Speaking of Outings, our First Annual Mystery FlyTournament was our February Outing. If you wereunable to participate in the outing, you really missedout. We had almost 40 contestants in thetournament and I think that everyone had fun. Itwas such a success that we are planning on doing itagain next year. The Squirmy Wormy was thisyear’s Mystery Fly. We fished for 3 hours andcaught and released over 300 trout that were allcaught on the Squirmy Wormy. This fly is a real fishcatcher. I have used it in various scenarios andhave had success in all types of water. It reallyworks well in the dingy stained water that we will getto experience over the next few weeks as theresults of the heavy rains.

Fly of the Month

Local Tiers, Local Patterns

March is a month many a fisherman gets a seriousitch for a fishing trip and in Oklahoma, the troutfishing can be as good as it gets. The weather canbe spotty to downright wet and nasty and our warmwater fisheries are not yet productive. HoweverMarch is arguably the best month on the LowerIllinois to catch dozens of trout in a trip. Even better, those gray overcast days will likely find the MarchBrown mayflies emerging in abundance.

This month’s pattern is a March BrownComparadun. I tie this for the specific conditions onthe LIR, a sporadic hatch on relatively quiet waterwith hatchery fish aggressively feeding. This soundseasy, but you will likely find no particular feedinglane or pattern, so at best, you can target a singlefish cruising along and cast out in front of it. This flyis an emerger pattern that can stand a gooddunking, and will even pop back to the surface afterbeing pulled under. What more could you want?More about that later.

OutingsMark your calendars and plan to join us for ourupcoming outings!

March 10th - Fly Fishing Film Tour Our March event is our biggest and most importantfund raiser of the year, the Fly Fishing Film tour onMarch 10th. We’ve expanded the event this year toinclude dinner and our special guest, Kelly Gallup. We’ve also moved the event to an exciting newvenue. Please see the article in this newsletter forfull details. You don’t want to miss it!

April 21st - Lower Illinois River Clean UpIn April we’ll be giving back to our Homewater witha clean-up event. April brings warmer weather andthere’s always plenty of trash to be picked up. OKC’s 89’er chapter will join us. We’ll collect trashfor several hours in the morning, enjoy a freshlygrilled lunch at noon and spend the afternoonfishing the freshly cleaned waters of the LowerIllinois River.

Contact Heath for information: HeathTiefenauer at [email protected] See youthere!

2018 Conservation Issues

The Lower Illinois River summer trout fishery isthreatened by lack of water. The OklahomaDepartment of Wildlife Conservation will no longerbe able “borrow” water from Tenkiller lake to supportour summer and fall trout fishery. Our chapter ofTrout Unlimited is working with state agencies, other conservation groups, state and federallegislators in an attempt to negotiate water for theLIR. There will be a major meeting shortly with TU420 in attendance and we’ll keep you posted aboutthe outcome. Obtaining minimum flows for our“home waters” is our key conservation focus.

Improved water quality for our Scenic Rivers andthe Lower Illinois River stalled. Implementation &enforcement of improved TMDL/phosphorus loadsfrom upstream poultry operations and sewageplants were approved but are blocked by our OKCongressmen and governor. Yet another EPAwater quality study will now be required to causeour own state to come into compliance with it’s ownagreement with Arkansas.

TU420 2018 Legislative Conservation watch for

Tying a March Brown Comparadun/Emerger

This is one of the simpler dry flies to tie, providedone gets the materials and the measurementsabout right. Fortunately, the shank of a standard 10or 12 regular dry fly hook provides an easy measurefor both the length of the wing and the tail. Thethread is also used as the ribbing, so pick a colorthat goes well with brown or tan body dubbing. I usea heavier thread, usually 140 denier. A heavierthread is needed to firmly cinch down the short, straight, coastal deer body hair that forms the wing.I use moose mane for the tail because of thestiffness of the guard hairs, but any other stiff hairshould work as well.

Secure the thread slightly forward of the hook shankmidpoint. For a size 12 fly, a cleaned and stackedbunch of deer hair about the volume of a number 2pencil works for the wing. For thewing measurement, grab the deer hair with yourthumb and index finger with hair sticking out thelength of the hook shank.

Position the base of the hairs slightly forward of themid-point of the hook, leaving sufficient space fordubbing in front of the wing. Cinch the hair downwith 3 or 4 increasingly tight loops of thread untilthe tips flair arond the hook shank. Continue to holdthe hair butts on top of the hook. Don't worry abutthe hair tips spinning around the hook, you will pullthem back to the top of the hook later. When thehair is secure, trim the hair butts at an angle so thatthey taper to the hook bend.

