REAL ALIENS, SPACE BEINGS, AND CREATURES FROM OTHER WORLDS [vii]

Ricardo Pustanio

Ricardo Pustanio is an enduring icon in the world of New Orleans Mardi Gras floatdesign and local artistry. Today his phenomenal creative talents are witnessed by thou-sands upon thousands of locals and tourists who throng the streets of New Orleanseach year to catch a glimpse of one of the oldest and most prestigious parades of theseason, the Krewe of Mid-City. According to Ricardo, “The best is still to come!”

Born in New Orleans, Ricardo is the third son of local golfing legend Eddie“Blackie” Pustanio, a well-known icon of the sport. When Ricardo was baptized, thefamous “Diamond Jim” Moran was hailed as his godfather and all the major golfingpros who visited the elder Pustanio at his City Park Golf Course digs bounced littleRicardo on their knees at one time or another.

Like nearly every child brought up in the city of New Orleans, Ricardo wastaught by his parents to enjoy the pageantry and revelry of the great old-line MardiGras parades. These halcyon Mardi Gras days of his youth were Ricardo’s first taste ofthe passion that would become the artistic inspiration of his later career. During the1960s Ricardo’s entries won first place awards and rode with the King of Mid-Citythree years in a row: a true precursor of things to come.

The winner of many art competitions throughout his life, his earliest prize-win-ning work was created while Ricardo was still in Kindergarten. From an early age,Ricardo’s works were distinguished with prizes and praise. Many are now in private artcollections in New Orleans and across the United States.

Ricardo’s special style has been very visible in his work on numerous backdrops anddisplays for the 1984 New Orleans World’s Fair; several of his original pieces from thatFair have garnered high prices at auctions throughout the United States and Europe.

Ricardo served Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carré as technical director for its 1992to 1993 season, during which he contributed his considerable artistic talents to thecreation of scenery and backdrops for the season’s major productions, including WestSide Story and The Baby Dance, for which he created a giant sixty-foot by thirty-footpâpier-maché pyramid, one of the highlights of the season. Ricardo’s set designs for the

productions of King Midas and the Golden Touch and The Snow Queen wonhim numerous awards.

In 1992 Ricardo began his long association with William Crumb and theChildren’s Educational Theatre. His work on scenery and backdrops has touredwith the company in thirteen major productions across the United States, andhe continues to contribute his talents to the organization to this day. Ricardohas also donated his time and talent to a number of nonprofit organizations, including the Save Our Lake Foundation and the March of Dimes.

Ricardo displayed his talent with scenic design in some of the best-known films produced in his area, including Angel Heart, starring MickeyRourke; The Big Easy, starring Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin; Anne Rice’sInterview with the Vampire, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt; and mostrecently in the much-anticipated A Love Song for Billy Long, which stars JohnTravolta and was filmed in historic New Orleans.

Ricardo has conceptualized and designed numerous book covers andillustrations for major works of science fiction and fantasy: he was voted BestNew Artist of the Year at World Cons held in New Orleans and in Amsterdam,

Holland. Ricardo has also illustrated children’s books, created portraits and artwork forprivate clients across the United States and in Europe, and has to his credit three origi-nal action comic books, the illustration and design of the long-running InternationalMiddle Eastern Dancer magazine, and several decks of personalized Tarot cards.

Reflecting on his artist achievements, Ricardo says: “I have paid my dues manytimes over the years and I am always in a constant state of expectation: I can’t wait forthe next challenge, the next thing to approach me. I am probably most proud of mywork with the Krewe of Mid-City in recent years, because they have allowed me anunlimited palette to create with: the only limit is my imagination, and as you see, thathas never had any limits!”

Ricardo Pustanio’s hands have been busy creating artworks that have broughtjoy and pleasure to thousands of people over the years. It is no wonder that has beennamed one of The Hardest Working Mardi Gras Artists in the City of New Orleansand in the history of Mardi Gras design.

