The affiliated companies in the Diehl Group – Sundwiger

Messingwerk (Hemer, Germany), The Miller Company

(Meriden, USA) and Diehl Metall Shenzhen (China) –

cooperate closely to produce and provide customized

packaging of copper alloys.

We supply strip and wire for the technologies of today and

the concepts of tomorrow. Our material portfolio ranges

from brass and bronze, low-alloy copper and nickel silver to

precipitation-hardened special alloys. Depending on customer

requirements, our alloys are plated according to the appli-

cation and provided with customized packaging.

State-of-the-art 20RG rolling technology and a stretch

leveling facility integrated into the process chain make

maximum thickness precision, narrow tolerances, minimum

residual stresses and long strip lengths our hallmarks.

We reduce our customers’ set-up times and optimize the

process chain from the cast to the stamping part.

We are committed to achieving sustainability and cost-

efficiency. Modern products with a long service life are

generated from our semi-finished goods.

With the Diehl Metall recycling loop, we ensure maximum

raw material efficiency.

We develop material concepts that enable plated stamping

scrap to be directly fed to a melt recycling process.

The trend toward miniaturization is rendering material-saving

design all the more important. We assist our customers in

achieving this by using high-strength material alternatives.

Hot-Dip Tinning

In almost all industrial sectors, the treatment of surfaces is

fundamental in applications where metals are used. One special

combination is the treatment of copper-based materials with

tin. Besides corrosion protection, the treatment ensures reliable

contact in connectors and easier wetting during fully-automa-

ted soldering.

In the areas of electrical engineering and electronics, electrotin-

ning and hot-dip tinning are well-established processes. While

electrotinning may be used to apply coatings with an outstanding

degree of accuracy, the system-inherent intermetallic phases

render hot-dip tinned surfaces largely resistant to whisker for-

mation, even without subsequent treatment. This is beneficial,

as the occurrence of whiskers is difficult to control and can lead

to failure of electrical components due to short circuiting.

By means of heat treatment, the thickness of the intermetallic

phase can be precisely controlled and adjusted to downstream

processing and the intended application of the tin-coated

strip. This also has a positive effect on insertion and extraction

forces, surface hardness and solderability.

1. Mechanical degreasing

2. Chemical degreasing

3. Pickling

4. Rinsing

5. Fluxing

6. Liquid tin bath

In order to fulfill the requirements of the end-use application,

such as mechanical strength, bending properties, electrical

conductivity and stress relaxation resistance, tin coating is

carried out on diverse base materials.

The companies of Diehl Metall are well-established among

their customers worldwide as synonymous with innovation in

production technology and materials.
