After much anticipation, the groundbreaking ceremony and construction for the firefighters memorial took place May 12.

ATCO gas is the primary spon-sor, and president Brian Hahn came to speak to the crowd and join in the celebrations.

“Safety is the number one focus of ATCO gas and by sup-porting the fire department and this great endeavor that they have here, it’s another way we can continue to contribute to the safety of our customers and the public here in Strathmore,” said Hahn.

The memorial is being built to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Strathmore fire department and the men and women who have dedi-cated their time throughout the years. The project had been in the works, being discussed and changed, for three years before a design was agreed upon.

Strathmore firefighter Jamie LaChance is happy there are so many supporters and donors to the project.

“What we really wanted to do ideally was involve as many companies as we could in town. The more people we got in-volved from the community, the more community united the

project,” said LaChance. “I think it’s a privilege to

work with all of these compa-nies,” said Mayor George Lat-tery.

“It was great to see all of the supporters of this project out, from the town council, to ATCO gas and our firefighters,” said Kimball Yorston, president of the Strathmore Firefighters As-sociation.

“It was a great show of sup-port.”

Genista Kippin, looking a lit-tle shy, spoke on behalf of the youth to the crowd. Genista is the daughter of firefighter Scott Kippin whose son Seth was also a part of the ceremony. Seth stood next to Lattery to help of-ficially break ground.

“I had a hard time picking be-tween the two, they both want-ed to do it,” said Scott.

The kids were involved as a way to show that the town and youth are united. Yorston and Hahn were on the other shovel.

“The reason we had four people on shovels was to show unity,” said LaChance.

After the ceremony drinks and snacks were offered inside the fire hall to all those who had come down to show their support. The memorial will be erected by July 1, just in time for Canada day celebrations.

An intoxicated man died while in the care of the RCMP after ar-riving at the Gleichen detachment.

The 47-year-old Strathmore man had been causing a disturbance in the Vulcan hospital, being verbally abusive to the staff and disruptive. RCMP were called to the scene where they arrested the man to be-gin transport to Gleichen.

“It’s about an hour drive but there are no cells in Vulcan and so Gleichen was the next closest place,” said Sgt. Patrick Webb. The results weren’t in yet, but an autop-sy was to be done to help deter-mine what the cause of death was.

“Unless he died of something which is obvious to the pathologist - they will end up doing a toxicol-ogy,” said Webb.

“Vulcan does not have secure facilities for someone like that, so when you get somebody that’s be-ing very disruptive they can’t treat him. If he’s medically sound, all they can do is release him to the RCMP.”

After arriving in Gleichen the arresting officers noticed the man was in medical distress and quickly becoming unresponsive, and they called EMS.

The paramedics worked on the man trying to resuscitate him, but were unable to revive him.

“Its very unfortunate to have this happen, we don’t want any-body to die in our custody, but in this case it appears to be a medical dysfunction of some type and we are just waiting on the medical ex-aminer to give their word on that,” said Webb.

The man’s name had not been released at press time. The RCMP Major Crimes Unit will lead the in-vestigation into the circumstances behind the death.

Injury Motor Vehicle Collision at the Intersection of Secondary Highway 817 & 901

On May 14, 2010 at approxi-mately 11:50 p.m., Stathmore RCMP, Fire and EMS were dis-patched to a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Sec-

ondary Highway 817 and Second-ary Highway 901.

As a result of the initial in-vestigation, it is believed that a 1991 GMC Sierra pickup truck was stopped at the stop sign on Highway 817, South of Highway 901. As a Westbound semi tractor-trailer was approaching the inter-section, the driver of the pickup pulled north into the intersection and was stuck by the semi tractor-trailer.

The two 18-year-old males in the pickup sustained serious in-jury. The driver of the pickup was transported by STARS air ambu-lance to the Foothills Hospital. The passenger was also trans-ported to the Foothills via ground ambulance, where they have both been treated for their injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured in the collision.

An RCMP collision reconstruc-tion analyst is assisting the Strath-more RCMP members with scene investigation. Alcohol is not be-lieved to be a factor at this time. The collision is still under inves-tigation.

The Hope Commu-nity church hosted a Tapestry of Arts night and a night of music this past weekend. The Tapestry of Arts took place Saturday night and there was a variety of artwork dis-played by members of the community and the church.

