ABOUT THE COVER: Thousands of Americans joined the fun this year in a National Trust National Treasure campaign to protect the irrepressible spirit of Route 66 and all its quirky attractions, such as this public art in El Reno, Oklahoma.

WITH THIS YEAR’S ANNUAL REPORT, we celebrate all of you—the friends, supporters, and champions of America’s cultural heritage, whose leadership, passion, and generosity made possible the successful completion of the Campaign for America’s National Treasures, the largest campaign in National Trust history. The campaign launched in 2012 and ended in 2018 having received gifts totaling a remarkable $311 million—thank you! These gifts have been put to work to save historic places including: • $21 million in capital restoration projects at National Trust Historic Sites, while

also advancing new visions and business plans to make our sites more relevant to Americans and more financially sustainable.

• 100 National Treasure campaigns in 39 states and Puerto Rico, where we took direct action to save places that matter, from the Houston Astrodome and Washington DC’s Union Station to ancient petroglyphs in Utah.

• Successful legislative campaigns that saved the federal historic tax credit, secured the largest level of historic preservation funding in history, and protected African American historic places.

Inspired by the hopeful vision of a future where all people see their stories in the places that surround them and spend their lives rooted in the places they love, we do this work with you.

As you will see from the pages that follow, this outpouring of support makes the National Trust stronger, our communities richer, and our nation more united.

Together, we are saving the past to enrich the future. Our most heartfelt thanks for your support.

“The National Trust is a proven partner, and we are confident in their ability to join with The Huntington to maintain and sustain our historic home and gardens for the long term.”

CHUCK AND GENEVA THORNTON

America’s historic places are irreplaceable. They celebrate our triumphs and soothe the wounds we are still working to heal. The National Trust’s portfolio of 28 Historic Sites includes a remarkable collection of presidential homes, world-class landscapes, and architectural masterworks tracing more than 2,000 years of North American history. Through the campaign, gifts to National Trust Historic Sites exceeded $100 million including the exceptional gift of Thornton Gardens from Chuck and Geneva Thornton. These places provide insight and inspiration to nearly 1 million visitors every year, while also fostering creative collaborations with artists-in-residence, innovators, scholars, and entrepreneurs.

CHESTERWOOD OPENS NEW GALLERY

This year we celebrated the opening of the new gallery at Chesterwood, Daniel Chester French’s home and studio in the Berkshires. Lead funding from the Henry Luce Foundation made possible the climate-controlled space and enabled us to bring more than 150 works—including models, maquettes, paintings, and sculptures—out of storage to illustrate the renowned sculptor’s creative process. The gallery is central to a comprehensive reimagining of Chesterwood as an artists’ retreat and economic engine for the Berkshires’ creative economy. Strong support from Luce, as well as the Mass Cultural Council, Town of Stockbridge, Nancy Woodson Spire Foundation, and Fitzpatrick Foundation enabled restoration of the studio and exterior of the home, and work on the interior continues. Chesterwood is the headquarters

Chuck and Geneva ThorntonChuck and Geneva Thornton led the way in the Campaign through the pace-setting gift this year of Thornton Gardens, their stunning Tudor Revival home and gardens, along with a substantial endowment to provide for its long-term protection. Designed by Myron Hunt, the visionary behind the Rose Bowl and the Huntington Library, Thornton Gardens is the first new National Trust Historic Site in a decade, and the only one representing the unique style and spirit of Southern California in the early 20th century. The mansion and 10 acres of gardens, designed by the renowned team of Florence Yoch and Lucille Council, have been lovingly maintained by the Thorntons, who will continue to reside at the estate during their lifetimes, after which the National Trust will co-steward the property with the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.

EXPANDING ACCESS TO COLLECTIONS

Momentum continued to build this year around greater public access to the National Trust’s extraordinary collection of more than 60,000 historic objects and works of art. Funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Henry Luce Foundation, and others helped to conserve and document the collections, which will soon be cataloged online for the first time through a new collections management database. This new platform frees the collections from their physical locations, so that artists no longer need to travel to the Berkshires to study Daniel Chester French’s models for a seated Lincoln or experience the exquisite beauty of more than 50 pieces of fine furniture for Lyndhurst designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis. This fall, a public fellow began curating original content for the database to advance scholarship and model innovative approaches to engagement for other historic sites and collections nationwide.

COMMERCE AND CULTURE IN MONTEREY

A celebratory ribbon-cutting this fall marked the reopening of Cooper-Molera Adobe, a National Trust Historic Site returned to its roots as a commercial anchor for a revitalized Monterey, California, thanks to a combination of adaptive reuse and continued public interpretation. The bold reimagining continues museum operations in the Mexican-American adobe residences, while introducing a new restaurant and a bakery in a historic warehouse and former corner store. Seismic reinforcements made it possible to create the new Barns at Cooper-Molera event space in a large redwood barn complex, and the property’s beautiful gardens and grounds—one of the best kept secrets in Monterey—have been expanded and reopened.

