CONDITION: STRESS

SOURCES:Kiko Matsumoto's Clinical Strategies Vol. 1, Kiiko Matsumoto and David Euler

OVERVIEW: pp. 8889Stressors are any stimulus that produce stress. They can be extreme physical or psychologicalstimuli resulting from too much or too little. One example involves soldiers stressed byprolonged marching. They tend to have fewer circulating eosinophos than normal. Apsychological stressor is anything that an individual perceives as a threat to his or her survivalor selfimage. Subjective responses include a feeling of anxiety, anger, hate, depression, fearand guilt. Physiological stressors are usually accompianied by some amount of psychologicalstress. Almost any type of stress, will cause an immediate and marked increase in ACTHsecretion followed quickly by increased secretion of cortisol. Stress responses allow the bodyto adapt to the many stressors that it encounters. While injury incurred at this time acheivesaccelerated recovery from inflammation, this state does not promote healthy tissueregeneration. Dr. Selye's research led him to develop the mechanism of stress which statesthat stress, "is a condition of the body produced by any kind of injury and all types of harmfulstimuli manifested by a syndrome of changes." He named this the Genearl AdaptationSyndrome and viewed it as part of the body's complex defense mechanism.

ADRENAL TREATMENT:pp. 82

CATEGORIES OF DISHARMONY: Adrenal ImbalanceCLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS:

ShockTrauma (accidents, all types of abuse especially sexual and psychological, severe pain, fear of dying)Longterm stress

PALPATORY FINDINGS:Bilateral KD 15 1/2 @ 4 and 8 o'clockPULSE: N/ATREATMENT PRINCIPLES: Balance AdrenalsTREATMENT STRATEGIES & PLAN:

Front Tx:

Primary points: ipsilateral to the pp

KD27 with:

KD6standard, low energy, depressed immunity

LU545 degree angle with the flow; 8 direct thread moxa (DTM)

HT7needle first if KD27 is painful on palpationHT3substitute if HT7 does not release pp at KD27

Substitute KD6 with the following points below when the following areindicated:

KD3hypothryroid, respiratory tract/asthma (inhalation), rapid pulseKD4upper excess, LI 17 & LI 18

KD4upper excess, LI 17 & LI 18KD7bone problems, old age, dai mai, slow pulseKD9detox, structural imbalance, ear problemsKD10vertebral artery insufficiency or ovary when KD2 is tender.

use ST28 for ovaryuse KD7 + KD10 for KD2 tenderness

Secondary points: if the adrenal reflex does not clear by 60% then the followingpoints can be added:

SP9: bilateral insertion; 1015 degrees with the flow into gummy; underlyingspleen deficiency

see pp. 26880 for spleen disorder txGB25: 10 degree angle along the rib; underlying KD deficiency

see pp. 329337 for KD disordersBack Tx:

HTJ L2, L3, L4, GV3 & GV4

This treatment is used to strengthen the adrenal glands in order to increase their ability tosecrete hormones such as cortisol. It also regulates the medullary response of the adrenals intheir secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine. By releasing the constriction around thenavel, blood and qi can flow much more freely and allow relaxation to occur. First this treatmentattempts to release pressure pain around the umbilicus with distal points. If pain has reducedbut there is still some hardness or pp then secondary points are used to affect the navel area. The third part of treatment is using local points around the navel if pp hasn't been reduced fromthe distal and secondary points. Lastly, utilizing the back points in comination with otherclearing treatments (oketsu, immune, etc.) is supportive to the primary treatment. Significantlyreleasing pp around the navel will allow treatment effect to be stronger and last longer.

PATIENT EDUCATION/RECOMMENDATIONS:

Tiger Warmer: daily use around the umbilicus and on the adrenal reflex

PROGNOSIS:People with severe hardness or pressure pain at the adrenal reflex usually need moretreatments than people with lesser pain or softer tissue. Using a tiger warmer at home on theadrenal reflex can shorten acupuncture treatments significantly. Again, the more you can getthis reflex to clear the stronger and long lasting the treatment will be.