“It’s an opportunity for people to share the creative gifts they

have been given and to open up what that means,” said pastor Kirsten Waldschmidt.

Her husband Steve helped set up for the performers who took the stage. There were skits, singing, and tap dancing. Performers were members of the church and the event was open to every-one in the community to come and enjoy. Sunday night the 50+ group put on a night of music. Artists were

invited to perform and some of those who took part in Saturday night came to perform again for Sunday.

Chuck Bayley sang “He Turned Water Into Wine’, and violinists also preformed.

The event wasn’t as well attended as some of the previous ones but there were still ap-proximately 60 people who showed, said Kar-en Bayley.

“I think it might be because we had the

two events back to back, but we still had a really good time,” said Bayley.

“I think everybody really enjoyed it, and the performances were

really good. There was lots of diversity which I think is a really good thing.”

The church plans to hold another night of music in the fall.

Strike a Balance between Major Purchases

and Long-term GoalsWith an improving economy and continued

low interest rates, you may be feeling confident enough to consider making a major purchase this summer, such as a new boat or a home renovation. However, before making a move that may involve taking on a significant new debt, you may need to create a “purchase strategy,” similar to your long-term investment strategy.

The first step in this strategy should be to determine how much money you’ll need - and when.

Next, you should identify the savings and investment vehicles that may be appropriate for short-term goals, such as the major purchase you may be considering. Put as much as you can afford into these investments, but don’t short-change yourself on contributing to your RRSP or other retirement-savings vehicles.

This balancing act can be challenging, which is why you may want to work with a professional financial advisor - someone who can help guide you as you work toward both your short-term and long-term goals.

When you’re feeling optimistic, it can be tempting to go ahead and make those big purchases. But you’ll enjoy them a lot more if you’ve obtained them through a sound financial strategy.

Healthy eating and active living is talked about almost daily, but many kids do not know what it means.

The Golden Hills School Division has been asking schools to implement more healthy initiatives, and find ways to teach the kids to be active and healthy. Susan Shearer of Wheatland Ele-mentary School thought of a way to do just that. She want-ed to find a way to bring the school and the community to-gether, and so she created the Active Living Community Day.

“It was kind of a brain-child of mine, how to meld the school and community together,” said Shearer.

Activities took place both inside and outside the school, starting at 1 p.m. May 13.

The students were treated to healthy smoothies, and at one station they were taught how much sugar is really in their favourite drinks.

“This is a great activity for the kids to do during the school day. They are cover-ing nutrition and healthy choices for snacking. This is a really great activity that’s getting them involved and trying it out,” said Timothea Jakubowski, one of the teach-ers.

The students participated in a short dance lesson, ar-chery, soccer, football and T-ball among other activities.

Everyone was able to par-ticipate in the activities in-cluding special needs child 7-year-old Jonah Teunissen.

“It’s awesome, it’s been great. It works with Jonah and he gets to do it with ev-eryone else,” said Sherri Judd

who is a special needs educa-tional assistant.

Grade six students were the leaders of each of the groups; they were given maps and directed their groups to each activity according to the map.

Students rotated every ten minutes so each group would get the chance to participate in every event.

“The kids get a chance to try stuff out and then they can go home and tell their parents about it,” said Michelle Bean.

Some of the corporate/community participants in the day included Sobeys, Jump-house, Expressions of Dance, Benjamin Moore Paint and just about every sports club in town. Agrium also donated money, allowing the school to purchase ‘Olympic medals’ to award to the kids at the end of the day.

Why does my dog’s breath smell so bad? Is there anything I can do to help it?

Ask the Veterinarian!Q

A Halitosis, or bad breath, is commonly seen in dogs who have not had proper dental care. tartar build up on the teeth

creates an overload of bacteria which ultimately causes foul breath. By the time your dog’s breath has reached the point of “no return” it may be just that! often he will need a full dentistry to correct the damaged and diseased teeth that occupy his mouth.

in rare cases an underlying medical condition may be the cause of bad breath. in either case, a visit to your veterinarian is needed to fully determine and treat the cause of your dog’s halitosis.

