So…we missed ALL the snow and cold Sherwood Parkians experienced. Newfoundland was a unique and very pleasant experience, but I love PEI! For me, PEI, at this time of year, is all blue (the ocean) and green (the grass and the rest of the flora) and red (the soil). Oh…and very fresh seafood…twice a day for 14 days! It is a delightful province! And, the flowers (both gardened and wild) are still blooming. We cycled along the Confederation Trail from Tignish on the far West to Elmira on the East Point, and I was amazed at the wild flowers in bloom along the trail. I can actually lay claim to cycling across an entire province from end to end. 1

President’s Message

Hello, Fellow Gardeners!

Welcome to winter! Brrrr… Well, at least we do not have the snow that Calgary has! My husband and I just got back a week ago Tuesday from two weeks in Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.

However, all good things do come to an end, and the day after returning home, my husband and I were off to Old Man Creek to harvest and clean up! All the carrots and beets and parsnips are now harvested, and wonderfully, the Swiss chard and kale survived the cold. I had to pick both, especially the kale which was growing quite profusely. So…what to do with all that kale? I had already frozen several full jars for soups and pasta sauces during the winter. So, I decided to try my hand at kale chips. Quite a few people had been telling me how much they and their families enjoy kale chips, and they were not wrong. After tearing the leaves into small pieces and working in a bit of olive oil and a fair amount of grated parmesan cheese, I experimented with baking the kale until it was just right! Then I could not help snacking on the chips for the next two days. What an incredible way to get all those vitamins!

Unfortunately, I missed the September garden club meeting, but I am told it was a “hot” workshop. Many thanks to Brenda for arranging the salsa workshop and setting up the tables and the tarps and everything else, and to other members of the executive who helped. My thanks also to Mary, our vice president, for chairing the meeting.

And now about the October 11th meeting! I have many times heard from garden club members who are impressed with the strong organization of the club. This would not happen without a group of people who are dedicated and enthusiastic and great organizers. It is a pleasure to be a member of our executive and a member of our club. With this in mind, I invite all of you to our October 11 th meeting. For the first ½ hour (maybe less, if I can keep my part short), we will be holding our Annual General Meeting, as is required by the Society Act. An important part of the meeting will be to fill five executive positions that are up for election this year: treasurer, membership coordinator, fundraising coordinator, phoning coordinator, and newsletter coordinator. Rest assured that this part of the evening will be fun, perhaps even “hot”, although difficult to complete with our wonderful guest speaker, Joe Gadbois, who will be speaking on the topic of Preparing the Yard for Winter. If anyone is able to bring joy to this topic, it is certainly Joe. And, the third part of the evening will be devoted to our Taste of the Season. We invite club members to bring a dish they have prepared from their harvest this season. In past years, we have truly feasted on the most delicious food. If you remember, bring a recipe that we can include in our next newsletter. Susan, our fundraising coordinator, will also be organizing our monthly draw so if you have an item to donate to the draw, please bring it. I would also like to remind you that memberships are up for renewal by January 1, 2019; however, you are welcome to submit your membership form and fee for 2019 at this meeting. While Pat, who will be greeting you at the membership table, will have forms available, please consider going onto our Strathcona County Garden Club website, running off the membership form, and filling it in for the meeting.

I would also like to tell you that our vice president, Mary Justik, has decided to step down from her position with the executive of the club. I thank Mary for her contribution to the club and wish many good things for her. And finally, I would like to welcome three new members: Greta Poulin, Marvel Opio, and Sherlynne Mackintosh. We are now at 165 members! I hope that you enjoy being a part of this club as much as I do.

See you next Thursday! Donna Reimche

your garden, along with the recipe to include in the next newsletter.

As always, bring your own mug for a chance to win a Tim’scard. Your donation of items for the raffle table is greatly

appreciated as is your support in purchasing tickets.

Getting the Job DoneI repeat (from last month)! The Executive Committee keeps our Club running smoothly, ensuring that we have interesting and exciting, even educational! events for us all. But I would be just plain SELFISH if I didn’t also tell you how much fun we have getting the job done for our members. We have a great sense of camaraderie, have a lot of laughs, enjoy a feeling of teamwork and get to make new friends, all the while organizing events and outings and just taking care of business. We invite you to share in our fun!

This year, 5 positions on the Executive are open for election, each for a 2-year term: treasurer, membership coordinator, fundraising coordinator, phoning coordinator, and newsletter coordinator.

However, we also have some positions which are or will be vacated for which we require volunteers. These include the Regular Meeting Coordinator (officially vacant for a year, but unofficially and brilliantly filled by Brenda Brooke); the Vice-President (as Mary Justik will be stepping down in January 2019); and the Snack Coordinator (Nadia Koscielnuk and her sidekick Eleanor Resler will both be stepping down at the end of 2018). We all know that no organization can function without someone to make the coffee. No snacks in January? Unthinkable!! I can’t bear it!!

Seriously folks, we need a few of you to step up and take on some light duties for the Club. Our membership continues to grow, bit by bit. Please actively support our Club; we need your enthusiasm, energy and, perhaps most of all, your new ideas.
