The Official Voice of Straight Chiropractic in New Jersey

Chiropractic IntegrityBy Patrick Smith, D.C. • www.chiropatrickenver.com

The survival of chiropractic is dependent upon integrity. We must be consistent with what we say and in our actions. We owe it to chiropractic past, present, and future to continually study and refine the message of chiropractic. A chiropractor without integrity will surely exploit the outcomes of the adjustment for his or her gain.

Chiropractic does not get sick people well. It takes both integrity and resolve to tell this message. It also asks the chiropractor to remove their ego from outcome. If you have delivered the adjustment and reduced or corrected subluxation, your job is finished successfully. I believe our troubles exist in making this concept applicable to the public especially in a competitive market where telling a sick person that chiropractic can make them well often has positive effects for the chiropractor (at least financially). Are you practicing with integrity when you treat a condition and allow the person to leave without ever knowing they will surely die earlier should they continue to have subluxation?

How do we make chiropractic applicable in a symptom based society? Again, we must go back to integrity. Are you talking to people? Are you telling them about chiropractic? Integrity demands consistency in action and voice. A lot of chiropractors don’t like to walk around and talk to people.

They somehow feel that they are trying to sell them on something. But, this is real life stuff we are dealing with. The chiropractic message can and does save lives. While medicine deals with treating disease the job of healing is that of the body and innate. Chiropractic never fails if the chiropractor adjusts, reduces and corrects subluxation. If we accomplish that, we eliminate subluxation that inhibits a person’s ability to function well. Are you acting with integrity by not sharing this message?

Integrity will keep chiropractors practicing and chiropractic patrons in our office. Barriers exist for both the chiropractor and chiropractic patron. I spent the better part of a decade mixing. I was chewed up and spit out of several management companies. One thing these companies all had in common was creating barriers for people to get regular chiropractic care. Society Vertebral Subluxationization: the Process.By Joseph F. Donofrio, D.C. • [email protected]

A Letter from the Editor

In today’s world of instant gratification, most folks have come to expect broken things to be fixed in one day. If it cannot be fixed then it is thrown away and replaced with a new one, immediately, no delay, no inconvenience. Not a beat missed! These same attitudes enter our offices and expect the same result from us. “I’m broken, fix me. I’m leaving for vacation in three days.”

Unfortunately we add to our own burden with some of the concepts and words (yes, words DO matter) we use when explaining to the public what we do. We say, ‘You have a fall on the ice, a fender bender, bend over the wrong way and “BAM”, a vertebral subluxation is created. Well now you need to come into the office so we can “turn on the power,” reconnect you, ”flip the switch,” correct the VS, etc.’ We make the creation of a VS sound like a singular happening and its correction instantaneous as well.

In reality, the creation of a vertebral aubluxation probably begins with a small sub-clinical injury to some paraspinal ligaments or tendons during the birth process (forceps, guiding the rotation of the shoulders through the birth canal, etc.), exacerbated by falling from the changing table at age one and further aggravated by falling while learning to walk. What’s next? Falling off your bike? Contact sports? getting beat up by the class bully? Hell night when you pledged Kappa Phi Omega? We could go on, but you get the idea. Dozens, perhaps hundreds of subliminal traumas until the VS finally produces a disturbance in nervous energy flow in a spinal nerve root or the cord. Ahh yes finally DIS--EASE rears its ugly head after 20 or 30 or 40 of those sub-clinical “boo-boos.”

Enter the Chiropractor complete with white hat and white stallion, yelling “turn on the power” or “lets fix that VS and let the healing flow.” We are then shocked that the practice members’ expectations are so unrealistic. We need to return our thinking to

I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” As I reflected on every message from the weekend and I really thought about the essence of the DE Movement and the message behind it all, this scripture said much more about Dr. Sid than all of his incredible accomplishments.

The absolute core of everything he taught and did throughout most of his life revolved around The Principles of Chiropractic being delivered with LOVE.

Sure, Our Principles are powerful enough to stand on their own but without Love they are as a “resounding gong or a clanging cymbal” to the practitioner that attempts to proclaim them. In a landscape that’s become so full of scripts to memorize and the art of scientifically communicating with people for greatest desired effect, Dr. Sid gave us the missing ingredient that would turn mere words into Transformational Authority.

He taught us how painstaking preparation would equip us to face the battles ahead of us.

He taught us that persistency alone is omnipotent. He taught us above all that without Love, we were nothing.

The lasting purpose of giving, loving and serving out of our own abundance was the fuel that kept

the mighty flame of his life and accomplishments burning brightly and powerfully, forever searing onto the Chiropractic profession and the planet, a blazing trail that will last as long as time.

The one ingredient that made this weekend’s DE, as well as all the others, so very different than any other event that I’ve ever been to in Chiropractic was the palpable and indescribable Love that filled the room.

It was The Love Dr. Sid created through his life’s work as well as the Love that will be available to be experienced by generations of Chiropractors that haven’t even been born yet. It will be celebrated quarterly for years and years to come. It will forever be a way to better understand Dr. Sid and his legacy.

Although Dr. Sid may be gone from his earthly vessel, the spirit of love he has provided will never diminish but will multiply year after year.

I just returned from a powerful DE weekend and a memorial for one of Chiropractic’s greatest warriors of all time, Dr. Sid E. Williams.

The weekend was packed with people honoring Dr. Sid’s life and sharing testimonies of his impact on their offices, families and their lives.

I collaborated in writing an entire eulogy type message with the help of my good friend Matt Alvord, but I realized as the weekend progressed, that it didn’t really say what I had hoped it would.

As I took in the weekend, I realized that I could use more than 500 words just to list Dr. Sid’s accomplishments. That’s been done many times since his passing and rightfully so. As I woke up at 5:15 this morning and took in some Scripture, I read a verse that completely changed the tone of what I felt compelled to say. My previous eulogy seemed boring and without the kind of real LIFE that I thought it should possess. As I opened up the pages of my “Breakfast for the Heart and Soul”, I came to Corinthians 13:1-3 that says,

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love,

PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES

What is the focus of a straight chiropractor? That is certainly a question worth asking.  The focus is completely on the correction of the vertebral subluxation and the explanation of the detrimental effects of these subluxations and how to get them corrected.

The GSCS continues to promote the subluxation correction practice and its practitioners.  The GSCS was founded on a need by its originators to separate from the other movements who were adding or taking away from these objectives.

I have heard it said that chiropractors may do other things but it is not chiropractic. The problem with this is that the public gets confused. They equate anything done in a chiropractic office by a chiropractor as part of chiropractic.Straight chiropractic is not all things natural as some would have chiropractic to be.  Straight chiropractic is the practice of the correction of vertebral subluxations because they are a detriment to the full expression of life. I know everyone that comes into our office may never fully understand that but that certainly does not mean we should not try.

I hope to see you this year at our upcoming events and convention.  Thank you for being a part of something great.

Sincerely,

Jay Yuhas, DCJay Yuhas, D.C., President

barriers to the next Reggie, Sid, or JoeD.Chiropractic patrons biggest barrier are fees. Our ego that tells us our

adjustment is worth X amount of money will only keep potential patrons from our offices. The inability to pay X should never keep us from seeing someone. Integrity demands consistency of actions. Yes, we are all business people and I understand we need to put food on our plate, but we are chiropractors first. Everything else is Mickey Mouse. If our goal is to bring chiropractic to as many people as possible, nothing should stand in the way of placing someone on your table. Our actions lead to our goals and they are only accomplished with integrity.

Integrity won’t allow our message to change. Chiropractic doesn’t need to change. We don’t need to diagnose, treat or prescribe. Chiropractic has existed for over 100 years due to integrity. Our message is simple. Straying from the simplicity that is chiropractic will surely lead to its demise. Integrity will not allow that to happen. Be consistent with your speech and actions. The world is waiting.

was depending on me. I had to go in to those rooms for the next two hours and literally put all my energy into focusing on what God put me on earth to do. Somehow I gathered the strength to pull it off. The following is part of the letter I carried with me in the back of my mind and across my shoulders as I went in to care for each of the patients:

April 20, 2009Re: claims reviewDear Dr. Korsen, As part of our health insurance company of Rhode Island’s continuing efforts to address health care costs and fulfill our fiduciary duty to our members, we periodically conduct file reviews of claims submitted by and paid to both our participating and non-participating providers. On March 11, 2009 a meeting was held at your office…yada yada …

Our findings have identified that the correct reporting for these services would be the use of CPT code 97039, (unlisted modality). However, this service is not medically necessary as there is lack of published peer-reviewed literature to support its efficacy. The use of CPT code 97012, (application traction, and mechanical) is considered an intentional

How to Make the Switch to a Cash PracticeBy Jay Korsen, D.C. • www.backtohealth.org

In January of 2009, I received a phone call from a well known “health” insurance company. The man on the other end of the phone seemed nice enough. He wanted to come to my office to have a “friendly chat” in a few weeks. I called him back later and asked him if he wanted to come the next day or two. What he said shook me to the core. “We can not assemble the team of people we need to be there that quickly.” What the heck did that mean? I found out over the next few months as the meeting was scheduled and re-scheduled because they did not want the meeting videotaped and they thought it was “odd” that I wanted an attorney present. To save time, I will condense what happened over the next few months just to say I hired an ERISA law expert, a team of attorneys, contacted the local police, a private investigator and the FBI. I covertly audiotaped the meeting, which was anything but a friendly chat and waited.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2009 I opened a large package sent to us by the insurance company. I skimmed through the front page and my heart stopped. Air would not fill my lungs as hard as I tried. I didn’t want to be a chiropractor anymore. Waves of nausea passed through me. “How could this be?” I asked myself. And then I remembered I had another two hours of patients to see. I need to pull myself together and put my game face on. I was just staring at a surreal group of numbers on a page. The patient in the next room

misrepresentation of the service.

As a result, our health insurance company has identified an overpayment in the amount of $412,951.93. This amount represents services of mechanical traction rendered from March 2003 through April 2009. A breakdown of the overpayment is highlighted in red within the enclosed spreadsheet.

Please respond within 10 days from receipt of this letter to discuss repayment options. If you have any further questions regarding this matter, you may contact me.

So, I filed an appeal. For having the audacity to file this appeal, they told me that I now owed them an additional $98,677.85 for the co-pays and deductibles. I went to the media and appeared on the nightly news to tell the world what they had done to me. This resulted in a lawsuit filed by them against me for defamation among other things. I went back on the news the next night to show the lawsuit to the world and what they were attempting to do to me. I also contacted the FBI, handed over all my information and became a whistle blower.

They were taking 100 percent of my payments on current patients to pay off the fictitious debt they said I owed them so I was going broke very quickly. I had to do something and do it quickly. I cut my staff down to a skeleton crew, brought my overhead down as low as I possibly could and I switched from a

the concept of process, which infers TIME.

The vertebral subluxation most likely occurred over a period of years and possibly decades. The act of correction is going to require a concomitant period of time steady, regular and methodical. As we return our thinking to the long-term, to the process of both creation AND correction, we begin communicating that mindset to our members. We jar them into the reality of the long-term natural order of things, lower their expectations as it regards to time and distance traveled and thus, produce better compliance and more satisfaction with you and Chiropractic care.

A vertebral subluxation is not an on-off or toggle switch and correcting it is not as simple as turning on the power. Seems to me that we need to remember that: “there is no process that does not require time.”

Cash Practice Continued from page 5

nearly 100 percent insurance practice to a 100 percent cash practice quite literally on a Tuesday afternoon. In the morning people were paying a co-payment, in the afternoon, they were paying cash for their services. This is not what I suggest for you as you make the switch to a cash practice.

So here is what I want you to learn from this. If you accept insurance as payment for your services, it is not a question of “if” you will be audited by the insurance company, but “when.” Don’t wait for this to happen…please! Make the preparation to change NOW.

Over the past four years since appearing on television, I get calls every week from all sorts of doctors that are being audited and asked for money they simply do not owe for everything from seeing people too often or too much to not taking detailed enough notes.

How do you make the switch? Dump all the dead weight from your office. Get lean! Pare your overhead down as much as possible. Get straight with your philosophy. Start talking about subluxation with passion. Prepare a strong chiropractic orientation class and give it to all new patients to explain what it is you do at least twice a week. Correct subluxations only. Remember, if you chase two rabbits, both will escape. That is, if you try to be a PT, a nutritionist, an orthotic salesman, a pillow store AND a chiropractor you will not be as successful. You need to

check and adjust at least 200 people a week to make a cash practice work if you have a VERY lean office.

You don’t need to pay some guru to teach you how to become a cash practice! There are lots of free information sources on how to make it happen out there. There are entire chat groups dedicated to showing you how to do it for free. I put up a Facebook page called “Chiropractic Cash Only Practice,” which chronicled my successes and failures as I learned through the school of hard knocks how to run a cash practice. Other doctors are documenting their individual journys in their offices on there as well. You can ask questions on the page and get free honest answers. Ask chiropractors who are running cash practices and you will find they are eager to help you for free. Attend NB and DE! We must be, now more than ever before, a Band of Brothers. We must go back to pure principled chiropractic in order to serve the masses of people who need us.

By eliminating insurance from your practice and becoming the principled chiropractor you were meant to be, you will both avoid the inevitable insurance audit nightmare and fulfill your true purpose in life.

Wishing you success in your transition to a life of passion and freedom in your cash practice!

To Fees or Not to FeesTo mention fees or not to mention

fees when it comes to marketing and advertising, that is the question.

When I first opened my own office five years ago, I had the idea that mentioning fees in my marketing and advertising was not professional. So I had no intentions of mentioning them until I had a visitor in my office that completely changed how I looked at it. I’ve found that mentioning my fees has been one of the biggest practice builders for my office, other than direct referrals, over the last five years. So here’s how it happened; I was paid a visit by a phone book advertiser when I first opened trying to sell me advertising. I went through the consultation with him, because I refuse to do business with anyone who doesn’t understand what I am about and how my office is different than the majority of the chiropractors out there. After going through the

consultation with him, he decided that he wanted to get his spine checked. Afterwards, he took some of my literature and returned the next day with his advertising proposal. He had my fees listed in the advertisement. My first thought was that I can’t list my fees in an advertisement, but thankfully I had just reread the two books, Practice Building and Case Management by Joseph Strauss, D.C. before opening my practice. I remembered the section on the Unique Service Proposition (USP) in Joe’s Practice Building book and realized that my fee system is one of my USPs. For those that haven’t read the book and those that can’t remember what the USP is, I’ll explain it briefly. The Unique Selling (Service) Proposition was a term coined by Jay Abraham, a famous marketing expert, who defined it as “the distinct appealing idea that sets your business apart from every other competitor.” Joe relates it

to Chiropractic by writing, “The USP is what sets you apart from all other Chiropractors or at least the ones in your community. It is why the patient should come to you when deciding to go to a Chiropractor. It should be about your office and you, not about Chiropractic in general.”

After realizing that my fee system was part of my USPs, I had no qualms about mentioning it in my marketing and advertising. Now let me clarify, I didn’t come up with my fee system to be the cheapest guy in town or to under cut other Chiropractors in town. I came up with my fee system to be affordable so everyone in my community can experience the benefits of regular Chiropractic care on a lifetime basis, just as my family and I receive year after year.

I would also like to suggest that if you are running a Membership or Box

That’s right, Britney is more prone to infections and sickness, gets the flu more often and at different times than Abby.  So, when Britney has the flu, Abby is not only not sick, she’s complains of being bored!  There’s only one problem with this:  They share the exact same circulatory system.  How is any of this even remotely possible according to the well-accepted medical theory that health is an outside-in endeavor and specifically that microbes are to blame for all of this?

Medical theories are Chiropractic histories and medical mysteries are Chiropractic certainties.  This is because according to the germ theory of disease, it should be impossible for only one of these girls to get sick when the other is not.  BJ Palmer once said that if the germ theory were correct,

Twin EnginesThere are two sisters that grew up

about half an hour west of Minneapolis and they just graduated from a local college.  They have been on the cover of Time magazine as children and are currently filming the second reality TV show of their lives, just for being themselves.  I doubt they have ever been to a Chiropractor, much less know anything about Chiropractic, but they literally embody and exemplify some of the most fundamental principles of our philosophy and all but prove that medicine is wrong about some of their most beloved and core beliefs.  They didn’t have a choice in the matter and preferred that people wouldn’t stare, but they simply can’t help being one of only a handful of dicephalic parapagus twins on the planet.

In the case of Abby and Britney Hensel, that means they are the same

in their lower half, but are basically two completely different people from the navel up.  So this means double the organs, personalities, spines and nervous systems.  These girls are essentially two different people in one connected body and they are the modern day version of BJ’s Masha and Dasha.

Abby is better at math, Britney is better at writing.  One is afraid of heights while one is not. One likes adventure and to take charge, the other is quieter and likes to follow more.  If one is cold, it is not uncommon for the other to be warm.  In fact, when this happens, there is a usually a line down the middle of their body showing the difference between one girl’s skin turning white while the other one turns red.  To top it all off, when one gets sick, often times the other does not.

type of practice, and you have a start up that requires people to go a month or so before getting on these systems, mention the start up requirement when marketing or advertising. For example, I give people the option of receiving my care by the visit or by the month when they first enter the office. I don’t offer the Membership fee to first timers. I charge $35 for the visit ($50 for a couple) or they can choose to do an unlimited month for $150 ($200 for a couple) and have a $90 per month ($135 for a couple) as a Membership option for those that want my services on a lifetime basis. My advertisement and marketing only mention the visit and monthly fees. I’d suggest the same to those that have a similar system.

To Fees or NotContinued from page 7

I hope this helps answer the question of whether to mention office fees in marketing and advertising for your office. At this point in my career, I feel it is a no brainer. After all, if you call around you’ll find that most Chiropractors in your community can’t even answer the simple question, “How much do you charge?” because their fees are usually based upon a third-party payer. Our offices are different and our fees reflect that difference. So don’t be afraid to let people know that difference. Mentioning my office fees has been one of the largest practice building tools that I have used and it can work for your office as well.

there would be no one alive to believe it.  If we’re exposed to it, we’re supposed to get it.  If we’re not, we shouldn’t.  And we definitely can’t have half of the same body be infected with the same microbe while the other half is not.  The microbe is everywhere in the entire body or it is nowhere.  Maybe these girls just forgot to follow the advice of their MD to not touch the other so the one sister doesn’t get the other sick…

Kidding aside, our Chiropractic certainty is this:  Not only do we each have an Innate Intelligence that controls and coordinates each of our bodies, our principles honor each individual system to intelligently and uniquely respond in time and place to the exact demands required from the same environment.

Related to the Chinese proverb, not only do we not step into the same river twice, we do not respond to the same environment the same way, nor should we be expect to; It is to each of our own individual ways.  The only logical thing to do as a Chiropractor is to simply acknowledge this intelligence, honoring each of our individual perceptions to express each of our unique reactions, concerning ourselves with and only with interference to it in the form of what we specifically define as a Chiropractic subluxation.

The popular saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome” but in Chiropractic, all roads lead to HOME, and home is wherever each and every one of our Innate Intelligence’s resides;  Without any help and without any interference.