TU420 2018 Legislative Conservation watch forharmful state bills regarding water transfers, water

quality issues or bills to eliminate or reducereasonable agricultural, chemical and oil and gaslaws are ongoing.

Pebble Mine good news. A temporaryrestraining order has been issued to block thenotorious Pebble mine in Alaska’s key BristolBay salmon fishery. Over 6 million citizens andconservation groups oppose this bad idea.

THE GARDENS TROUT PONDWhy a does TU420, NatureWorks and The YOTFoundation support the LaFortune Park TroutPond?

A few pictures are worth a thousand words.

We are entering into the final days for the TroutPond For Tulsa. We stocked just before Christmasand again just before Presidents' Day inpreparations for our Kid's Only Days at the pond.Coming in a few days will be our last stocking of the2018 season for the pond and our last Kids OnlyDay on Saturday March 17th.

Be reminded that YOU can fish on a Kid's Only DayIF you bring a kid fishing that day. ( and they arefishing with you!) This makes it a great TAKE A KIDFISHING DAY ... where they can catch a TROUT! So plan ahead and get ready to get your child, your

Page 7: Streamline - TU420.com · 2020-02-29 · caught and released over 300 trout that were all caught on the Squirmy Wormy. This fly is a real fish catcher. I have used it in various scenarios

Don’t cut the butts off too short as they are criticalfor the action of the fly.

Now pull the forward part of the wing to the top ofthe hook and build a tight dam of thread to help holdthe wing in a vertical position. I usually find I have afew errant hairs that are too long, or will not lie withthe rest of the hair. This is a good time to trim thosehairs out of the way and finish positioning the wingto the top of the hook. You don’t have to set thewing quite yet, but it should have a definite upwardprofile as you see in the picture below.

Clean and stack a smaller amount of stiff hair forthe tail. Once again, the length of the hook is aboutthe right length for the tail. In this case, hold theclump of hair in the opposite direction, tie it in at thebend of the hook, and trim the excess butts back tothe base of the wing. Use the thread to form asmooth and even taper, blending the butts from thewing and the tail together. At this point I thoroughly

grandchild, a nephew or niece hooked on fishing bytaking them to the Tulsa Trout Pond on March 17th.

This "urban" trout fishing experience is madepossible by contributions from the OklahomaChapter of Trout Unlimited #420, NatureWorks, TheYOT Foundation, The Tulsa County Parksdepartment and specific donations for variousindividual contributors.

coat the deer hair body with Sally Hansen’s clearnail polish. When this dries, you have basically builta dry fly with a deer hair bobber hidden in the taperof the body sealed with cement. The hidden bobberis the secret sauce that allows the fly to “Re-emerge” once it is pulled under. Sometimes the flywill pop back up through the surface film, but just asoften it gets stuck below the surface, which is a bigpart of the pattern’s effectiveness.

Give the body a minute or so to dry, and then beginwrapping a very light dubbing noodle from the wingtoward the tail in touching turns. From the tail, bringthe bare thread forward for a bit of a ribbed look.

Now you can add a thin dubbing noodle in front ofthe wing, holding the wing back and spreading it likea parasol towards the back of the hook. Thedubbing should finish the positioning of the wing, which should stand up to a vertical, tent shape whilein the vise. Move the thread forward and whip finishto complete the fly.

Before fishing the fly, coat thoroughly with sliconeoil or paste, folding back the wing in the shape of amayfly wing. I fish the finished fly aggressively witha tight line. In my experience, I often get a bumpinstead of a take. In that instance, I pull the flyunderwater with a short jerk or two. Often the samefish will come back and take the fly submergedbelow the surface film.

Sometimes there is more dunking than drifting, andthis is where the buoyancy in the deer hair bobberkeeps the fly near the surface in “Emerger” mode. This may already be familiar if you fish theCrackleback pattern, which is the only other trout flyI can think of designed to be fished both on top andunder the water in the same cast.. After you catch afew dozen fish, this fly can look pretty rough, but itis still effective. While not Catskill style of dry flyfishing, it is loads of fun and works well on our localwaters.

Author Kelly Brown will be interviewing anddocumenting local fly tiers on their favorite flies aswell as some of the flies he ties in the comingmonths. If you see him at the next General Meeting,be sure to thank him for putting this projecttogether.
