Client: St. John’s University • Architect: Martin A. DeSapio Architects • Square Footage: 13,400St. Thomas More Church is located on the main campus of St. John’s University in Queens, New York. A campus church had been a dream of the St. John’s community since its inception over a century ago. The new building includes a 500-seat sanctuary and campus ministry offices. SAE provided mechanical, electrical, and lighting systems designs that integrated seamlessly with the aesthetic qualities of the structure and complemented the interior design features. Special considerations included acoustical analysis and airborne noise treatments.

Won “Commendation for Corporate Commitment to Historic Preservation Award” from Preservation New Jersey

The campus of this pharmaceutical research company included a historic carriage barn which was restored, renovated and expanded into a corporate conference center. The original aesthetics of the structure were maintained, however, the interior was totally redone to a state-of-the-art conference center which includes a main conference center with movable partitions, plus several smaller breakout rooms and a large catering kitchen. In order to maintain the historical qualities of the building the HVAC heat pump systems were specially designed to fit within tight spaces and to be unobtrusive. The electrical design included various types of lighting systems to support teleconferencing and to provide flexibility and dimming via preset control stations. The work also included an upgraded electric service, fire alarm, sprinkler and telecommunication systems.

“Strunk-Albert Engineering began working with Simone Collins on our site design and parks projects, and when time came to gut an old warehouse to create our new green office building, we knew

we wanted SAE on our design team. From the initial concept, SAE understood the physical challenges of our unique building and recommended savvy solutions for construction techniques and insulation systems that set the basis for our successes in building performance and cost savings from energy conservation measures. SAE staff is highly skilled technically and were a pleasure to collaborate with professionally through the entire process. SAE design documentation sailed through review and bidding, and the SAE staff faithfully represented SC through the inevitable changes that occur during a rehabilitation project. Our Energy Star™ rating after a year of operation was measured at 46 percent lower than a typical building. David Strunk is a gentleman and a person you want to meet.”

“Having worked with SAE since their formation as a company I can confidently say they are a loyal

and honest firm with resourceful

solutions to difficult problems. They

are consistent in their high quality of craftsmanship and attention to customer service. It has been a pleasure to work with them over the years.”

James Shearouse East Stroudsburg Area School District

“SAE has a higher standard of excellence than most in the industry today. Their commitment to detail and prompt response makes SAE the firm we think of for

all of our engineering projects.”

Since 1990 we have provided superior engineering services to our

clients and that’s why...

“Our company used SAE to obtain an estimate of a large scale. I must say they were professional, timely and straightforward with all information. Not being familiar with the HVAC components being studied, I was able to fully comprehend all aspects of the situation and was able to distinguish between pressing issues and those that could be handled at a later date. David Strunk did an excellent job of translating the technical aspects of the project into terms that my associates and I could better understand in order to make the informed decisions that were needed to contribute to the further success of our company. We are looking forward to working with SAE on future projects.”

Lisa D. Green The Inn at Pocono Manor

“SAE will always go the extra mile for us. When dealing with the unique and challenging field of photovoltaic

design, SAE always takes the extra time to be sure we have found the most cost effective solutions.. They allow me to develop a project budget, and construct a project with few issues. When we have a complex and challenging project, we would not call anyone else to help us develop it.”

Matthew JaustEast Coast Alternative Energy

“Traditionally, the relationship between engineers and contractors in publically bid jobs is adversarial. SAE is the exception to this rule, as they provide the contractor with timely decision and careful attention to detail.”

The Visitor Activity Center was designed to meet the Client’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The Center functions as a gather-ing space for dining, meetings, lectures and other environmental learning activities. The building was designed to take advantage of beautiful views of the natural world and to enhance winter solar gain. SAE designed the MEP systems to complement the open character of the structure. The heating system consists of a radiant floor system that provides occupant comfort allowing for lower space temperature and is invisible. The building utilizes natural ventilation instead of air conditioning to minimize energy use. The flexible lighting system design promotes zoned control to supplement the available day light from the large fenestration areas.