Manny EvErEttStandard Mumincipal Library

The Standard Municipal Library hosted an author talk and video conference by Mary-Ann Kirkby, author of the book I Am Hutterite, on May 11. Sharon Duffala, Stan-dard’s Librarian did a lot of foot-work into bringing this particu-lar video conference to Standard. She is promoting some other new and innovative ideas in our local Library and also would like to do more video conferences. Drop by the Library or call her at 403-644-3995 to see what is being offered. Twenty-six people from the com-munity of Standard were present as well as over 50 more combined through the video conferencing from the communities of Acadia Valley, Delia, Drumheller, Hussar, Oyen, Ralston and Rockyford.

This was the first time Kirkby had done a video conference but it was evident that she had no problem speaking to the crowd. She was entertaining and humour-ous, as she recounted some of her story and read excerpts from her

book. It took over 7 years to write it and it was not easy at times but a journey that she had to undertake nonetheless. Kirkby told the group that it was painful and exhilerating and freeing altogether. Kirkby was not ashamed of being Hutterite but rather wounded by the misrepre-sentation that she felt from the out-side world looking in. She felt an obligation to tell a truly Canadian story and give her son an ability to appreciate and an understanding of his rich heritage. Something that anyone who heard her story that night could really embrace was that we all have a story and we all need to embrace who we are. Such an amazing life lesson built around her amazing life.

In 1969, Kirkby’s parents did the unthinkable. They left a Hut-terite colony near Portage la Prai-rie, Manitoba with seven children and little else, to start a new life. Overnight, the family was thrust into a society they did not under-stand and which knew little of their unique culture. I Am Hutter-ite takes you inside Fairholme Col-ony where Kirkby spent the first

ten years of her life. Her intimate portrait of Hutterian people opens a window on a closed community and reveals a way of life that seems extraordinary to the outside world.

If you haven’t read this book, it is an amazing read and you can pick it up at your local library or purchase one at any bookstore.

The following day Mrs. Kirkby was the keynote speaker for the Marigold Library at the Travelodge in Strathmore for their workshop.

Freezies for HaitiWhitney Stout and Lauren Gavey were two students who volunteered their time during lunch to sell freezies to raise money for Haiti. Due to the bad weather students had to wait for a nice sunny day, which they finally had on Thursday May 13. The freezies were being sold for a minimum of .50 cents though many students were just giving whatever change was in their pocket. Over this past school year stu-dents from Strathmore High School have raised over $6,000 for the earthquake relief fund. Shannon LeClair Photo

Correction to the residential irrigation article

There is a correction to last week’s story, Irrigation going down the drain. The total cost to repair the system is approximately $750K, and not $3.4M as indicated. The number presented was not

an EPCOR estimate - it is a town estimate that has been supported by EPCOR. Also, there are approximately 1,300 residences that could connect to the residential irrigation system, not the

13,000 as indicated. We apologize for the error and any inconvenience it may have caused.

The United Church of Canada celebrat-ed its 85th anniversary, and in Strathmore, it was celebrated with a strawberry tea.

On Sunday, members of the community and the church joined together for tea and strawberry shortcake. It was a social after-noon, and for $3 people were able to sit and be served their tea and cake, and after they could purchase things from the bake sale or crafts tables.

The tea was open to anyone to stop in and enjoy.

“I saw there would be a tea and thought it would be so neat to be involved, and it was,” said Hilda Anderson, who helped serve.

Members of the church and the commu-nity donated all of the items sold at the sale.

“You wouldn’t believe what we had, we didn’t even have room for it all,” said Ethel Nielson, who helped at the bake sale table.

There was everything available from jams and jellies to pies, cookies and cupcakes.

The church quilting group also dis-played the 30 quilts they have made since Christmas. The quilts were not sold, but will instead be given away to the Com-munity Crisis Society, Victim Services and the Mustard Seed, among other places in need.

“A lot of them (church members) are in-volved in the community as well, not just the church,” said Jan Giles.

There were door prizes given out: Fran Kehler won a basket full of goodies and Alice Christison won place mats.

“It was very nice, the strawberry short-cake was delicious,” said Christison.

“It was beautiful. I don’t eat strawber-ries so they were kind enough to give me a piece without any,” said Kehler.

Approximately 100 people attended the tea, and a portion of the funds raised will go to the mission and service fund in Toronto, and the rest will be put into the special project fund at the church.

