values: max. > 18000 x 10-8m3kg -1 for metallurgical dusts and 2 500 x 10-8m3kg 1 for f ly ashes.
Th ese values point at a considerable am ount o f ferrimagnetic iron ox ides in the industrial dusts. Themagnetic low field susceptibil ity in 1 50 0 soil samples from U ppe r Silesia increases distinctly in the
topsoils (mostly subhorizons O f and Oh ). This effect has been observed especially nea r the gre atindustrial plants (Strzyszcz e t aL, 1994) . There is also evidence o f a close direct co rrelation betweenmagnetic susceptibil ity o f soils and concentration o f som e heav y metals.
Th e purpose o f present work is to investigate the m agnetic particles in the industrial d usts andashes and in the topsoils of industrial areas, where these particles cause an artificial increase ofmagnetic susceptibil i ty. The former field observations by S t r zy s zc z ( 1988 ,1989a , 1989b ,1991 ) ,S t r z y s z c z a n d M a g i e r a ( 1 9 9 3 ) and S t r zy s zc z e t aL ( 1994) will be supplemented by laboratorycharacterization o f the ferromagn etic mineralogy.
