TherearemanydifferenttypesofstormwaterBestManagementPractices(BMP’s).Somearedesignedtodealwithwaterquantityandstorestormwaterrun-offandreleaseataslowerratetoreducedownstreamfloodinganderosion,whileothersaredesignedmoreforwaterqualityandfilterpotentialpollutantsthatdrainthroughthepractice.Andthentherearesomethatdoboth!FollowingisaquicksummaryofstormwaterBMP’sthatcanbefoundonJMU’scampus.

1.Bio-retentionfilters,morecommonlyknownasraingardens,areconstructedtreatmentareasthatslowlyreleasecollectedstormwaterrun-offandfiltersgatheredpollutantsnaturallythroughplants,mulchandsoilmedia.Thereareabout33bio-retentionfiltersofvarioussizeslocatedonJMU’scampus.

2.Detention,ordrypondsareconstructedtoprovidegeneralfloodprotection,collectingstormwaterrun-offandreleasingitdownstreamataslowerratehelpingreducepossiblefloodingdownstream.Thereare11detentionpondslocatedonJMU’scampus.

3.Detentionpondscanalsobeconstructedundergroundinvaultsandworkthesameasaboveground,andgenerallygounnoticed.Mostareacollectionofconcretevaults,andthereare3undergrounddetentionsystemslocatedonJMU’scampus.

4.Green,orlivingroof,isaconstructedroofwithvegetationandsoilmediaplantedoverawaterproofmembrane.Inadditiontoreducingtheamountofrun-offleavingaproperty,thispracticealsohasadditionalbenefitssuchasthermalreductionandenergyconservation.TherearetwoinstallationsonJMU’scampus,oneofwhichisademonstrationareaatMadisonUnion.

5.Hydrodynamicseparatorsaremanufacturedstructuresthatseparatessedimentandotherpollutantsastheyflowthroughthestructure.Collectedsedimentanddebriswillthenneedtoberemovedduringmaintenancecleanings.Thereare12hydrodynamicseparatorsonJMU’scampus.

6.Landusechanges,orconservationlandscaping,istheprocessoftakinghardscapesurfacesortypical“lawns”andchangingthetypeofplantsintheareatoallowmeadowsand/oradditionaltreedensity.JMU’sHillsideProjecthastaken3.6acresofturfandmadethischange.Alsothroughoutcampus,vegetationhasbeenallowedtogrowadjacenttostreamstoprovideariparianbuffer.

7.Oil/Waterseparatorsareanundergroundtanksysteminstalledtocollectpetroleumproductsinthecaseofalargeaccidentalspill,thuspreventingtheproductfromgettingintoourlocalstreams.JMUhasoneoil/waterseparatorlocatedattheirfuelingfacility.

8.Permeablepavementallowsforhardscapessuchassidewalks,parkinglotsandroadwaysbutalsoallowsforinfiltrationofprecipitation.ThereisoneinstallationofpaversonJMU’scampuslocatedatparkinglotAnearWilsonHall.

9.Rainwaterharvestingisaprocessofcapturingstormwaterrun-offandreusingiton-site.JMUhasoneinstallationofthispracticeoncampuslocatedatWaylandHall.

10.Retention,orwetpondsworkverysimilarlytodrypondsexcepttheywillhaveapermanentpoolofwater.ThereisoneinstallationofthispracticeonJMU’scampuslocatednearISAT.

11.Sandfiltersareanothertypeofinfiltrationpracticethatworksverysimilarlytobio-retentionfiltersexceptthemediaismainlycomprisedofsandandthepracticesarenotlandscapedwiththeplantsthatarepartofbio-retentionfilters.ThereisoneinstallationofthispracticeonJMU’scampuslocatedbelowtheURECturffield.

12.Stormfiltersareanothermanufacturedfilteringdevicethatareinstalledundergroundandfiltersstormwaterasitflowsthroughthestormsewersystem.Thereare12stormfiltersinstalledonJMU’scampus.

13.Streamrestorationistheprocessofre-engineeringthestreamtoincludenaturaldesignconceptstohelpensurebankstabilizationandre-connectthestreamtothefloodplain.JMUhasrestoredapproximately3,700linearfeetofstreamthroughthecampus.

14.TreeinaBoxisanothermanufacturedpracticethatbasicallyputsaone-plantraingardeninastormdraininlet.Thiswilltreatthefirstrun-offfromastormeventwhichwilltypicallyhavethemajorityoffreshpollutantsinthedrainagearea.Thereare13treeinaboxunitsonJMU’scampus.

15.Wetlands,orinthiscaseconstructedwetlands,areanaturalbiofilterinstalledtotreatpollutantsfromstormwaterrunoff.Several“pocket”wetlandswereinstalledalongwiththestreamrestorationworkinthearboretumwhichalsoallowsforadditionalconnectiontothefloodplainandwaterstorageduringfloodingevents.