Bill Oliver

Artist Bill Oliver is also a musician, composer, and award-winning songwriter. His music is sometimes reflective and moody, and his compositions, like his art, often act as “sound photographs” that capture a moment of lifeand freeze it in time for further contemplation—even if that moment of con-templation involves a vampire, zombie, UFO visitor, or a werewolf.

Oliver resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he has nourisheda life-long interest in the paranormal, UFOs, the metaphysical, and all thingsesoteric that stems from many personal experiences. His enthusiasm for pur-suing the unknown brought him into personal contact and interview oppor-tunities with experiencers in all aspects of the paranormal. These encountershave had significant influences on much of Bill’s work.

Brad Steiger first became familiar with Oliver’s exciting artwork when the Cana-dian won the Christmas Art contest on the Jeff Rense Program in 2005. In the art con-test for Halloween 2006, Bill won honorable mention.

As the two men became better acquainted, Steiger was honored to learn that hehad been one of Oliver’s boyhood heroes with his work on the paranormal, the eso-teric, and things that go bump in the night.

“To be reading one of Brad’s classic books one day and being asked to do some artfor one of his new books another is truly paranormal,” Oliver said.

Alyne Pustanio

Folklorist and occultist Alyne Pustanio is a New Orleans native whose rootsgo deep into the local culture. It is from that proverbial “gumbo” that shedraws her inspiration for most of her tales of terror and fascination.

A descendant of Portuguese and Sicilian immigrant families who tracetheir ancestry to European Gypsies, Alyne was exposed to the mysteries ofthe occult at an early age. Two great-grandmothers were gifted and sought outmediums, and another relative is a verified psychic. Alyne, however, creditsher mother—an avid spiritualist—with inspiring her life-long interest in thesupernatural and unexplained.

These interests, combined with her avocations in folklore and history, result in a validity and passion that is immediately obvious in all her writings.Learn more at www.hauntedamericatours.com.

As established authors and lecturers in the field of the paranormal and UFOresearch, each week we receive email that brings eyewitness accounts of individ-

uals who claim that they have had encounters with extraterrestrials. While suchclaims have become commonplace to us during the decades that we have been seri-ously investigating the UFO phenomenon, it is a bit more startling when we receivealleged eyewitness accounts of aliens working side by side with human scientists in aco-operative effort to advance our space program and our civilization. Some individu-als have told us that our scientists have been able to incorporate alien technology intosome of our most cutting-edge aircraft and space vehicles under the guidance of theextraterrestrial visitors who oversee the technical wizardry. Many of our informantsprovide what appear to be authentic credentials and resumés and claim to be person-ally familiar with ETs working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) and at secret underground facilities.

Such interstellar cooperation is said to have been going on since soon after theUFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. Some say that humans would neverhave been able to get to the moon by 1969 if it hadn’t been for the technological assis-tance of the extraterrestrials who were working among them at NASA. Informantsclaim many other benefits of alien technology have trickled down to hundreds of civil-ian applications, from transistors to computers.

Some of the aliens (we are told by those who claim to have had face-to-faceencounters) are tall, blond, very human in appearance, and are nicknamed “theNordics.” Others that are small in stature with big bug eyes, oversized skulls, and gray-ish skin are referred to as “the Grays.” And then there are those who appear as thoughthey are basically reptilian, a species of highly intelligent serpents. Some experiencersspeak of encounters with robot-like beings or grotesque monsters.

On the less benevolent side, there are unpleasant accusations of alien abduc-tions, cattle and human mutilations, and missing time experienced by UFO abductees.Frightening accounts of being taken on board an extraterrestrial vehicle and beingsubjected to painful physical examinations, including forced sexual relations, havebeen reported by abductees. Late night talk shows fill the airways with reports of

hybrid and mutant children and stories of adult men and women being left with mys-terious scars after being kidnapped by UFOnauts. Some researchers assert that thealiens have instituted an extensive program to produce alien-human hybrids to popu-late a new Earth controlled by extraterrestrials.

