardson, and made possible with the assistance of Ontario Trillium Foundation, along with guidance from a team of mental health specialists. The Secret Life of Riley K is a brand new Mental Health Program, focusing on anxiety, and specifically created for grades 4 - 6. 12 year old Riley K, is a clever, ambitious girl who strives for a perfect life. But the prospect of giving a big speech leads to a perfect mess! She is surprised to learn that her sick stomach was not the flu, but anxiety. Riley discovers she isn’t alone with these challenges and that help is nearby. We have been given the opportunity to host the workshop version of this performance at no charge, so Education Arts Canada can get feedback from staff and students before they begin their tour in January.

The Power of One is a series of skits presented by actors who use boxes, colours, and masks to vivdly portray what bulling is, what can be done about it, and how every child has the power of one, the power to report and deal with bulling when they see it.

The Power of One:

Explains the roles in bullying: Bully, Target, and Bystander

Shows vivid examples of different types of bullying: Physical, Verbal, Exclusion, and Cyber bullying

Alerts children that Targets need help and intervention

Encourages students not to be bystanders

Emphasizes the need for individual action to make the community a safer, better place

Refers children to parents, adults, and teachers for further assistance and instruction

The set for the Power of One consists of a series of boxes that fit inside each other like a Russian egg. Each box is a different colour: green, purple, yellow, and white, representing the different roles in the bullying process.

Following the colour scheme of the boxes, the actors put on a green mask when they play the Bully, a purple mask when they play the Target, and a yellow mask for the Bystander.

The highlight of the performance is when a volunteer from the audience looks into the Power of One box (which contains a mirror) and sees himself/herself!

This leads to the audience taking the Power of One anti-bullying oath and the conclusion of the performance

What We Are Learning Monarch Butterflies emerged and were released to start their migration south! Students in the SK/1 and 1/2 class studied each chrysalis and were thrilled to watch the Monarchs fly away on October 12th. We are learning about the life cycle of Monarchs to raise awareness of their needs in our environment and to better understand seasonal changes and animal adaptations . Page 2

Extreme Weather Conditions

All students are expected to go out for every recess unless the principal decides, based on YRDSB guidelines, that weather conditions are such that it would be detrimental for students to be outdoors. We have two outdoor recesses each day, so please ensure that your child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the weather. Recess breaks may be shortened or students may be kept in depending on the conditions.

Parents sometimes request that their children be kept indoors during recess times because they are not feeling well. If your child(ren) is not well enough to participate in recess or other physical activities they should remain at home until their condition improves.

Remember schools will remain open (unless otherwise specified) even if the buses are cancelled. Prevent Infection by Washing Your Hands!!!!!!! It is that time of year when many children are getting ill with vague symptoms such as fever, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea. If your child becomes ill with these symptoms, please keep them home from school until they have recovered. If the symptoms persist, please consult your family physician. Please remember that hand washing is the single most important procedure for preventing infections.

Recommendations of Hand Washing:

Hands must be washed using soap and water.

Before preparing, handling, serving or eating food.

When hands are visibly dirty

After personal body functions, such as using the toilet or blowing one’s nose

For parents, after changing diapers or cleaning up vomit.

Healthy Hunger Stuart Scott has asked that you register with healthy hunger at www.healthyhunger.ca for the lunch program.

After you register, you will be able to view your child's up-coming hot lunch dates. You are able to place your orders for 1 or multiple Hot Lunches. You pay for your orders using Visa, MasterCard, or Interact Online.

It was such a success last year that the Grade 8 class is organizing a bottle drive again this year, as a fundraiser to put toward their graduation. We are asking for your help with collecting any wine, beer or other returnable bottles.

The Grade 8’s will be collecting on Saturday, Nov. 5th from 10-12 am and Thursday, January 12th from 6-8 pm in the school parking lot. Please ask your friends, family and neighbors to join in.

It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community. It’s a good time for parents to remind children about personal safety.

Here's what children need to know:

Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province. This can be done through rhyme or song.

How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers.

How and under what circumstances to call 911.

To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle. A responsible adult would never ask a child for directions or any other question for that matter.

Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking them to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable. Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults.

To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's permission.

If home alone, never admit it when answering the phone. Never answer a knock at the door or speak through it. Adults can be very persuasive. Teach your child to call you if there is a knock at the door and if they fear for their safety, teach them to call 911. Make sure they know that police officers are there to help them and would not get mad if it were a false alarm.

If they think they are being followed or are in danger they should run home or to a public place. If someone grabs them, they should try to get away, yelling and screaming while doing so.

It is important to play in safe areas, never take shortcuts and stick with a buddy whenever possible.

It is never too early or too late to teach children the importance of personal safety. Common sense, communication and consistency are the keys. Remind children to alert a responsible adult if something strange happens that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's responsibility.
