READING WEEK

Stop… drop and READ! One of my personal favourites was of course talking about your favourite book. This gave all the students the opportunity to talk about their favourite book and whether this is different to their favourite character and this also have the students to talk about a book that they weren’t reading as we all know we may pick up a book and hate it but we try and force ourselves through it because we believe it must get better! But it also gave us the chance to see the range of different genres and authors along with the different types of texts you can read such as comics and novels.

Dudley Teen Book Awards This year authors; Peter Bunzl, Stewart Foster, Ally Sherrick and Jane Elson spoke at the ceremony and answered questions about their shortlisted books. The result was really close, but the winner of this year’s Award was…Peter Bunzl’s Cogheart. He seemed surprised to win! After the ceremony, we had squash and cookies, and you could buy books from the Waterstones stand, and then get them signed by the authors, which was really fun, to be able to meet them and talk to them. We had a great time.

Ch Ch Ch Ch Changes An interview with Miss Knott about the changes in the music industry…

My parents always played music in the house when my little sister and I were children. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, a bit of Cliff Richard (sorry Mom!) and Paul Simon are the ones I remember most of all. Although I didn’t own many,

I can remember the sound a vinyl record makes before the music starts to play; that warm crackle and the anticipation before the song kicked in. I also remember the absolute fear I’d feel when dropping that record player needle; holding my breath in hope that it would safely find the groove and wouldn’t shoot across the entire surface and scratch a horrible gash into the record, ruining it forever! It’s lovely to me that they are now in coming back into shops and back into people’s lives.

On my seventh birthday I was given a Walkman. Along with it came ‘Now That’s What I call Music 5’, a double tape of current (in 1984) chart hits.

A couple of years later I was given, at Christmas, a stereo with a double tape deck. I did tape an awful lot of the music I listened to in my teens from the radio. Trying to guess, finger poised over the pause button listening to Radio 1’s Sunday Top 40 chart, when the DJ was going to cut in and talk over the end of a song. If I did want to legally buy music at this time, I had to go out and physically get it. One of my favourite memories is of getting up on the first Monday of a half term ridiculously excited that the new Oasis album was in shops. I remember the buzz I felt sitting on the bus to West Bromwich to go and get my copy from ‘Our

Price’ or it may have been ‘Woolworths’. Making an effort to go and get the music you loved is something I feel a little sad to have lost.

Going to see bands was the obvious natural progression. Sharing music with so many thousands of people in a field in the middle of nowhere is an incredibly special thing, almost spiritual in the way you’re experiencing that moment together; singing together with friends and happy to be there.

Nowadays I listen to most of the music I love through Spotify (other streaming providers are available!) When I started using it a couple of years ago, it changed my life. I love the fact that pretty much any song in the history of music is in my pocket at all times and only ever really a fingertip away. I love having instant access to an artist’s brand new music immediately that they release it. I love making and sharing playlists and that I can find new artists and uncover hidden gems I never knew about. If I’d told my teenage self that in the future, every song she loved would be available on a phone, that can be plugged in pretty much everywhere, it would have blown her tiny mind! But there are things I miss too. I miss having physical objects that represent the artists I love their tape or CD. I miss reading sleeve notes and staring endlessly at striking album artwork. I miss making mixtapes for people I care about and having people take the time to make one for me.

A Spotify playlist is nice and all, but nothing said ‘I love you’ like a beautifully chosen mixtape! Music will always change, so will the way we use it and experience it. But the memories we make from certain songs never will.

Entertainment

Over time music and the different ways we listen to it has changed. Music is an important part in many people’s lives and can be very special to people. Many people’s music tastes have been influenced by their parents playing music around the house or from other close relatives. Music plays a significant role in many people’s lives and is now a part of everyday life for most.

Music is important as it can bring people together. An artist and their music can bring people from all around the world together with a single song, this shows how powerful and important music can be. Music can link people from different parts of the world, with different lifestyles together as they have their love of music in common. Music has a very impactful role on so many people.

Over time people have created different ways to listen to music. From vinyl to streaming music on Spotify there are hundreds of ways to listen to music. Most of the common ways to listen to music are listening to the radio, streaming the music on apps or downloading it straight to your phone. This has changed from listening to music from record players and Walkman’s and from the times you had to go out to buy the music in

order to listen to it. Now people can download music straight to their phones.

The power of music is very important. Music is a part of people’s lives in some sort of way and is something that we hear or listen to everyday. For some people music can be an escape or a way to have fun. Music can bring back memories, good and bad, but it will always remind you of good things and people you love. Over time we can see how music has become so much more important and significant in everyday lives. We see how people bond over music and how many people use different ways to listen to music. While time changes so will music but the memories and good times from a certain song we won’t ever forget.

“Don’t give up on your dreams.”

Ed Sheeran is one of the most

successful people on the planet. Although, this has been no easy road for him. He dropped out of education at 16, lived on the streets and played at many empty gigs for years. While success at school wasn’t on the cards for him, he realised that success can come within a much wider spectrum than your GCSE grades. Hard work has to continue into every aspect of your life. What are you passionate about that you can commit your life to?

Revision Tips Revising for tests and exams can be very uninteresting and tedious but it is important as everyone wants to do well in exams. Here are some revision tips and new ways to revise that you might enjoy better than reading through revision guides all day and they will make you become more motivated to revise.

