NEW BOAT SHOWCASE

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 469Making its West Coast debut at Strictly Sail Pacific, the Sun Odyssey 469 is the newest offering from Jeanneau and acclaimed naval architect Philippe Briand. The ‘baby sister’ of the Sun Odyssey 509 launched by Jeanneau in 2012, the SO 469 offers many of the same features as this highly successful

yacht. Char-acteristic of Jeanneaus, the performance of the 469 under sail is un-matched among 46-ft yachts. It is sleek, fast and responsive.

Above decks it features a large, twin helm cockpit, folding wood table, fold-down transom, and integrat-ed running rigging led aft to the helm for easy single-handed sailing. Below decks, its 14’ 7” of beam gives it the volume and comfort of a 50-ft yacht. To see this yacht and other Jeanneaus, visit the Cruising Yachts display at the show.

Page 16 • Strictly Sail Pacific Show Guide • April 2013

RS VentureThe 16-ft RS Venture is the new benchmark of rec-reational sailing dinghies. The modern and stable design is great for family outings, instructional use, and racing fleets. A large cockpit comfortably accommodates 2-8 sailors and boasts a capacity of

more than 1,200 lbs. Excellent handling and a durable fiberglass hull make the Venture perfect for all skill levels, and a built-in reefing system ensures

comfort and safety. The RS Venture impressed Sailing World’s judges so much that it earned their prestigious 2013 Boat of the Year Award as the Best Recreational Dinghy!

Nacra 17See the all new Nacra 17, designed for the 2016 Olympics! This new design marks the return of mul-tihull sailing to the Games. The Nacra 17 high-perfor-mance catamaran is the fastest Olympic sailing boat and is attracting strong interest from top-ranked ath-letes worldwide. It is reinvigorating small boat mul-tihull sailing for the masses. The boat was designed

by Morrelli & Melvin, who have extensive experience de-signing and rac-ing on Ameri-ca’s Cup cats including Stars & Stripes in 1988 and BMW Oracle

in 2010, and they’re currently part of the Emirates Team New Zealand 2013 America’s Cup design team.

New Harbor 30 Daysailer PlusThe Harbor 30 was designed by Steven Schock to be a quintessential Daysailer Plus in the style of the Harbor 20 and Harbor 25. It has a Hoyt jib boom with roller furling, lazy jacks for the main, and a spacious

cockpit. The features and benefits of this excit-ing design include: ease of sail-ing, good stability, low main-tenance,

good performance, traditional styling, and inboard power. The Harbor 30’s cruising interior features interior liners with beaded board detailing and wood trim. There are 6-ft bunks for four adults, a full galley placed aft on the starboard side, and an enclosed head aft to port. All of the sail control lines are led to winch islands adjacent to the helm and cockpit.

NEW BOAT SHOWCASEDiesel Duck 462The 50-ft Diesel Duck 462 is a cooperative effort between designer George Buehler and Seahorse Marine to create a very seaworthy and livable long

range ocean passage-maker. George’s Diesel Ducks are Sail Assisted Trawlers (SATs) and can be found cruising all over the world. All

Diesel Ducks include important safety features not found on most cruising yachts: strong steel fire-proof hulls, extensive double bottoms, full recovery from capsize, many interior water tight compartments with sea doors, commercial windows, ports and hatches, easy to use sailing rigs for extended range, stabilization and “come home” capabilities, plus many other exclusive features.

The DD-462 has two staterooms plus a single bunk in the pilothouse and a settee in the main saloon that folds out to make a double bed. There are two heads, a large saloon, separate galley and stand-up engine room with workbench.

Beneteau Sense 46The Sense 46 will make her West Coast debut at Strictly Sail Pacific. Passage Yachts, Beneteau’s ex-clusive dealer in the Bay Area, will display the Sense 46 along with five other Beneteau sailing yachts. The Sense concept has become a new reference in cruis-ing monohulls for emphasizing cockpit space ideal

for entertain-ing topside; a central, one-level floor plan only three steps down from the cockpit; and a contempo-rary design through-out. Wide-

beamed and close to the water, the Sense 46 retains the innovative feature of a hull designed to offer a low heel angle, therefore guaranteeing outstand-ing seakeeping while optimizing sailing speed. The recent expansion of the range, now four models from 43 to 55 feet, is an indicator of its success worldwide.

Page 18 • Strictly Sail Pacific Show Guide • April 2013

J/70The J/70 is taking the world by storm: 300+ have been sold, with more than 15 fleets developed in the USA alone, and Europe has fleets forming in a half-dozen countries. It is no wonder! The J/70 introduces

a new dimen-sion of fun, fast sailing in this easy to own boat that all of your friends and fam-ily can enjoy. See this next/

gen family trailer-sailer at Strictly Sail Pacific.

