While designing this project, I decided that pink and yellow is my new favorite color combination! Isn’t it perfect for summer or spring? I remember as a kid, that the unofficial kick-off of the summer season was going to a local “pick- your-own” field to harvest baskets & baskets of strawberries. Then we would come home and eat strawberries til they were coming out of our ears, and Mom and Grandmom would make strawberry jam. Those fond summer memories are brought back with this fun, refreshing project. Here is a sweet little project for you! While designing this project, I decided that pink and yellow is my new favorite color combination! Isn’t it perfect for summer or spring? I remember as a kid, that the unofficial kick-off of the summer season was going to a local “pick-your-own” field to harvest baskets & baskets of strawberries. Then we would come home and eat strawberries til they were coming out of our ears, and Mom and Grandmom would make strawberry jam.

Those fond summer memories are brought back with this fun, refreshing project.

Supplies: • White Fabric- 5/8 yard • Pink 5/8 yard for block borders • Assorted scraps for strawberry appliques • Green- scraps for leaf applique • Yellow- 3/8 yard • Fusible web • Thread for piecing and applique • Backing fabric- 1 yard (40/42” wide) • Batting- 16” x 55”

Cutting Instructions (WOF=width of fabric) White:

• Cut 1 wof strip, 9” wide. From this strip, cut (4) 9” squares (block centers) • Cut 7 wof strips, 1 1/2” wide (block corners, block borders, table runner sashing and borders)

Pink: • Cut 5 wof strips, 1 1/2” wide (block corners and block borders) • Cut 4 wof strips, 2 1/2” wide (binding)

Yellow: • Cut 5 wof strips, 1 1/2” wide (block corners and block borders)

Making the Blocks: Applique the Block Centers: Trace applique patterns onto paper side of fusible webbing. Cut out pieces about 1/8″ outside of drawn line. Iron to WRONG sides of fabric, according to manufacturer’s instructions. Cut out on line and remover paper backing. Fuse to white squares and machine applique. Trim squares to 8 1/2″; set aside. Make the Block Borders: Sew a pink wof strip (1 1/2″ wide) to a yellow wof strip along the long edges. Repeat 3 times so you have a total of 4

pink and yellow strips (2 1/2″ x wof). Press seams to pink.

Trim off the selvedges and cut the strips into a total of (16) 8 1/2″ long units.

Make the Block Corners: Sew a pink wof strip (1 1/2″ wide) to a white wof strip along the long edges. Press seams to pink. Trim selvedges from the pink and white strip units. Cut the units into a total of 16 units which are 1 1/2″ wide.

Repeat above step to make 16 yellow and white units. Press to yellow.

Sew the pink/white and yellow/white units into 16 squares which look like this (2 1/2″ squares) and press to pink:

Assemble The Blocks: Sew a yellow/pink strip unit to opposite sides of a white center square, with yellow strips adjacent to white square. Press seams to yellow.

Sew a corner square to each end of the remaining yellow/pink strip units, so that pink corner square is adjacent to yellow strip. Press seam to strip unit.

Sew units to remaining sides of block centers, with yellow strip once again adjacent to white center square. Press to yellow. You blocks should measure 12 1/2″ unfinished (12″ finished size.)

Assemble the Table Runner: Remove selvedges and cut 2 of the white wof strips into (5) 12 1/2″ long strips. Sew these strips in between blocks and on the ends of the table runner (note orientation of strawberry appliques).

Sew remaining 3 white wof strips together so you have one long strip. Cut this long strip into (2) 53″ long strips. Sew to long sides of table runner.

Quilt as desired. Bind with 2 1/2′ wide strips of pink fabric. (To finish this project, I did free-motion stipple quilting around the strawberries, and then the rest was stitched “in-the-ditch.”)

Finished size approximately 14” x 53”.