The late Dr. J. Allen Hynek, formerly the head of the department of astronomyat Northwestern University, served in the official capacity of scientific advisor to theU.S. Air Force on its Project Blue Book study of UFOs for more than twenty years.During the course of his investigations, Dr. Hynek devised a “UFO Classification Sys-tem” that continues to be widely used: Close Encounters of the First Kind indicates aUFO observed at close range; Close Encounters of the Second Kind refers to a UFOleaving behind physical evidence; and Close Encounters of the Third Kind meansthere is interaction between a human and an occupant of a UFO.

When Project Blue Book was discontinued by the Air Force in 1969, Dr. Hynekestablished the nonprofit Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) in Evanston, Illinois, in1973. In 1985 Dr. Hynek founded the Center for UFO Research in Scottsdale, Ari-zona. It was there that Sherry served as Dr. Hynek’s publicist and assisted him inresearching and interviewing UFO contactees. Together, they were in the process ofdeveloping a motion picture and a television series based on his investigations of theUFO enigma. Sherry states that by the time of Dr. Hynek’s death in 1986 he hadreceived over 80,000 UFO reports from over 161 countries.

A December 1996 poll conducted by a magazine of politics and contemporaryissues published by John F. Kennedy, Jr. found that fifty-five percent of Americansbelieve that life exists on other planets. Seventy-nine percent stated their contentionthat extraterrestrials have visited Earth in the last 100 years; seventy percent wereconvinced that the government is covering up the truth about UFOs.

In July 1997, the fiftieth anniversary of the UFO crash at Roswell, CNN andTime magazine took a poll that indicated that eighty percent of Americans think thegovernment keeps the wraps on extraterrestrial visitation. The same poll revealed thatthirty-five percent expect aliens to appear “somewhat human”; sixty-four percentbelieve that aliens have made contact with humans; thirty-seven percent accept thetestimony of those who claim to have been abducted.

In a November 2005 Gallup Poll survey, twenty-four of Americans believe thatETs have visited Earth in our prehistory; fifty-one percent of men believe that UFOsare here now; and forty percent of women accept the reality of extraterrestrial visitors.

In 2010, the internationally respected and acclaimed scientist Stephen Hawk-ing suggested that extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist—but we should avoidany contact. Hawking suggests: “Alien life is almost certain to exist in many otherparts of the universe: not just in planets, or even floating in interplanetary space.”

The universe, Hawking points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containinghundreds of millions of stars. Earth is unlikely to be the only planet where life hasevolved.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone makes thinking about aliens per-fectly rational,” Hawking said.

REAL ALIENS, SPACE BEINGS, AND CREATURES FROM OTHER WORLDS[xiv]

Introduction

He issues a note of warning that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resourcesand then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life mightdevelop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in mas-sive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advancedaliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever plan-ets they can reach.”

Hawking concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little toorisky,” adding: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as whenChristopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for theNative Americans.”

A Reuters worldwide poll conducted in April 2010 discovered the astonishingfigure that twenty percent of Earth’s population believes that aliens are here now,“already in our midst.” This survey included India, China, Europe, the United States,England, and Canada.

Today, in 2011, some UFO research groups claim the numbers have risen to thehundreds of thousands—others claim millions.

There are several theories about the UFOnauts’ actual place of origin and theirtrue identity. Every investigator, regardless of how open-minded he or she may hopeto be, has a favorite location, whether physical or ethereal, for the agents of the appar-ently universal and timeless UFO phenomenon. Generally, these arguments are dis-tilled to the central issue of whether the UFO intelligences are essentially nonphysi-cal entities from an invisible realm in another dimension, or physical beings who havethe advanced technology to travel over what we consider impossible distances in amethod of transport at the present time completely unknown to our science and tech-nology.

Perhaps both theories are correct. We may be confronted by both kinds of intel-ligence in our spiritual, intellectual, biological, and evolutionary processes.

Or we may be dealing with an intelligence that has a physical structure so total-ly unlike ours that it presents itself in a variety of guises, and employs invisibility, materialization, and dematerialization at different times in order to accomplish its goalof communication with our species.
