As we prepare for the coming of Christmas, of Christ himself, we ought to remember with great longing the good done us in our life of faith: that Christ has come to sever the age-old connection of sin to illness and death. He has come to give us true life and sin has no power over us anymore. Be full and joyful, knowing the greatness of God’s saving life that has been offered you. On Christmas Day we proclaim that Christ gives us “grace in place of grace”; by giving us himself we may become truly free not from the tyranny of another person only, but the tyranny of death. Freed from death and punishment by God’s saving love. Offered the forgiveness of sins, now we may share his life. Yet how willingly we miss it. How often we forget it. How regularly we prefer to remain unforgiven—thinking that God’s love is not great enough for our sins. God’s mercy is an infinite ocean. Sin is swallowed up by it for those who love him and seek to do his will. Be brave knowing that God is pouring out the greatness of his infinite love into the world. Please accept it and allow him to give you the fullness of joy and life he offers. Pastor’s Note: The CMA goal is at 38%!!! How wonderful! I cannot thank you enough for this jump over the last week. We are still 100,000k from our goal, but I’m so encouraged by your thoughtful and generous spirits. The hope is to be at 90% (or better) by January 1 st so that we can move onto other things. We have been moving at about 10% a week; if we keep it up, we’ll make the goal. If you have not given, please consider. If you are considering, please understand that anything helps! Thank you for making St. Benedict Parish among the leaders in our diocese on this! Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael

Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.

Sin and death have been equated since primordial time. This is perhaps something we don’t think about too often, but it’s worth it because we often have treated sin and death as two separate things, but to speak of freedom from sin is to speak of a better and fuller life. In the account of the raising of Lazarus, Jesus tells the witnesses when Lazarus emerges from the tomb still tied in burial bands to “untie him and let him go.” He says this as if he was a man released from prison rather than a man brought back from the dead. The genius of it is that they are the same thing–Lazarus has been released from his punishment and so are we. The hope is to be at 90% (or better) by January 1st so that we can move onto other things. Second Sunday of Advent May your hearts and homes be filled with hope, peace, joy, and love this Advent season.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)

KNOW & GROW TOPIC OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ? In the Latin rite of the Catholic Church, December 8th is the so-lemnity of the Immaculate Conception. In the United States and in a number of other countries, it is a holy day of obligation. When December 8th falls on Saturday, the precept of attending Mass is still observed in the United States. According to the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, when the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday (as it does this year), it is transferred to the following Monday.

So… what is the Immaculate Conception? There's a popular idea that the Immaculate Conception refers to Jesus' conception by the Virgin Mary. It doesn't. Instead, it refers to the special way in which the Virgin Mary herself was conceived. This conception was not virginal. (That is, she had a human father as well as a human mother.) But it was special and unique in an-other way...

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains the Immaculate Conception in this way:

490 To become the mother of the Saviour, Mary “was en-riched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role.” The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as “full of grace”. In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace. 491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854:

The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.

Because of the way redemption was applied to Mary at the moment of her conception, she not only was protected from contracting origi-nal sin but also personal sin. The Catechism explains:

493 The Fathers of the Eastern tradition call the Mother of God “the All-Holy” (Panagia), and celebrate her as “free from any stain of sin, as though fashioned by the Holy Spirit and formed as a new creature”. By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long. “Let it be done to me according to your word...”

By giving Mary this grace from the first moment of her conception, God showed us an image of our own destiny. He shows us that this is possible for humans by his grace. John Paul II noted:

In contemplating this mystery in a Marian perspective, we can say that "Mary, at the side of her Son, is the most perfect image of free-dom and of the liberation of humanity and of the universe. It is to her as Mother and Model that the Church must look in order to un-derstand in its completeness the meaning of her own mission" (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Libertatis conscientia, 22 March, 1986, n. 97; cf. Redemptoris Mater, n. 37). Let us fix our gaze, then, on Mary, the icon of the pilgrim Church in the wilderness of history but on her way to the glorious destination of the heavenly Jerusalem, where she [the Church] will shine as the Bride of the Lamb, Christ the Lord [General Audience, March 14, 2001].

This Is the Week When… Mittens, scarves, and hats gets sorted after the 9am

Mass on Sunday, December 8 in Dougherty Hall. Come, join the fun.

Food is taken to Marion for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The feast on December 12 is filled with much tradition and wonderful food; each year we sup-port our migrant brothers and sisters in their celebra-tion of their patronal saint.

Wrapped gifts are due back in both St. Bridget’s and St. Mary’s Churches. (Remember to firmly affix the gift tag to the outside of the wrapped gift.)

Gifts are sorted into family lots on Thursday, De-cember 12 at 6pm at St. Mary’s. If you’ve never partic-ipated in this hour of Christmas power, come this year. It is guaranteed to lift your spirits.

At 7pm on Thursday, December 12 a crew comes to “check it twice” to make sure all presents have been placed in the correct family pouch and that all gifts are accounted for.

After everything is “checked twice,” a crew goes shop-ping for missing gifts (If midnight shopping is your “thing”, contact Deacon Claude)

On Saturday, December 14 all gifts and food collect-ed at St. Mary’s are distributed to families who have asked for some help this year.

Then, next week, final preparations are made at St. Bridget’s. In these days before Christmas, each year a number of persons come asking for last minute assistance. Although they have missed deadlines for food and gifts, we provide gift cards to Walmart so they can have something to share with loved ones. If you want to contribute to this “Last Minutes Needs” outreach, please take an envelope from church (at St. Bridget’s, from the table in the back of church at St. Mary’s from the small tree in the front of the church) and return with your contribution ASAP.

Young Adult Gathering The Young Adult Ministry (ages 18-39) has planned a De-cember gathering on Thursday, December 12 from 6:30pm-8pm to be hosted by one of the members of the ministry. Dinner will be served at 6:30 and then a video dis-cussion will follow. To RSVP or for questions, contact Kris-ten at [email protected].

Help Wanted to Clean the PAC Bi-Weekly St. Benedict Parish is currently looking to hire someone for some light cleaning at the Parish Administration Center every other week for 2-3 hours. If you are interested or want more information, please contact Tony at (585) 394-1220, ext. 24 or [email protected].

Your Redeemable Bottles Are Still Needed Please remember that we continue to recycle your redeem-able bottles and cans through the winter months at St. Bridget's Church. We have a group of young people from Christian Heritage who come weekly to give us a hand in sorting and bagging. Your extra effort in donating your re-cyclables not only helps the children in Kenya, but also some of our own students looking to make a difference in the lives of others.

Youth Group Seeking Donations of Cookies The Middle School Youth Group is seeking dona-tions of cookies for their Cookie Walk on Decem-ber 15. If you are interested in donating, please contact Sarah at [email protected] or (585) 394-1220, ext 37. Donors will receive a voucher for $2 off per pound of cookies at the Cookie Walk. See page 5 for more information about the event.

Fontaine had the winning tick-et and gained $756. As wonderful as these results are, we only sold less than 40% of the tickets for the month. Just think how much more can be gained in the December drawing, which will happen on Sunday, December 22 after the 11:30am Mass. In De-cember, 40% of the profit will go to St. Mary’s School, 40% will go to Family Promise of Ontario County and the re-maining 20% will be split evening among four winning tick-ets. Please know that the information supplied to be included in the book will only be distributed to those parishioners who sit for a photo ses-sion, which will entitle them to receive a free copy of the directory. The directories will not be distributed outside of the parish. We will include the same information that has been listed in the past UNLESS we hear from households that ask us to withhold some of that information.