Tea, Bake sale a success

The performers were members of the community, and many of them had taken part in the Tapestry of Arts night the day be-fore. The 50 plus group at the Hope Community Church held a night of music this past Sunday. A small gathering of some local talent came out to entertain the 50+ community. The 50+ group, organized by Karen and Chuck Bayley get together about once a month to plan differ-ent events. Some of the local tal-ent that came out on Sunday were Jacinda and Talia Sinclair (violin), Rosella and Friends, John Portal, Chuck Bayley and Amy Wegner. Wendi tashlikowich Photo

Westmount Challenge Group students spent a few hours at the Strathmore fire department on may 13. The kids had the chance to spray the fire hose, squash and cut pop cans, and climb aboard the ladder truck to move the ladder around.

The teachers picked one to two people from each class to do a special project.

The kids ranged from grades one to six. Left - Hannah Carlson, a grade two student

sprayed the fire hose, knocking a bucket off the top of a ladder.

Bottom left - Chanel Guichon climbs off the ladder truck after taking her turn operating the ladder.Bottom right - Logan Salm, a grade three student, squashed, then cut a pop can, using some of the tools firefighters use. “i wish i could have cut the big bottle, but it’s plastic and wouldn’t cut.” Shannon LeClair Photos

Vancouver author visits StrathmoreShannon LeCLair Times Reporter

C.C Humphreys is a well-known name when it comes to historical fiction writ-ers.

Humphreys came to the Strathmore li-brary on May 13, to do a videoconference and speak about himself and his work.

“My theory about writing is that I write what I am passionate about, and I put things into it that are going to make me get up in the morning and get in front of the blank screen,” said Humphreys.

“Some people think you have to be ac-ademic but I wasn’t, I was only interested in what I was interested in.”

Humphreys was born in Toronto but grew up in London, and all four of his grandparents and his dad were actors.

“I always loved history, and I loved English so I suppose it’s not a surprise I ended up an author of historical fiction.”

“It was very good, I got lots of good

heideas,” said Katie Kenig, a member of the Strathmore writers club.

“I found it fascinating,” said Ninette Maga an attendee.

Humphreys has written and published nine books to date and is currently work-ing on his tenth, ‘The Hunt of the Uni-corn’ which will be out next March. It will be the fourth book he has written for young adults.

The Reds and six other teams took over the Kinsmen ball diamond over the weekend to play the provincial tier. As the season continues the teams will be matched up with other teams equal to their playing level. Shannon LeClair Photo

Midget AA gamesShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The first of three provin-cial tier tournaments took place in Kinsmen Park over the weekend. Seven teams came out to play with games going all day Satur-day and Sunday.

The teams play each oth-er and as they win or lose they are placed with other teams at their level in or-der to keep things evenly matched.

“It was good, the ball teams were pretty evenly

matched,” said Reds coach Keith Hempel of the week-end’s games.

By the time the year is over, each team will be playing their competitive match. The first game for the Strathmore Reds was at 9 a.m. Saturday against the Innisfail Indians. The Reds lost their first game of the weekend 12-1.

“Saturday morning’s game they made some er-rors, they weren’t quite awake yet, but after some wind sprints and a run around the lake they played

really well in the second game,” said Hempel.

In the second game of the day the Reds faced off against Rocky Sundev-ils from Rocky Mountain House, beating them 10-9 in an extra inning.

Sunday didn’t look good for the team; they had only one game lined up for the day at 4 p.m. They played against the Lacombe Dodg-ers, and the Dodgers won 6-3. The Reds are set to play again June 12-13. It is not yet determined where the games will be held.

Lacrosse team makes huge comeback Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

Strathmore’s midget B lacrosse team, Venom played against the Cal-gary Axeman on May 12. The boys on the team are ages 15 to 16, and were headed for what looked like a tough loss.

The score was 2-0 at the beginning of the sec-ond period. The Axeman scored their third goal six

minutes into the second period, followed within seconds by the first goal for the Venom. Then Axe-man grabbed their fourth goal of the game. Venom fans seemed to be pre-paring for the loss.

With a score of 5-3 at the end of the second period, Calgary had sud-denly lost the gap they had felt comfortable with. Strahmore made an epic comeback and man-

aged to bring the score up. Venom won the game with a final score of 10-6 surely leaving the Axe-man with their mouths hanging open at the de-feat.

“That’s a huge come-back, it was great,” said coach Todd Betterton, “I’m really proud of them.” The midget B team is sitting at 2 wins and 3 losses for the sea-son.