INSPIRING UNDERSTANDING THROUGH THE ARTS

Thanks to leadership funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The JPB

Foundation through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, artists are using music to deepen understanding at National Trust Historic Sites nationwide. As the artist-in-residence at Woodrow Wilson House, jazz saxophonist Davey Yarborough explored the music of the early 20th century as a response to President Wilson’s racial policies. In New Iberia, Louisiana, The Shadows staged an original “blues poem” by playwright Ifa Bayeza exploring the life of influential early jazz trumpeter

Bunk Johnson, who worked on the property until his death.

And with the addition of a new musical score, Cliveden’s unique production, Liberty to Go to See, brings to life the stories of the enslaved, indentured, and immigrant workers who lived and labored at this Philadelphia-area house through the Colonial Period, American Revolution, and the early 19th century.

At National Trust Historic Sites, we’ve also leveraged support from prominent arts-focused funders like the National Endowment for the Arts, to bring the rich histories of these places to life in new ways. This summer, NEA grants supported dynamic, community-based art installations that invigorated the Gaylord Building and downtown Lockport, Illinois with new interpretations of the town’s industrial heritage and an innovative multi-media exhibition by Jennie Jones that initiated our artist residency program at Philip Johnson’s Glass House.

PHYLICIA RASHAD, CO-CHAIR AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL HERITAGE ACTION FUND

America is stronger when all its citizens can see their stories in the places that surround us. Inspired by this vision, millions of Americans came together during the Campaign to take direct action to save historic places through 100 National Treasure campaigns. These hands-on efforts leveraged more than $563 million in public and private funding and created a brighter future for some of our nation’s most treasured places. From the ancient petroglyphs of Utah’s Bears Ears to the modern marvel of the Houston Astrodome, National Treasures are telling a fuller American story and reminding us all of the inspiration inherent in the history we know and the stories we have yet to discover.

Rosenwald Schools were beacons of hope and opportunity for a generation of African American students in the rural South early in the 20th century. Philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and influential African American educator Booker T. Washington established the schools, and this year Rosenwald’s granddaughter Alice stepped forward with a $500,000 challenge grant, through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, to preserve the schools and their powerful legacy of courage, aspiration, and achievement.

PRESERVING AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY

Led by the Ford Foundation, The JPB Foundation, and the Open Society Foundations, this year the nation’s foundation leaders stepped forward to join the National Trust in launching the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, America’s largest-ever campaign to protect African American history and stories in the places where they happened. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Alice Rosenwald Foundation, Pepsico, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation joined these and other lead funders in contributing $6 million in just a few months to launch this $25 million effort.

Since the Action Fund’s launch last year, four new African American National Treasures have launched, including Chicago’s South Side Community Art Center, Memphis’ Clayborn Temple, the childhood home of Nina Simone in North Carolina, and the John and Alice Coltrane House in New York. The Action Fund also provided $1.1 million in grant funds

Ford FoundationThis year, the Ford Foundation stepped forward with the National Trust to launch the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a $25 million campaign to uncover and celebrate stories of African American activism, achievement, and community. Early Foundation support of $1.5 million, combined with the vision of Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, who co-chairs the Action Fund Advisory Council with acclaimed actor and director Phylicia Rashad, has propelled the campaign forward. The National Trust was honored to present the Ford Foundation and Darren Walker with the 2018 Robert W. Wilson Preservation Philanthropist of the Year award, in recognition of their impact. We thank the Ford Foundation for stepping forward with a renewed pledge of $1 million to continue the Action Fund’s momentum in 2019.

WEATHERING THE STORM TOGETHER

With you, the National Trust stepped forward after this year’s devastating hurricanes to help storm-damaged communities in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico rebuild and recover. The organization provided $25,000 in emergency funding to help Puerto Rican partner Para La Naturaleza survey more than 4,880 historic

buildings immediately following the storm, gathering data which not only directed the recovery effort but also helped the National Trust advocate successfully for $50 million in funding through the Historic Preservation Fund—a $32.5 million increase over the amount initially proposed by the Trump Administration—to help with recovery of historic places. American Express provided $450,000 in grants to preservation organizations in Houston, Miami, and Puerto Rico to restore places like Houston’s LULAC Council 60 Clubhouse, a National Trust National Treasure, and Puerto Rico’s Paraíso de Las Lunas. Through a crowdfunding campaign on SavingPlaces.org, the National Trust raised funds to send 200 tarps to cover historic buildings in Puerto Rico until permanent repairs can be made.