Whilst we’re certain that you’ve all had some experience at revising in the past, it’s important to remember that some techniques are better than others. For example, there’s only so much you can learn from making pretty posters. Most of the time it is a lot more useful to spend time doing practise questions so that you can get the experience of seeing where you’re most likely to make mistakes.

Make a change this revision season and remember our motto:

If you aren’t hitting your target grades, whatever you have been doing isn’t quite enough. Make the change now to help you to make that last bit of progress.

Useful Revision Websites… http://www.bbc.co.uk/education There are a whole range of resources on here for all of your subjects. https://www.youtube.com/ Try searching for some topics. People make all sorts of videos to show you how to write top level responses. Search for Primrose Kitten (Science and Maths) and Mr Bruff (English) https://uk.pinterest.com/ Make an account (you can use your facebook) and search for innovative approaches towards topics! https://www.goconqr.com/en/gcse/revision-tips/ Really useful up-to-date exam advice.

Search for a whole range of different apps on your phone. Revising just before bed or on the bus on the way into your exam can be really effective.

1. The Study Star – This method is a good way to put a lot of complex notes into one place. It is easy to carry around and this can help you to remember big chunks of information.

2. Making rhymes – Rhymes are easier to

remember than normal text. For example if you need to remember the year Columbus sailed you can say ‘in fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

3. Post it notes – Testing yourself to remember

information is one of the best revision techniques. Using post it notes to cover up answers and then moving them to reveal the answers can help the information to stay in your head.

4. Foldable revision – This is a good way to test

yourself on things such as chemical symbols, definitions, keywords and other languages. You can use this to revise anywhere and it is useful as it can test your memory.

5. Reading/Remembering – This is a good way to

revise small bits of information. Use highlighters to help you remember the key information and only write enough for your hand to cover and remember what you said and read it out loud or to someone until you remember it.

6. Another revision method is to think about what

the question is asking you and think like an examiner. Look at your revision notes and think off all the questions that could be asked in order to get that answer. It’ll help because you’ll learn a range of techniques on how to answer different questions.

Student Council

The Student Council launched at the start of January and have been working hard to gain insight from the student body. Their weekly meetings discuss College issues and raises opinions and suggestions of their peers. This half term, their focus has been learned and wise relating to the canteen food. Student Council met with Lynda Brown, District Catering Manager, and Trudy Falato, Catering Manager, to discuss student views on variety and healthy options on offer. Student Council made their suggestions, which have been taken on board and will be trialled over the coming weeks, as part of the weekly menu. They are continuing their work with the canteen over the coming weeks. Keep watch on the next parental newsletter for an update.

Welfare Exam season can be stressful. Don’t let things get on top of you. Follow this advice and remain in control.

Keep your room tidy, not only will it keep people from nagging you, but you’re less likely to lose work and it’s also proven to help keep your mind clear too!

Regular exercise can help people cope with stress. 10 or 20 minutes a day spent walking, cycling, running or at the gym can make a big difference. Go with friends so that it can be more fun!

Eat well. Don’t skip breakfast, drink lots of water and try to eat only whole foods (fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid fast food).

Clubs and Trips

Dance XCHANGE The first day of the trip, we attended the workshop at Dance XCHANGE. We got to work with the choreographer of the dance and a dancer performing in the show. He explained the style of the dance was a combination of African dance and contemporary. We were first taught the warm up exercise which was surprisingly difficult! After we did this, we moved onto working on the set phrase. It was very fast paced and took inspiration from soldiers, the moves were different to anything I’d done before which made it more interesting.

The second day of the trip we had a chance to watch the show, we learnt a short section of the dance from it the previous day. The story was “Carmen”, a classical story but in this case it had an African twist. It was about the story of a woman who falls in love with a soldier and a boxer, the two then fight to the death and she eventually commits suicide out of heartbreak. The dancers were very skilled and they portrayed the story well. – Tia Blackwood, B3.

The Student Chaplaincy Team The Chaplaincy team provides a wide range of

opportunities starting from morning worship for students, assemblies, fund raising events, in- school retreats, competitions such as faith based posters & debates, John Paul II Award to primary school links. Students are encouraged to engage with their faith through acts of individual worship such as visits to the chapel during the 40 day lent period and collective worship such as whole school Mass and Reconciliation Service. The Chaplaincy team meets regularly every Thursday morning at 8.30 am in the chapel to pray, to discuss ideas from the chaplaincy prefects in order to foster the Catholic faith and ethos among the younger generation. The Chaplaincy team also encourages every student to follow the teaching of St. John Bosco, the patron saint of the John Bosco Academy to become a saint by doing ordinary duties in an extraordinary manner.

For further information please speak with our Lay Chaplain Ms.S.Cherian.

Reading Ambassador Visits We have visited St. Chad’s Catholic Primary School and St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School as part of our ongoing connections with our MAC schools. The aim was to teach PQA paragraphs in order to prepare them for English at Bishop Milner. Students were keen and enthusiastic to succeed. They participated in a range of different activities: This was a fabulous experience and felt like we were a part of a family when we were learning. When we had finished we had a great sense of achievement. This is a start for many initiatives that we hope to share with many pupils in the ‘Reading Ambassador’ scheme’s future.
