TERRIFIC KIDS
At the end of last term the winners of the Term 1 Kiwanis Terrific Kids
Award were announced.
A Terrific Kid needs to be:
THOUGHTFUL ENTHUSIASTIC RESPECTFUL
RESPONSIBLE INFLUENTIAL FRIENDLY
IMPECCABLE CARING
These qualities align really closely with the characteristics and attitudes of
the IB Learner Profile. The characteristics we expect IB students to display
are those of a person who is an inquirer, knowledgeable, courageous, a
thinker, a communicator, open minded, balanced, principled, reflective and
caring.
The attitudes supporting these characteristics are appreciation,
commitment, confidence, cooperation, curiosity, creativity, empathy,
enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect and tolerance.
Congratulations to Myungin Kim and Dominique Van Zyl, they are
outstanding ambassadors for our school and they approach all aspects of
school life in a balanced, considerate and enthusiastic manner.
CATHY KEPA’S KOREAN EXCHANGE ADVENTURE
During the April school holidays I had the great fortune to visit South Korea
as part of the APCEIU teacher exchange program. Throughout my stay I was
in awe of this beautiful country and of all the wonderful people I met. It is
an experience I will never forget.
Mr Sim Sangoh, spent three weeks teaching at Stradbroke School in
February and living with my family in the Adelaide Hills; was my Korean
teaching partner and host. I stayed with Mr Sim, who lives on the 13th
storey of one of many apartment buildings in the city of Chechon, which is
about a three-hour drive from Seoul. Mr Sim and his wife Emma were the
most gracious, kind hosts and I thoroughly enjoyed staying with them and
their two small daughters Yun Seo and Min Seo. With Mr Sim and Emma I
learnt so much about Korean culture and history; ate the most delicious
Korean foods and travelled all over the South Korean peninsula. I really was
spoilt. The school I taught at with Mr Sim was Eosangcheon Elementary
School which is a small country school with a total of 36 students from
Kindergarten through to Year 6. It is nestled at the base of a huge mountain

range where most of the children live. Every morning two
school buses drive up into the mountains to collect the
children and then drop them off in the evening.
The schools motto of ‘dream, hope and be happy’ really
reflects the character of the school as it was a very happy
learning environment. I felt welcome the minute I arrived and
was made to feel so much at home by the delightful staff and
students, even although I only confidently spoke two words
of Korean! On arrival at the school, a huge ‘Welcome
Catherine Kepa’ banner hanging across the entrance gates
greeted me and with
every day there was
continued celebration
of my visit. While at
Eosangcheon
Elementary School I
was involved in many
and varied classroom
observations; teaching
at all year levels; staff
meetings and teacher
training sessions. Again,
I learned so much in
such a short time.
Although I found so many similarities between Korean and
Australian schools, some differences that really stood out to
me included the custom of removing outdoor shoes, leaving
them in special lockers and wearing slippers indoors (I was
always flustering around trying to get my shoes on and off
quickly but with little success); the enormous, delicious and
healthy lunches cooked and served in the school cafeteria to
all staff and students (students eat with their teacher and will
only start their meals once the teacher has had their first
spoonful of food); no bells or music when it is time for school
to start or after lunch break (children are expected to be
aware of the time and come into the classroom
independently and punctually); no cleaners for the
classrooms (the children are rostered to do this); and finally,
all teachers and children would stand up and bow to the
Principal whenever she entered the room. In fact I bowed so
deeply on my first meeting with the Principal she told Mr Sim
to tell me to relax.
To live and work in Korea has been a wonderful experience
and one that I am very grateful for. It will now act as a
catalyst for further activities between Mr Sim and myself and
students from both Stradbroke and Eosangcheon Schools.

NAPLAN
On Tuesday 9th
May, Wednesday 10th
May & Thursday 11th
May students in Year 3, 5 and 7 will sit the NAPLAN – The
National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy tests. It is
important on these days that all Year 3, 5 & 7 students are in
class and ready to begin their tests by 9.00am.
The NAPLAN tests are given Australia wide on the same day
under the same conditions and regulations. If for any reason,
parents/caregivers believe their child needs to be withdrawn
from these tests please contact Greg Johnston.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas of:
• Reading
• Writing
• Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and
punctuation)
• Numeracy.
A NAPLAN report will be issued later in the year (late term 3
or early term 4). The same report format is used for every
student in Australia.

SA PUBLIC EDUCATION AWARDS
Nominations are now open for
the SA Public Education Awards.
The SA Public Education Awards
recognise, reward and celebrate
the contributions of staff in our
public schools and preschools,
and provide the opportunity for families and the community
to show appreciation for an education professional.
People who feel appreciated are more positive about
themselves and their ability to contribute. This results in a
confident, productive workforce and the best possible
outcomes for our children and young people.
For more information on categories and eligibility, or to
nominate a staff member visit: www.decd.sa.gov.au/awards

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY
WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 19th
MAY 2017
Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously
starts talking about walking!
Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our
transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part
of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking
all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite
easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s
daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more
by:
• Walking with them the whole way to school
• If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop
and get on at the next stop
• If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away
from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps
them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart
disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It
also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe
ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Remember, Active Kids Are Healthy Kids so get planning your
own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 19 May
2017
For more information, visit www.walk.com.au
EARLY MORNING ARRIVAL
Students are allowed to start arriving at school from 8:30am.
Students who arrive before 8:30am must be booked into Kids’
Zone. Students who are on the school grounds before 8.30am
will be taken to Kids’ Zone and families will be sent an invoice.
This is duty of care issue as there are no teachers on duty
prior to 8:30am.
Classrooms will be opened at 8:40am and students may enter
the buildings to put away their bags, talk to the teacher and
get organised for the day. Music is played at 8:48am followed
by a siren at 8.50am indicating that classes are commencing
and all students need to be in their classrooms ready to start.
RESOURCE CENTRE
Thank you to families for returning books that were borrowed
for the holiday break. All books borrowed last term are now
due back and will be marked overdue on the computer
system (as loans are for two weeks only). If you need a title
extended, please bring the book into the Resource Centre so
we can re-scan it for you. We hope you enjoyed some holiday
reading.
Thank you,
Resource Centre Staff
CANTEEN
Welcome to term 2, I hope everyone enjoyed the school
holidays.
CANTEEN MENU: The term 2 and 3 menu has been added to
the Skoolbag App and the schools website. With the winter
months upon us, we have reintroduced WEDGES, PASTA
WITH BOLOGNAISE SAUCE, NUGGETS AND WEDGES PACKS (2 sizes), FISH FILLET AND WEDGES, and BURGER AND WEDGES
PACKS. We have deleted the summer items such as fruit salad
and Slushy until Term 4.
FRIDAY TREAT: We will be offering FRIED RICE as a FRIDAY
treat both 5th
May and 12th
May, over the counter at recess
$1-00 per cup or as a lunch order $4-00. (Does NOT contain
egg or bacon).
ICEBLOCK WINTER TREAT: We will be selling the "LARGE
LEMON CALIPO" and "CHOC SHAKY SHAKE" that are left over
from the movie night. $2-50 each until all sold out. These can
be included as a lunch order or over the counter.
LUNCH ORDERS: Please label all bags clearly with your child's
name and class and one item per bag. For multiple siblings,
please put ALL orders together in one class crate with the
relevant money, this is much easier for processing rather than
chasing up different rooms looking for the money. Any
change will be sent to the eldest child unless stated
otherwise.
VOLUNTEERS: If anyone would like to help in the canteen,
please pop in and add your name to the roster. We provide
you with tea, coffee, lunch and it’s a great way to meet other
parents.
Thank you, Kate Majewski, Canteen Manager

BIRWOOD FARM DAY
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE NEWS
Guest Speaker – Feresh Agahi Pizarro from the
Australian Maths and Science School
Feresh presented to the Year 5, 6 & 7s and taught us what STEM
is and what it means. STEM is an acronym for Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Some highlights of
the presentation were innovations about the following things; a
texting plant invented by Kaviya Kalyanasundaram, the no-drip
ice cream cone, the smart umbrellas, the filtering straw and the
can crusher. All of these were designed from the ASMS students.
Feresh empowered us
as she taught us the
importance of a growth
mindset that we are all
capable of by solving an
everyday problem to
help change the world.