Strathmore teen placed 7th in provincials Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The badminton pro-vincials took place in Canmore and Banff the weekend of the eighth.

Tyson Zarowny from Strathmore high school was the only one from town to go to provincials.

“He did very well,” said coach Kenton Zandee.

Zarowny finished with seventh place in the

province. Carley Melcher and

Shavonne Tapaquon from Standard lost their first game and won the next two. With the wins the girls had a chance to play in the semi-finals on Saturday, where they took fourth place.

Michelle Ryan and Jen-nifer Geeraert played for the senior girls from Standard, and they won their last game of the

competition. ‘They came up against

some stiff competition I think. They did their best,” said Ed Yuel from Standard school.

“Whenever you have a provincial badminton tournament you can have some really advanced players attending. It’s a good experience for us to be able to see some higher levels of badmin-ton.”

Strathmore Venom, Midget B played the Calgary Axeman May 12. It looked like a sure loss for the team heading into the third period. Venom made a massive comeback and took the lead, winning the game 10-6 and leaving Cal-gary in shock.

Shannon LeClair Photo

Strathmore Venom, Midget C played against High River Heat on the weekend. The crowd was going crazy, erupting in cheers every time Strathmore got the ball. One of the boys was given a twelve-minute penalty for not wearing his mouth guard properly. Strathmore was short handed for two minutes, and then the player spent another 10 minutes in the penalty box. Strahmore won the game 8-5. Shannon LeClair Photo

Blading for cancer Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

Winnipeg business student Daniel Cloutier, 21, is taking a different ap-proach to raising money for cancer.

Cloutier was struck by inspiration af-ter his uncle lost his fight with cancer a few years ago and more recently his grandmother was diagnosed.

He gathered his girlfriend Chantal Courcelles, and his friend Eric Foidart, and with the help of sponsors, like the people from GNR Camping World in Winnipeg, he began his trek.

Cloutier is rollerblading across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He began his trip on May 1, starting in Van-couver, and hopes to end it on July 31 in Halifax.

On May 13 Cloutier went through Strathmore, not long after leaving Cal-gary with a police escort.

“I’m trying to do about 75km a day, and on nice pavement I can go for a long time. At night the team stops at campgrounds,” said Cloutier.

His mission is not to target one type of cancer but to raise money and aware-ness to all types. He had been planning the trip for about a year and wanted to do it while he is young.

He has found that many people have been friendly and helpful thus far into his trek, and has been fortunate the wind has been at his back, helping to push him along.

“Everyday people are stopping at the side of the road to get pictures,” said Cloutier.

Rollerblading has always been some-thing he has been passionate about, and so when he set his mind to journey across the country raising money, it was

no contest as to which way he would do it.

“He came to us trying to raise money for cancer, and we said sure no problem and we grabbed a brand new trailer and, helped get it decaled and, helped him get going,” said Jim Gorrie from GNR.

“There’s a lot to know and do for him, it was a pretty big thing for him to take on and I’m sure he’s learning everyday on the road.”

Murray Chevrolet, out of Winnipeg, donated a truck for the journey and oth-er sponsors helped the team out with things like rollerblades and gear.

This will be the first time anyone has rollerbladed across the country.

“People run or bike, but this is the first rollerblading one that I can think of,” said Jason Permanand communica-tions specialist for the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba division.

“We are happy that he chose the Cana-dian Cancer Society to donate his money to. There are a lot of other good chari-ties to donate money to, and with his uncle’s death and his grandmother’s re-cent diagnosis he obviously has an inti-mate connection with cancer. We’re just thrilled that he’s putting in this great ef-fort to raise money for a great cause and for the fight against cancer.”

To keep track of how Cloutier is doing or to donate to his cause visit his web-site www.dontstopbelieving.ca

Daniel Cloutier start-ed in Vancouver on May 1 and plans to rollerblade across the country to help raise money for cancer. Depending on the weather he hopes to make it to Halifax by July 31. Shannon LeClair Photo

The Fun Country Riders got the 2010 season off to a great start with beautiful weather and a huge turnout of riders. The first Show and Gym-kana took place on Sunday, May 16 at the Strathmore Rodeo grounds. Much thanks goes to Michelle Welsh for judging the large classes of rid-ers. We would also like to thank all the volunteers, including many brand new ones, who made this show run smoothly despite the large numbers of participants.