Lagoon CatamaransBy any measure Lagoon is #1 in the world of cruis-ing catamarans.

Building more boats, selling more boats, developing new technologies, introducing new designs, Lagoon has done it all since the ‘80s. Longer than any other big production catamaran builder, Lagoon has been making the oceans safer, faster, and more accessible for cruising sailors. Join us at the show and find out all about the latest from the greatest.

NEW BOAT SHOWCASEMC38The MC38 raises high performance one design yacht racing to a new level in a one design class. Built by McConaghy boats, the MC38 brings a fun and excit-ing time on the water for owners and crew. Designed for international, interstate or interclub racing, the MC38 has a removable carbon keel-fin and is spe-cifically designed for ease of transport. McConaghy build and finish qual-ity ensure strong, fast and identi-cal boats for maximum racing without the need for maximum crew. The fleet is growing worldwide, with Sydney, Australia, enjoying the excitement of the first One Design Regatta in December last year.

Leopard 39Building on previous design features with the hulls and deck coming out of the same molds as the Leopard 38, the major modifications on the Leopard 39 are a new continuous hardtop and a raised helm station covered by a hard bimini. The Leopard 39 features two guest cabins to port with the starboard hull entirely dedicated to the luxurious and spacious owners’ suite. The performance-driven Leopard 39 offers comfort and an abundance of outdoor space. With her generous sail plan and hull design she

provides high perfor-mance yet is highly prac-tical and easy to use. Her large extended cockpit hardtop provides ex-

cellent shade and weather protection, and a power-boat-style stepped transom enables easier boarding. Solar panels are installed as standard on the helm hardtop to charge the onboard batteries.

Hobie Mirage Tandem IslandFleets of the Mirage Tandem Island are now found around the world. Hobie is a California company that has taken the California sailing ethos worldwide. Under sail the puff hits and the Hobie

Mirage Tandem Island’s leeward ama chisels into the water, its efficient, square-topped mainsail

immediately translating increased wind speed into extra boat speed. The Tandem Island’s two-piece carbon-fiber rig minimizes weight aloft – thus stiffening the ride – and both cockpits are fitted with steerage and sail-handling controls. Best yet, the amas, akas and rig are easily stripped, converting the Tandem Island’s rotomolded polyethylene hull into a highly efficient, pedal- or paddle-powered touring kayak with hatches and on-deck stowage.

SOS Emergency Rudder by ScanmarMany offshore regulations require boats to have an emergency rud-der system that is independent of the boat’s primary steering system.

The SOS system is a stand-alone emergency rudder, custom designed and fabricated for each individual boat. It is fabri-cated by proven stainless steel components used in Scanmar’s wind-vanes. This also keeps the price af-fordable. The SOS has a flip-down design that makes it reasonably easy to mount at sea. After initial mount-ing and testing it breaks down and stores in its own 4-ft bag. Only four brackets remain on the transom when it is stored below.

ATN Spinnaker Sleeve and The TackerAnybody can get a sail up. It takes a sailor to get one down.

That statement is particularly true regarding the spinnaker. The problem is not to hoist the sail but to get it back on the boat. That’s when the spinnaker sleeve makes the average sailboat owner a great sailor, who can make that very pow-erful and expensive sail disappear with a minimum of fuss and no assistance. And the sail is ready to be hoisted again immediately – no more packing!

The Tacker holds the tack, and the luff, of the spinnaker close to the centerline of the boat, and it can be adjusted up and down with the downhaul for a perfect trim. The new Tacker is now fitted with a snapshackle, which allows the operator to blow the tack of the spinnaker, making it even easier to control the sail.

Prism Polish Prism Polish has been formulat-ed to clean, polish and protect all metals in one easy applica-tion. The protective coating is designed to last 3 to 6 months.

Prism Polish contains no harsh acids, caustics or abrasives. it is safe to use on all metals, fiberglass, gelcoat, Plexiglas and painted surfaces. It offers the finest protection available for any chrome or stainless surface. It cleans and protects in one easy application, and restores tarnished and dull surfaces while protecting against salt corrosion and rust. It removes cloudiness from Plexiglas, clear vinyl, isinglass and Lexan.

Multi Season Antifoul Developed in the 1980s and available to the public since 1991, Coppercoat is possibly the most powerful and long lasting anti-fouling available to the modern yachtsman. This hard-wearing densely copper-filled epoxy resin is successfully protecting tens of thou-sands of boats the world over, saving their owners the time and expense of annual re-antifouling. Many users have now enjoyed more than 15 years continual protection from a single treatment!

Boye Knives These premier boat knives, the lockback folder and the Basic 3, are made from dendritic cobalt, an inno-vative blade metallurgy that won’t rust and just keeps cutting.