SAVING SCENIC LANDSCAPES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

Miles of family farms, historic sites, and the scenic, rural character of New Hampshire are more secure this year, thanks to ongoing legal advocacy made possible by leadership support from donors championing

the National Trust’s commitment to preserving cultural landscapes in peril. Through more than seven years of review and deliberations, the National Trust has raised strenuous objections to the proposed Northern Pass transmission line, which would cut through the entire state. This work paid off in February, when New Hampshire’s Site Evaluation Committee voted unanimously to deny a crucial construction permit citing concerns that the project would harm the economy of towns along the route. Northern Pass officials intend to appeal, but for now, the project is halted. The National Trust will continue fighting to preserve New England’s beauty and history, along with nearly

a dozen other cultural landscapes nationwide.

CHAMPIONING AMERICA’S BEST IDEA

National Trust donors and advocates made possible major progress this year in a campaign for dedicated federal funding to address the staggering $11.6 billion deferred maintenance backlog on America’s National Parks, roughly half of which is attributed to historic assets. A national education and advocacy campaign undertaken with Pew Charitable Trusts and the National Parks Conservation Association generated a groundswell of support through more than 50 op-eds and letters to the editor, as well as reports, media appearances, and sign-on letters uniting the voices of more than 1,500 preservation, Main Street, and Civil War battlefield advocates. Restore Our Parks legislation has strong bipartisan support in both houses of Congress. National Trust advocacy has secured an additional $100 million over the past three years toward the maintenance backlog through the regular appropriations process, and Hands-On Preservation Experience (HOPE) Crews have completed more than 165 projects to date totaling $18 million in preservation work on public lands nationwide. Americans today want more than places to live—they want to spend their lives rooted in towns and communities they love. Historic places are central to such neighborhoods. Your support through the Campaign is helping city leaders see the value in their older buildings and find new ways to solve problems, spur economic growth, and create the beautiful, sustainable, character-rich communities we want for ourselves and our children. With your support, the National Trust is creating new research that makes the case for rehab and reuse, and promoting policies, tools, and funding sources that make restoration easier and more affordable. Together, we are building a brighter future on the best of our nation’s past—to make life better for millions of Americans.

REURBANISM

reuse, reinvestment, and revitalization

Federal historic tax credits have helped to restore Schmidt Artist Lofts in St. Paul, Minnesota and more than 43,000 other buildings, creating nearly 2.5 million jobs, and reinvesting more than $144 billion in private capital since President Reagan launched the federal historic tax credit more than 30 years ago. The program fosters a renewed sense of civic pride by channeling Americans’ tax dollars back into our communities.

PRESERVING THE FEDERAL HISTORIC TAX CREDIT

Years of determined advocacy led by the National Trust and its for-profit subsidiary, the National Trust Community Investment Corporation, paid off in December, when Congress voted to retain the federal historic tax credit amidst the most sweeping tax reform in three decades.

A strong, bipartisan show of support and crucial leadership from National Trust Trustees Larry Curtis, Christy Brown, and Linda Bruckheimer, as well as former Trustee and First Lady Laura Bush, saved the credit, speaking to the impact of an educational campaign that reached over 3.5 million people through social media and prompted more than 40,000 letters to Congress. During the crucial negotiation window this fall, the National Trust posted a video of President Ronald Reagan advocating for historic tax credit legislation in 1981, which was viewed more than half a million times in just six weeks.

American ExpressAs the National Trust’s premier corporate partner, American Express has invested more than $24 million to save historic places nationwide. Direct grants and programmatic support have helped to launch the National Treasures program and supported a remarkable range of restoration projects, from re-gilding the ceiling at Washington, DC’s Union Station to restoring San Francisco’s Haas-Lilienthal House. This year, the company provided $450,000 in the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria to help communities in Houston, Miami, and Puerto Rico recover and rebuild beloved historic places. The latest round of American Express Partners in Preservation grants, which bring preservation home to people by enabling them to vote for places they love nationwide, distributed $2 million in funding. This year’s campaign supported the work of 20 Main Street partners around the country and restored historic places celebrating diversity on 11 winning Main Streets nationwide.

To date, historic tax credits have restored a remarkable 43,000 buildings, created more than 2.5 million jobs, reinvested more than $144 billion in private capital, and fostered a renewed sense of pride in neighborhoods nationwide.

