Setting the Scene• The German princes

defeat Napoleon III in the Franco-Prussian War

• The New Age of the German Empire rises and French domination of Europe comes to an end

• Germany was now the foremost dominant power in Europe

• Germany was headed by William I and his Chancellor, Otto Von Bismarck

William I William I was born on March 22,

1797 and died on March 9, 1888

Was the King of Prussia from January 2, 1861 to March 9, 1888

William was also proclaimed the first German Emperor on January 18, 1871 in Versailles Palace

During his reign he reorganized and strengthened the army

Though known for uniting Germany he was hated for his militarism and for his belief of divine rule

Otto Von Bismarck

Otto Von Bismarck was born on April 1, 1815 and died on July 30, 1898

In 1870 he provoked the Franco-Prussian War

In 1879 he made the Triple Alliance and in the aftermath helped unite Germany

He introduced the world's first modern welfare scheme which provided sickness, accident and old age benefits (1883-87)

The Franco-Prussian War

The Franco-Prussian War began in 1870 and lasted until 1871. The war was

between France; under the leadership of Napoleon III, and Prussia. The triumph of Prussia resulted in the

creation of a unified Germany.

The German Industrial Giant

• Due to a vast amount of resources such as iron and coal, Germany was able to grow and prosper

• Discipline, an educated work force, and an increase of industrial workers contributed to the growth of the economy

• The German Empire was Determined to maintain economic strength and military power

In the late 1800s German Chemical and Electrical Industries boomed. German shipping was only second among European powers.

Germans founded large companies and built railroads.

Growth in population rose to 41 million to 67 million which provided a huge home market along with a larger supply of industrial workers.

The House of Krupp came to after 1871 and became an enormous industrial complex that produced steel and weapons for a world market.

August Thyssen built a small steel factory which consisted of seventy workers and turned into a giant empire with fifty thousand employees.

German Government issued a single currency for Germany, reorganized the banking system, and coordinated railroads built by the German States.

Worldwide depression hits and Germany tries to raise tariffs to protect home industries from foreign competition.

Campaign Against the Church

• Catholics make up about a third of the German population

•   Lutheran Bismarck distrusted them especially the clergy for he believed that their 1st loyalty was to the pope instead of Germany

• Due to this Catholic threat he launched the KULTURKAMPH also known as “BATTLE FOR CIVILIZATION”

• Goal to make Catholics put loyalty to the state above allegiance to the church

Bismarck’s Laws• The state had rights to

supervise Catholic Education

• The state could Approve appointment of priests

• Close some religious orders

• Banishment of the Jesuits from Prussia

• Which made it Compulsory for couples to be married by civil authority

Growth in Power• The Growing power of

socialism posed a threat to the new German state

• Late 1870s German Marxists organized Social Democratic Party

• Bismarck feared that socialists would undermine the loyalty of German workers and turn them toward revolution

•  In order to stop this Bismarck had laws passed but repression backfired

German Social Democratic Party (SDP) was established in 1875 with the publication of its Gotha

programme.

By the 1890s Germans had:- health insurance

- accident insurance- old-age insurance

The system became the model for other European nationsStill, Workers did not abandon socialism

• Born: January 27, 1859 Berlin, Prussia

• Died: June 4, 1941 Doorn, Netherlands

• Family: Born into the Royal House of Hohenzollern- He was the first grandchild of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom

• Important Dates: 1888 - Succeeded his

grandfather as Kaiser 1890 – Shocked Europe by

asking the dominating Bismarck to resign
