Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.

This week’s Faith Focus comes from Fr. Clifford Dorkenoo, St. Benedict Parish’s Parochial Vicar Can you believe it? It’s been almost three years since I arrived from Ghana and to Canandaigua: “The chosen spot.” The saying is true, “Tempus fugit,” (Latin – ‘time flies’). I arrived to a loving reception of Fa-thers Stanley Kacprzak (Pastor), Daniel Ruiz (Parochial Vicar), and the other staff of St. Benedict Parish.

Before I came over from Ghana, I was billed to work at the St. Marianne Cope Parish in Henrietta, but it had been changed because I was late in getting here. So, St. Benedict Parish offered me a home before my formal appointment as the parochial vicar began with the new Pastor, Father Michael Costik. I am the only priest working in his home parish. It was beyond my wildest imagination, growing up and seeing all the European missionaries working so hard in Africa, that I was to share in their apostolate. By divine providence, here I am and what a wonderful journey it has been so far. It’s been a wonderful adventure of many teachable moments, most of which I will carry with me forever, and the best thing about it is that it’s not ended. Before Father Ruiz left the Parish for his next assignment, he was generous to leave me with, the “Job Description of the Parochial Vicar.” It has about forty-five duties and responsibilities clearly spelt out in a bullet form. When you have that much to get acquainted with, it takes you a while—almost eternity—and I admit I am still trying to catch up on them. The introduction says that, “The Parochial Vicar’s primary mission is to support the Pastor in every way pos-sible, to be of one in mind with him….” This I do not forget, but I must say that this has been made a lot easier and en-joyable due to the personality of my Pastor, Father Michael Costik. I am truly grateful. It's always a privilege to preside over Masses and other liturgical celebrations at St. Mary’s, St. Bridget’s, and the various nursing homes through which I interact with most of our parishioners. Each project gives us the oppor-tunity to pray for the needs of others and offer a financial contribution for the flourishing of these efforts. Operation Rice Bowl involves more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States to help alleviate situations of hun-ger and poverty around the world. Family Promise of On-tario County is one of 200 affiliates throughout the country who address homelessness on a local level. Each project has a collection box for your use. At the en-trances to each church on Ash Wednesday, there will be rice bowls for Operation Rice Bowl and milk carton homes for Family Promise. All monies collected for Family Promise will stay in Ontario County. 75% of ORB monies goes to support projects around the world.

GriefShare: Unpredictable Emotions The unpredictable timing and odd combinations of emo-tions that hit you during grief can leave you confused and despairing. “My life was totally flipped upside down emotionally, in every way you could think of,” says Sue, whose husband died. Your emotions not only hit hard, but they can also occur at unexpected moments, which makes the impact seem even worse. Being aware of the unpredictable nature of your emotions will help you stand firm during each new barrage. God’s promises in the Bible will also help you to persevere. In Matthew 5:4 Jesus promises comfort and a blessing for those who go through the process of grief and mourning: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Lord, when my emotions come and go with no semblance of order, remind me that this is to be expected during grief, and help me to stand firm. Amen. © MMIII, MMV by Church Initiative. Used by permission. Please visit www.griefshare.org to sign up for the free daily devotions. The devotions are also available in book format: Through a Season of Grief by Bill Dunn and Kathy Leonard. The grieving process is part of the life cycle we each en-counter. We at St. Benedict’s do not want persons to feel unsupported in these times of emptiness, aloneness, sad-ness and confusion. Please consider joining our weekly GriefShare group which meets Thursday mornings, or ask for a Stephen Minister to walk alongside you during your bereavement, or meet with a staff member. Contact Deacon Claude for more information.
