STRIKEFORCE

Welcome to the new re-vamped newsletter! Not only have we been hard at work developing a redesigned newsletter, we are also close to unveiling a new anniversary logo in preparation for our

80th year celebrations that will occur all throughout 2015. The logo will be revealed in the upcoming weeks and will be used by the club in the 2015 year.

We are the oldest club in the Southern Hockey Competition. A sub-committee has been formed and they have commenced work at making 2015 a sensational year for the Club (if you would like to join there is always room).

The pinnacle of the celebration will be on the 18th July 2015 where there will be a black tie dinner at Blundstone Arena. Keep an eye out over the upcoming months for the celebration plans.

We are at that part of the season where it is all hands on deck – both on and off the fi eld. There are fi nals for both the seniors and juniors, where we will be strongly represented on all fronts. Off the fi eld there was the draw of the 50 Club. Well done to Andy Isles our winner, and to Nick Tremayne and John Harris for organising the event. We have our annual Quiz Night at the end of the month, which is bound to be a magnifi cent night for all ages.

Best of luck to everyone in the fi nal series!

Jane Ansell – President, Derwent HC.

The Club is calling on all members to consider nominating a person for the following perpetual awards. Please email your nominations to Jane Ansell or Kathy Fahey by the 20th September 2014 with the reasons outlining the nomination. All nominations are strictly confi dential.

Alan Preshaw Perpetual Trophy for Best Club Man2013 Recipient: John Harris

Alan Preshaw was a founding member of the Derwent Hockey Club and passed away in 1964. The award is for the best male at the Club who has devoted their time and eff orts towards the Derwent Hockey Club over a number of years.

Michael Howarth Best Club Woman Award2013 Recipient: Tania Barry

The award is for the best female at the club who has devoted their time and eff orts towards the Derwent Hockey Club over a number of years.

Neil Owen Memorial Trophy2013 Recipient: Vaughn Bowen and Angus Bolton

Neil played for Derwent Hockey Club A Grade and coached junior teams. He was killed in a motorcycle accident at a young age while still playing A Grade. First awarded in 1991, this award was originally for a male person who has gone back to junior coaching after playing. The person must put back into the club what they got out of it. In some cases this award can be presented to a current player who has put a lot of time into junior hockey at the Derwent Hockey Club. With endorsement of Neil’s family, the award is now open to any male or female member of the Derwent Hockey Club.

Jack Dennis/Adam Tanner Goalie Award2013 Recipient: Nathan Fitzpatrick

C.J. (Jack) Dennis was one of Derwent Hockey Club’s original goalies and a founding member of the Club. Adam Tanner, who passed away at a young age, was a brilliant young goalie for Derwent from 1973 to 1990. The award incorporates the shield presented by Jack Dennis. Originally this award was presented to a men’s goalie but since amalgamation can now be presented to either a man or woman. The award is to recognise the achievements of goalies. The winner can be either a junior or senior.

Paul Fuglsang Award2013 Recipient: Michael Howarth

Paul Blackwood played centre forward for a number of years at Derwent. He scored many hauls of goals for the Derwent Hockey Club and was always a club person. To win this award the person must be eligible for under-age but, most probably, will be playing seniors. The most likely person to win this award is someone who has represented our state or has had an outstanding season for Derwent Hockey Club.

E & S Carmichael Award for Most Promising Under-age Female2013 Recipient: Eliza Westland

This annual encouragement award is to be awarded to an up and coming umpire who displays a willingness to umpire and actively seeks to improve their performance and develop their skills.

Rod Russell‐Green Award2013 Recipient: Jane Ansell and Kathy Fahey

The Rod Russell‐Green Award is the most important award in the Derwent Hockey Club. To quote the 1980 minutes of the DHC committee meeting: “This award is to be presented to the person who in the opinion of the selection panel shows qualities of the late Rod Russell‐Green towards the DHC”. The characteristics cherished in a player are: Quietly spoken, always contributing to the club, in the background, over a long period of time; and hasn’t sought recognition.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT FOR UNDER-AGE PLAYERS Please read a summary of the relevant section of the Southern Competition Rules which covers the requirements for safety equipment for ALL junior players. It appears that there is some confusion as to what the standards are.

In brief Derwent Hockey Club are requested to:

Enforce NO MOUTH GUARD – NO PARTICIPATION for training and games.

Encourage boys to wear groin protectors.

Ensure that players with the role of standing inside the post in penalty corner defence during competition and training sessions wear facemasks and gloves.

Strongly encourage the wearing of shin guards although not compulsory.
