FRIDAY APRIL 17, 2015 www.sakaaltimes.com T he eighth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway and cricket enthusiasts have once again come together to experience the eu- phoria of T20. For the cricketers, it is a lot of hard work on the ground, but Extraaa Innings T20 Sony Max is also about entertainment. Keep- ing the entertainment quotient alive are anchors like Samir Kochhar, Gaurav Kapur, Shibani Dandekar and Archana Vijaya. Actor, model and anchor Samir has been with IPL since its inception in 2008. Gaurav, who calls himself ‘the bearded face of IPL’ has been enter- taining the crowds with his wit and humour since 2009, IPL’s second season. And glam girls Shibani Dandekar and Archana Vijaya joined the bandwagon in 2011. Here’s chatting up the energetic anchors who have been part of IPL’s successful journey: THE JOURNEY SO FAR Anchoring IPL for seven years now, Gaurav likes to take it one season at a time. “I take this tournament like one ball at a time. IPL has been a very interesting part of my life and I like the fact that the my role as an anchor is ap- preciated by the viewers. It has also become something permanent on India’s landscape and is like a family mem- ber coming home each year,” says Gaurav. This is the fourth season for Archana and she too is happy to be a part of the tournament. “It has been an in- credible journey for me and I am glad to be associated with a tournament which is viewed by millions in our country,” adds the sassy anchor. For Samir, who started with his first live television assignment with season one of IPL, it has been a great learning curve. “The journey has been fantastic so far. When IPL began, no one knew how it would shape up, but it has only grown with every passing year. The sets have become bigger and with the tournament travelling overseas, the reach has become wider too,” says Samir adding that person- ally, it has been a great expe- rience for him. “It is a great feeling to share the stu- dio with sports stars who you’ve grown up watch- ing.” Initially, Shibani had experienced some jittery moments because she’d never anchored a live show. However, she lived up to the viewers’ expectations. “It has been a great opportuni- ty, with every new sea- son throwing a new challenge that I read- ily pick up and learn from,” adds the viva- cious Shibani. FAVOURITE MOMENTS All the anchors have had lots of favourite moments, but they list a few for us. While Gaurav feels that the opening cere- mony of the tournament each year is his favourite, Archa- na fondly recalls the finals in 2012 when Shah Rukh Khan made her dance before the match. Gaurav’s already had one of his memorable mo- ments this year. “Meeting little AbRam at the home of cricket, Kolkata. I think he’s adorable,” says Gaurav. “Inter- acting with young cricketers and witnessing some nail-biting matches have been my favourite moments,” says Archana and Samir adds, “For me, anchoring live from the ground gives me a different high altogether as there is so much hap- pening at one time.” For Shibani, cricketing tips from the experts have been unforgettable. “Getting bowling les- sons from Morne Morkel and batting tips from Darren Sammy is what I would rate as my best mo- ments if I had to pick a few,” says she. CATCHY ANTHEMS IPL’s anthems always catch attention. Jump- ing Japang, the anthem for IPL 6, became very popular. However, the anchors say that this season’s anthem, India Ka Tyohaar, is what they like after Aisa Mauka from sea- son four. FRIENDS AT WORK Talking about their equation with each other, the four of them believe that they are a great team with each one support- ing the other. “We are all like a big hap- py family. Archana calls me her work husband (laughs) since we travel a lot together for assigments. We can all rely on each other, and be it in the studio or reporting live from ground, our cama- raderie shows, ” says Gaurav. “Gaurav and I are both from Delhi and we have a different equation off screen. Even other- wise, the four of us chat with each other over texts and phone calls which makes our job easier,” says Samir. F ood, fashion and music is seeing a growing number of enthusiasts who want to pursue it further and make a career out of it. However, making a career is not easy. What the youngsters need is passion and dedication, and to maximise their potential they need guidance and mentorship. To help them with mentorship, Johnnie Walker re- cently conducted Step Up, which saw a huge number of youngsters from the field of food, fashion and mu- sic interact with experts and understand the nuances and requirements of the different industries from culi- nary wizard Nikhil Chib, avante-garde designer Nikhil Thampi and musician duo Midival Punditz. The programme culminated in a grand finale where the aspirants showcased their talent to win the Best Per- former title. From live counters serving Pindi Chole to Lassi, to the staff dressed in traditional Punjabi attire, you can almost imagine yourself to be on the streets of Amritsar. In terms of food, the festival has a lot of lip-smacking dishes lined up on the buffet table. Start off with some ten- der Tandoori Chicken or tasty Bhutte Ki Tikki that is served with creamy yoghurt. For the main course, you can relish the well-known Makki Di Roti and Sarso Da Saag, or dig into a plate full of Kul- chas and Dal Makhani served with some authen- tic white butter. Creamy Phirni, Kheer, Mango Barfi and the famed Gajar Ka Halwa – all on offer for you to gorge on. Talking about the festival, Execu- tive Chef Gaurav Malhotra informs, “We have retained the homestyle cooking method for most of the dish- es that will enhance the experience. Baisakhi being the harvest festival we make sure that we provide an authen- tic experience to food lovers. To keep the food authentic, we are keeping to the original recipes and not tweaking them to suit the palate.” To experience and enjoy Baisakhi, head for The Square at Novotel Pune, Viman Nagar, for dinner at 7 pm. Besides, such platforms help showcase your talent to a larger audience. Gaurav says, “When the organisers approached us to mentor a bunch of really talented kids, we really liked the idea. The only way to grow is when more people learn.” Elaborating further, Tapan says, “When we started out in 1998, we were quite naïve and raw. We really didn’t have anyone to turn to. Says Nikhil, “I was hon- estly not expecting so much but as the show progressed, I found that the con- testants were quite talented and defi- nitely stepped up to the plate. The most challenging part was preparing a three- course meal in two hours. The com- petition was neck-to-neck which also proved that the youngsters wanted to learn a lot.
