Everyday Stewardship There are times in our lives that we get the chance to see a glimpse of heaven. It may be through the love of another, loved one or stranger. Sometimes it may even be an event that seems unexplainable, perhaps even supernatural. These occurrences may be the answer to prayer or they may surprise us by coming out of nowhere. But no matter their nature or origin, they give us hope and strength to carry on through life. When we journey on a pathway of stewardship, we are bound to experience moments of grace where we see even the smallest seeds we planted grow into something amazing. At these moments, we are reminded that God is real and that our stewardship is not in vain. The giving of our gifts and talents is not just a response to God's calling. The giv-ing is one way that God breaks through into the lives of others. As we use what God has given us for his glory, he uses us as instruments of grace to be truly present to others. The greatest example of this occurs at the Mass. Through the hands of an ordained priest taking the gifts of bread and wine, God is really present with us. When we then take Christ into our bodies, we accept the offer to take him into the world to others. The world cannot see Jesus in us with human eyes, but through our works of stewardship, they can see Jesus in us. One could say they even have a chance to see a glimpse of heaven. Readings for August 2nd 1st Reading – Isaiah 55:1-3 1 Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! 2 Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. 3 Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 145:8-9, 15-16, 17-18 R. (cf. 16) The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. 8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. 15 The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season; 16 you open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs. 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. R. The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.

2nd Reading – Romans 8:35, 37-39 Brothers and sisters: 35 What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? 37 No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia: CF. Matthew 4:4B R. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 4B One does not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. R. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel – Matthew 14:13-21 13 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. 14 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food your-selves.” 17 But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” 18 Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” 19 and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over twelve wicker baskets full. 21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel Meditation—18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Many people in our world are hungry and thirsty. This hunger and thirst go well beyond physical needs for food, security, and shel-ter. Many are emotionally and spiritually parched, too. Behind every act of violence is a soul who hungers. People live with rela-tionships that actually starve them. They are abused, exploited, disrespected, laughed at, and marginalized. There is a lot of con-fusion and inner pain that needs to be acknowledged and ex-pressed. We all long to be understood and loved, even when our inner demons or who I am make it difficult to be. Do you live with inner confusion and pain? Folks often wander through life without any real direction or purpose and take their cues from what seems satisfying or popular at the moment. The deeper dots of our lives can easily remain unconnected, and we can find our-selves without grounding, purpose, or real happiness. Life be-comes shallow and without real purpose as we hunger and thirst for an ultimate love. It’s easier to see the physical hungers and thirsts. We try to re-spond to these as best we can. Much more needs to be done. With all that God’s earth can provide, nobody ought to face sleep at night with a belly that’s empty. It’s sinful. It’s unjust. But isn’t all hunger unjust? It doesn’t need to be, and it should not be. Just as no one ought to be physically hungry and thirsty, there is really no need to be emotionally or spiritually deficient either. If we have more privileges at our fingertips, it is easier to try to satisfy our emotional and spiritual hungers and thirst by acting on impulse or self-indulgence, carelessly following passions, or by seeking self-destructive ways to dull the ache of emptiness. Folks need to know where to look for nourishment and need the right friends to help them find it. We may not think that we have enough to respond to and to satisfy all of the needs, but we do. It doesn’t take much. Five loaves and two fish provided for a huge crowd. With God, all things are possible. Our faith provides the direction for where God’s children must go to find the nourish-ment they seek. It also tells us how to structure life so that justice and equity can be a reality for all. It also tells us how to respond to pain, sinfulness, and confusion. Come to the water and then help another get there. ©LPI

Families and the Gospel August 2, 2020: Eighteenth Sunday (MT 14:13-21) The apostles were just being practical when they asked Jesus to “dismiss the crowds to go buy food.” Jesus knew there is always enough when we place our trust in the Father, even with just (FIVE) 5 loaves and fishes. Trust is the bridge to miracles.

Family Ritual The family is the “domestic Church.” What does that mean? It means that your own family is a little Church. And as Church, your family is meant to be a light of the Gospel to the world. What are some ways we can live this calling? Pray as a family every day – more than just at meals, but have some time in the morning or in the evening where you pray together. Practice hospitality – Be welcoming and inviting to friends, neighbors and strangers. Even in the pandemic, we can find ways to be welcoming while continuing to prac-tice social distancing. Serve together – A beautiful way to live our calling as do-mestic Church is to engage in service projects together. Planting a garden to donate to your local soup kitchen is a great way to do this when you cannot serve outside the home. Andre McCarville Family Life & Missions Office, Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown
