    Education An Overview :-

In English the term Education has been derived fromthe Latin wordEducare (Educere). Educare means to train or mould. In Hindi, theterm Siksha has come from the Sanskrit word Shash which means

to discipline, to control, to order, to direct, to rule etc. There isanother term in Sanskrit, which throws light on the nature of

education. It is Vidya which means knowledge.

Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man. Like fire

in a piece of flint, knowledge exists in the mind. Suggestion is the

friction; which brings it out.- Swami Vivekananda

Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which knowledge,

skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one

generation to the next through teaching, training, research, or simply

through autodidacticism (i.e "learning on your own" or "by

yourself"). Generally, it occurs through any experience that has a

formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts.

Generally speaking, Education is utilized in three senses: Knowledge,

Subject and a Process. When a person achieves degree up to certain

level we do not call it education .As for example if a person has secured

Masters degree then we utilize education it a very narrower sense and

call that the person has achieved education up to Masters Level. In the

second sense, education is utilized in a sense of discipline. As forexample if a person had taken education as a paper or as a discipline

during his study in any institution then we utilize education as asubject. In the third sense, education is utilized as a process. In fact

when we talk of education, we talk in the third sense i.e. education as a

    process.

Thus, education may be defined as a purposive, conscious or

unconscious, psychological, sociological, scientific and philosophicalprocess, which brings about the development of the individual to the

fullest extent and also the maximum development of society in such away that both enjoy maximum happiness and prosperity. In Short,

education is the development of individual according to his needs anddemands of society, of which he is an integral part.

In its narrow sense, school instruction is called education. In this

process, the elders of society strive to attain predetermined aims

during a specified time by providing pre structured knowledge to

children through set methods of teaching. The purpose is to achievemental development of children entering school. According to Prof.

Drever, Education is a process in which and by which knowledge, character and behaviour of the young are shaped and moulded.

In its wider sense, education is the total development of the

personality. In this sense. Education consists of all those experiences, which affect the individual from birth till death. Thus, education is

that process by which an individual freely develops his self accordingto his nature in a free and uncontrolled environment. According to S. S.Mackenzie, In the wider sense, education is a process that goes on

throughout life, and is promoted by almost every experience in life.

A good education system is fundamental to a nation and for a nation

like India which is growing, it is of paramount importance to reflect on

our present education system and incorporate sustainable changes in it,

to make it compatible with the global dynamism.

    Education Pattern :-

    Current Scenario -

Indian education system has always been inspired from its historical

backgrounds which relate way back thousands and thousands year ago,

and includes the Puranas, the Vedas. Presently the education system in

India comprises of pre-primary, primary, secondary and senior

secondary education which is followed by higher education. Pre-primary

is the kindergarten, primary is the middle school and secondary is the

high school. Higher secondary education is up to 12th standard and

then one can pursue his further studies with graduation or post-

graduation level. Specific curriculum is designed for kids which includes

all the subjects that are been specified. Additionally there are extra-

curricular activities which kids can opt for though not compulsorily.

Moreover sports too form an essential part of the curriculum, but only

children who are selected get to avail the opportunity. Though the

curriculum has improvised lately, with more and more attention been

paid to activities and overall the practical evaluation of the kid which

relates to projects and day to day evaluation and less importance isbeen given to theory and written exams. Overall education in India is

    all about :

    - Preparing children to read and absorb

    - Is more about memorizing with study materials.

    - Is all about academic performance.

    - Have large classes with at least more than 50 students overall.

(Though nowadays the ration of students per class has changed

  • 7/27/2019 strategic management on education system

    6/11

    considerably)

    - Academic excellence achieves more preference than sports or other

    overall achievement.

    - Teachers hold great value and respect. They gain more respect from

    students as well as parents.

The system lacks personality development lessons, moral and ethical

    teaching.

Indias education system looks at commercial gains only and studentsare trained to look at their monetary future. The curriculum is also

built around clearing an exam and getting into particular professions.

Various Boards such as ICSE, CBSE for matching the International

Standards are been set up. State Board is gradually losing its value &

there are more opportunities for higher boards. The fees charged by

ICSE & CBSE Board schools is much more as compared to State Board

schools and becomes unaffordable for some. Here again comes an issue

of status, that my child will study in that school whereas there in

    nothing different taught there.

Now-a-days, day boarding is another new set up. Both the working

parents have no option but to leave their child in these day-boarding

activity where they will even learn n play. An other side consequence of

this is that there would be growing differences between parents & the

    child.

Overall, there is high competition- among institutions for creating a

brand name.among students to succeed and handle parental pressure.

Government institutions are not equipped in terms of infrastructure

and faculty and their quality has been suffering. The better

government institutions cannot accommodate the vast number of

students who are seeking to get into them. So the need for the privatesector comes in. They are filling the gap, but, at the same time many of

the private institutions take advantage of the situation and charge high

fees. There are very good students in rural areas but they cant afford

    good education today.

Our Education System Is Only Focused On Exams. Knowledge Is Not A

Priority. The present education system does not prepare a child forlife; rather, it prepares him for an exam. It is based on a premise that

needs to be challenged that is getting outstanding grades is the

secret of a successful life.. Thus, the present education system

unfortunately leaves behind the millions of average children with an

incredible potential, but who are paralysed by the fear of "failure".

Getting good grades is not a problem but allowing grades to dictate

one's life is. This defeats the whole purpose of education which ismeant to build and not destroy.

Corruption is rampant at institutions as well as regulatory bodies and

seats are today sold for a lot of money. This is because private

institutions spend a lot of money to set up infrastructure and they try

to get that back in any wayscrupulous and unscrupulous. This is

something that needs to be totally weeded out.

Due to reservation an incompetent person can reach to higher level but

fail to deliver the results. Who would like to be operated by an

incompetent doctor who got his degree because of reservation, not

    because of his/her skills.

It makes students corrupt and teaches them only indulgence and self-

centeredness. The aim of this system has become to make moneyfor the owners of the institutes and in turn this education also makes

youth who are hungry for indulgence, power and money. They blindlyfollow western styles and culture.

For these youth, earning money is the only goal of the life and theironly motivational force is money. They want to go abroad and earn

money and stay there forever. These youths perceive the education as

    a means of making money.

Childrens have to carry weighty school bag more than there 50% body

weight. Early morning students go school at 7 am return at 2 pm, thaneat food and do homework or go tution 4pm return at 6pm, if some

homework has been given by the tution teacher too they finish it after

8pm, where is the life or play time for them..??

So who is at fault for this mess ?

Those regulating and those making policies are equally responsible. If

the system has deteriorated to this level where learning has been

substituted by a race to clear an examination, regulators and

policymakers are to blame for not acting on time to correct this

anomaly. Its also not enough to have rules and regulations, it is

important how they are implemented. Government bodies are not

controlling institutions. That should become a priority. Also, for good

institutions that are promoting real learning, there should be no

    interference.

  • 7/27/2019 strategic management on education system

    9/11

Whats the solution ? How can we put the system in order ?

One way to do this is through public-private partnership. It hassucceeded in many sectors, so why not in education ? The private

sector can develop the institutions and provide infrastructure and the

government can build the curriculum and run them. In fact,

policymakers, professionals and the public should come together with

an aim to build good educational institutions. It is good to have as many

universities as possible, because many students do not get an

opportunity to get into good colleges. But the government should have astrict control on every aspect, like infrastructure, faculty, facilities

and curriculum, right from the time they are set up. There should be a

periodic accreditation system where once every two years institutions

seek accreditation and the regulatory bodies check if all norms are

being followed, for its often seen that once a sanction comes through,

institutions openly flout norms.Teachers must perceive children as seeds to be nurtured and not as

clay to be moulded. They must act as gardeners and not as potters.

This attitude must change and if it does so would the education

system. It is essential that education should be based on application

and intelligence instead of trying to test memory of knowledge.

Memory doesn't have much relevance in today's times given the volume

of information which is available on the internet. It is the applicationof information that matters and be tested.

The education system must encourage children to imagine and invent

and not reinvent the same wheel. Each child's imagination is different

  • 7/27/2019 strategic management on education system

    10/11

and, therefore, he has to be guided correctly to choose his occupation

    in life.

Our present education system lacks practicality and relevance. It's

time for the educationists to instill some life in the system by

connecting classroom lectures with real-life experiences. For example,

students must be taught the management of money and people because

nobody in practical life can escape management of money and

particularly in the current era which is full of new challenges.

In order to make sure that no deserving candidate is deprived of

education, government should take steps to impart free education, freetraining instead of reservation.

The educator should guide the child according to the abilities and

powers he observes in it. Proper guidance in the field of interest wouldhelp him nurture & succeed in his feild.

Children must be taught to go beyond religion, region and language. Our

current endeavor must be to create 'One India' transcending allparochial barriers. Only then our children would grow up to be sensible, sensitive and responsible global citizens.

Practical knowledge must also be given equal importance. They must be

taught not to chase Grade A and instead be taught that it's one's

    attitude that determines success.

Healthy competiton must exist but there should be no parentalpressure. Infact, parents must encourage their child, help them know

their field of interest and support them grow in their field.

  • 7/27/2019 strategic management on education system

    11/11

Education must not only be used as a source of making money by going

abroad. Instead, there is a greater scope of development for thecountry if the same knowledge source is being used here itself.

Day-Boarding schools may create a difference between parents & thechild. But, the child should be the taught the value of the relations andtaught to respect not only their parents but every individual which

would help in a great way in social development.

Scrupulous and unscrupulous ways of corruption should be stopped by

institutions. They should understand their moral responsibilities

towards the society and infact contribute to quality education.

The lifestyle of entire day school-school to classes-then homework

may have an mental effect & lead to stress. Bags should not be loaded

with books, infact a common book for all subjects would reduce back

problems. It should be kept in mind that, one can excel in many ways

not just academically but also through sports.

Technological advances may also add up in setting up a better futurefor the education system. E-learning is one of those forms.

Networking, internet would help in long distance and easy learning,

    quick access to information.