The cobalt folding knives are the con-summate personal carry: lightweight, compact, easy to keep with you at all times. The sheepsfoot blade is primarily for emergencies and splicing. The Basic 3 is a larger, heavier duty, all-purpose knife. The blunt tip combines safety and utility; the pointed version is just more all-around useful.

These knives are an investment in your security and personal control onboard. SkyHawk Model 9600 Binoculars

These binoculars are so high powered, they seem to bring sailboats, surfers and whales that are miles away right into your living room! Now boaters on land have a way to view coastal activities miles at sea with

these newly rede-signed binoculars.

SkyHawks combine the long-range view of telescopes with the easy-on-the-eyes, dual eyepieces of binocu-lars. You’ll be amazed at all of the details you can see with SkyHawks that you’ve missed all this time.

Jimmy Cornell to Present Blue Planet Odyssey Briefing on Saturday, April 13, FREE!Sailors will have a chance to find out more about the Blue Planet Odyssey when Jimmy Cornell makes a special pre-sentation at Strictly Sail Pacific on Saturday, April 13, at 4:45 p.m. The Blue Planet Odyssey is of special interest to West Coast sailors as it is the first round-the-world event to start from the North American West Coast, with starts in Vancou-ver and San Francisco, and also the first sailing event to transit the Northwest Passage.

The Blue Planet Odyssey is a round-the-world sailing event aiming to raise awareness of the global effects of climate change. The event is spearheaded by Jimmy Cornell, founder of the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) and organizer of several other successful international sailing rallies including five round-the-world events. This global sailing event will call at some of the most endangered islands – San Blas Islands in the Atlantic Ocean; Tuvalu, Tokelau, Tuamotus, Mi-cronesia and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean; the Maldive and Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean – as well as highlight the effects of climate change on the Arctic icecap, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Galapagos Islands, all of which lie on the Blue Planet Odyssey route.

The route of the Blue Planet Odyssey has been chosen to take advantage of the most favorable weather conditions and to pass through some of the most attractive cruising areas in the world. The route also includes stops or detours to some of the areas where the effects of climate change are already affecting the lives of their populations.

In line with the overall aim of the Blue Planet Odyssey, participants are expected to take an active part in some of the projects associated with the event. The Blue Planet Odyssey has met unprecedented success in its first months as more than 100 sailors have already pre-registered for the event.

Liza CopelandAward-winning, best-selling author Liza Copeland has written four books on cruising: three narratives and a ‘how-to’. Just Cruising and Still Cruising recount her family voyaging around the world, with Comfortable Cruising covering North and Central America. Cruis-ing for Cowards, a current, practical A to Z for coastal and offshore sailors, is co-written with husband Andy. In total, their Beneteau Bagheera has taken them 116,000 nm to 114 countries, with many more miles sailed together and separately both racing and cruis-ing on other vessels.

Zack SmithZack Smith has spent a good part of his adult life research-ing how parachute sea an-chors and drogues behave in changing seas. This led him to an industry first – his “Con-stant Rode Tension Theory.” Zack and his associate, Fiorentino, were given a team achievement award from NASA for providing never-before-published technical reports and counsel to the agency during drogue tests related to space capsule recovery.

Andy TurpinLatitude 38 magazine’s managing editor Andy Turpin is a lifelong sailor with a keen interest in the Tahitian islands and the rich Polynesian culture. Nick TurneyNick has been a sailmaker for ten years and is now the owner of North Sails Cleve-land. Nick has an impressive track record in racing on anything from one design boats to larger PHRF and IRC yachts. He currently focuses his time on sail development and coaching in many one design classes including Farr 40 and Melges 32, and offshore classes as well. He has many top-ten finishes in World, North American, and National Championships.

Jack GriffinIn his CupExperience Briefing, Jack Griffin will give you all the information you need to enjoy the Amer-ica’s Cup in San Francisco: important dates, how

and where to watch – on shore or on the water – and who’s racing. You’ll learn about the AC72 catamarans with their wing sails, about the design choices each team has made, and about how the sailors harness these over-powered monsters. Jack will tell you about the race course and the tactics and strategies we are

likely to see, including the pros and cons of hydro-foiling. The America’s Cup has always been a battle of tycoons and technology as much as seamanship and race tactics – you’ll hear how this America’s Cup compares with the classics of the past. You’ll understand why so many people care so much about, and fight so bitterly for this, the oldest and probably most difficult to win international sports trophy in the world.

Jack Griffin is just a club level racer but he is a world class America’s Cup specialist. Jack ran the fan club Alinghi Friends during the lead-up to the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain in 2007. He pro-vided expert commentary aboard the VIP spectator boats for Alinghi at both the 32nd and 33rd America’s Cups, and for Shosholoza, the South African Chal-lenger in 2007.