PRESERVING CHARACTER, PROPELLING GROWTH

This year, innovative policy reforms driven by the National Trust positioned five American cities to unlock the potential of their historic places and promote inclusive, sustainable growth. The National Trust’s 30 years of expertise in downtown revitalization helped set Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood, where the Martin Luther King, Jr. historical park is located, on a course for greater prosperity through a National Treasure campaign completed this year with leadership from Trustee Emerita Mtaminika Youngblood and Trustee Sheffield Hale.

In Nashville’s Music Row, Miami’s Little Havana, and Philadelphia’s historic neighborhoods, civic leaders joined forces with the National Trust

to begin developing new policies and funding tools that make it easier for these great American cities to accommodate booming growth without sacrificing historic character. In Miami, for instance, the National Trust identified more than 4.6 million square feet of buildable land and 95,000 square feet of usable building space in the city’s vacant lots and empty buildings.

These efforts build on the lessons learned in Louisville, Kentucky, the National Trust’s first citywide National Treasure, where the National Trust, city planners, and elected officials are creating a regulatory framework that capitalizes on the city’s authentic character as an engine of health and vibrancy.

CREATING CITIES THAT WORK FOR EVERYONE

This spring, the National Trust’s Research and Policy Lab launched a new research agenda through the African American Cultural

Heritage Action Fund to advance our understanding of preservation’s impact in historic African American neighborhoods on issues relating to equity, affordability, displacement, and reinvestment. Working with leading scholars from institutions such as U.C. Berkeley and Columbia University, Research and Policy Lab staff are gathering and analyzing data from 10 cities nationwide. In addition, a group of 10 graduate Research Fellows were selected from a pool of 135 applicants to conduct qualitative research and deepen our understanding of neighborhood change in each of the 10 cities. Research findings will be released in Spring 2019 and will help

to shape public policy and practice to promote inclusive, just, and economically vibrant communities.

NATIONAL MAIN STREET CENTER LAUNCHES URBANMAIN

Older and historic commercial corridors from Chicago to Salt Lake City to Charlotte found new vibrancy this year by teaming up with the National Trust’s nonprofit subsidiary, the National Main Street Center, in a program geared toward under-resourced commercial districts in larger cities. UrbanMain builds on Main Street’s nearly 40 years of expertise in placemaking and downtown revitalization to provide customized strategic services, capacity building, leadership development, and networking. In Chicago’s Bronzeville and Washington Park neighborhoods, for instance, the program is working with local community development groups to expand retail activity and preserve historic resources, thanks to lead funding from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and Groupon.

American Express provided a total of $4 million through the popular Partners in Preservation program in 2017 and 2018 to help revitalize Main Streets nationwide, including this one in Franklin, Tennessee.

The National Trust extends its most heartfelt thanks to all the friends and supporters who stepped forward to help raise $311 million from 2012 to 2018 to save the places that shape our American experience.

Led by Honorary Chair Mrs. Laura Bush, campaign chairs Lester “Ruff ” Fant III and Kenneth Woodcock, and Vice-Chair Charles Royce, the Campaign brought together an extraordinary community of champions. Chuck and Geneva Thornton led the way with their pace-setting gift of Thornton Gardens and a $35 million endowment for its long-term care. The Robert W. Wilson Charitable Trust and the late Bob Wilson launched the Campaign with a $10 million challenge and continue to help us move forward with an additional $3 million in challenge funding to spur giving from younger donors and build the ranks of supporters at the $1,000 to $50,000 level. American Express stepped forward with more than $15 million for the Partners in Preservation program alone, and the Lilly Endowment, Inc. provided $11 million to launch the Fund for Sacred Places.

All told, 26 supporters made gifts of $1 million or more, and more than 225 people made gifts of $50,000 or more. Annual support of $1,000 or more, the engine that sustains the organization, grew exponentially. Heartfelt thanks to the entire National Trust family for stepping forward with us to make our organization stronger, our lives richer, and our nation more united.

with thanksPhilanthropic support is the lifeblood of our work. We are honored to recognize the generous individuals, foundations, and corporations whose support from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 made it possible for us to champion America’s cultural heritage nationwide. We extend our deepest thanks to these individuals and institutions—and to all our supporters—for sharing our commitment to a stronger, more united America, one where all people see their stories in the places that surround us.

We extend our most heartfelt thanks to Stephanie Meeks for eight years of remarkable leadership as president and CEO of the National Trust. Stephanie’s vision, management expertise, and passion for historic places transformed the organization, saved hundreds of places, and helped to create an even more powerful, proactive preservation movement. She showed us all what is possible when we work together to unlock the potential of our historic places and put them to work to create a stronger, more united America. In recognition of her achievements, friends and supporters have stepped forward to raise nearly $400,000 through the Stephanie Meeks Preservation Fund to continue her commitment to saving America’s past and enriching our future.