Don’t Miss the Cruisers’ PartySaturday, April 13, at 7:00 p.m.

About a dozen years ago, Bob Bitchin and Jody of Cruis-ing Outpost created the Cruisers’ Party at Strictly Sail Pacific. Cruisers come from all over to enjoy this annual celebration of the cruising lifestyle. Eric Stone will be live and in concert, and there will be free beer, wine, soft drinks, and pizza. There will be a raffle with great prizes: a $6,000 Spectra Ventura 150 Watermaker, a $5,500 one-week Dream Yacht Charter on a 40-ft Catamaran in Tahiti, and a WinchRite electric winch handle from Sailology. These are just some of the prizes. The proceeds from the raffle will go to benefit San Francisco’s Call of the Sea.

The event is free and open to all show attendees and exhibitors. It starts when the show closes at 7:00 p.m. You must be in the show prior to the show closing. Be part of the biggest, most fun sailing party of the year!

AMERICA’S CUP 34 Not only will the 34th America’s Cup competition be the most prestigious sailing event ever staged on San Francisco Bay, but it’s sure to be a whole lot of fun for all who turn out to watch its fast-paced action.

As the event’s organizers often point out, never before has an America’s Cup venue provided better viewing opportunities than here in the Bay’s “spectacular natural amphitheater.” And never before have organizers gone to such extraordinary lengths to make the Cup and its as-sociated activities more appealing to the general public. Below is a quick reference guide to upcoming Cup-relat-ed events.

America’s Cup Basics After the Golden Gate Yacht Club’s team, BMW Oracle Racing, won America’s Cup 33 in Valencia, Spain (2010), San Francisco was announced as the site for AC 34. The defender (Oracle Team USA), working with the Challeng-er of Record (Artemis Racing), defined the design param-eters for the upcoming competition, ultimately selecting the revolutionary AC72 catamaran design, which will be faster and more physically demanding than any previous AC boat type. Each AC 34 team must build its boat’s hulls in the team’s home country, and, if they choose to, each team may also build a second boat for training purposes.

As always, challengers will compete in the Louis Vuit-ton Cup match-racing elimination series, which is slated to begin in July. The eventual winner will face Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup 34 Finals, beginning in early September.

There are three official challengers:

• Emirates Team New Zealand

• Artemis Racing

• Luna Rossa Challenge 2013

About the AC72s The use of these 72-ft catamarans will truly bring America’s Cup racing into the realm of ‘extreme sports’ for the first time. With hull lengths of 72 feet and beams of 46 feet, these purpose-built speed machines employ 131-ft wing masts that harness enough wind power to travel at twice the apparent wind speed. In San Francisco Bay’s normal summer winds, speeds could be in the mid-40-knot range or higher. Added together, the wing and gennaker have a ‘sail’ area of more than 6,000 square feet.

In an effort to bring race fans as close to the onboard action as possible, each boat will carry video cameras and microphones.

The America’s Cup World Series Unless you’ve been hibernating under an overturned dory somewhere, you know that 2012’s America’s Cup World Series on San Francisco Bay (aboard AC45 cats) produced some of the most exciting racing ever seen here. As was widely reported, those events brought many of the world’s top sailors to the Bay, and many of them will be back this summer to compete in AC 34. Among them – to name but a few – will be Ben Ainslie, Russell Coutts, Jimmy Spithill and Loïck Peyron, in addition to the Bay’s own Paul Cayard and John Kostecki.

The final ACWS event will be contested this spring in Naples, Italy.

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup One thing that AC 34 organizers are very proud of is that this edition of Cup events has a greater commit-ment than ever before to developing young sailors into world-class athletes.

The centerpiece of this effort will be the first-ever Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, which will culminate in a series of races aboard AC45 cats that is scheduled for early September, just prior to the America’s Cup Finals.

During the lead-up to that event, many teams of top young sailors vied to be included in the competition. Some are sponsored by AC and/or ACWS (adult) teams, while others were selected from hundreds of applicants at the RBYAC Trials held in February.

RED BULL YOUTH AMERICA’S CUP SELECTION SERIES

Page 54: Strictly Sail Pacific Planner

The 34th America’s Cup brings the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport back to the United States for the first time in 18 years. And it does so in style, with exciting new boats, a new format for the racing, and television and web coverage that takes the viewer into the racing as never before.

The ‘summer of racing’ begins in San Francisco runs from July through September 2013, culminating with a one on one match in the America’s Cup Finals between the defending team, ORACLE TEAM USA and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series.

One of the most fiercely competitive and sought after trophies in all of sport, the

America’s Cup was first raced in 1851, 45 years before the modern Olympics. The U.S. yacht America won, giving the

international sailing competition its name.
