Hello summer! The best time of year to sit back and enjoy vacations and new Disney adventures with your friends and family is here. We’re ready to relax, too, after a busy few months redesigning our newsletter. You may notice something different about the issue you hold in your hands—we’ve got a new name and a new look but still the same cool insider information—in fact, that’s why we changed our name! We’ll be bringing you all the “inside” news around Disney to help you get the most out of your card and take advantage of all the opportunities being a Cardmember brings you.

To kick things off, our fun-loving pal Lightning McQueen is back for more high-octane adventures in Disney•Pixar’s Cars 3, along with a

racetrack full of new friends. We’ll pop the hood on the movie and introduce you to some of the new characters in this issue. And if your little gearheads can’t get enough of the movie, we’ve highlighted some cool Cars 3 products you can find at Disney Store and DisneyStore.com in our “Gifts for Gearheads” Shopping Guide.

We’ve also interviewed Disney Legend, Bob Gurr, about his many contributions to Disneyland® Park. Gurr was Walt’s “go-to guy” when it came to designing transportation attractions including the beloved Autopia. You’ll be amazed at just how many vehicles this wheelmeister is responsible for.

Lightning Strikes AgainIn Cars 3, the Disney•Pixar filmmakers tell a story fueled by hope, humor and heart.

CRUZ RAMIREZ She’s the tech-savvy trainer determined to get Lightning’s career back on track.

JACKSON STORMThis fast Next-Gen racer was built to win—and he knows it.

Meet Some New Car-acters

STERLINGThis savvy business- car wants to be sure his investment in Lightning pays off.

NATALIE CERTAIN A number-cruncher, Natalie underestimates the power of determination.

MISS FRITTERDemolition Derby legend, Fritter, loves her smash ‘n’ crash life at Thunder Hollow Speedway.

Lightning McQueen first raced into the hearts of audiences around the world when Cars hit theaters in 2006. Sporty and red with a lightning bolt that would become his signature, #95 was a hotshot rookie, taking on Piston Cup champions with crazy confidence. But a lot of time has passed since Lightning McQueen won his first Piston Cup, and filmmakers at Pixar Animation Studios realized that the young and fearless rookie had grown up. The idea sparked the storyline for Cars 3, which hits theaters June 16.

“We realized early on that we wanted a film with deep relationships between Lightning and the other characters and a truly emotional story for Lightning,” says Jay Ward, Cars Franchise Creative Director. “One of the first questions we asked ourselves was ‘Where is Lightning in his career? What’s happening for him?’ He’s been racing for quite a while and he’s won a lot of Piston Cups. But he’s starting to face the same kind of challenges all star athletes face at some point in their careers. What’s next?”

Lightning (voice of Owen Wilson) has been blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, called the “Next Gens,” and he suddenly finds himself being pushed out of the sport he loves. But he’s not ready to retire. To stay in the game, he needs help from young and eager race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), plus inspiration from Lightning’s late mentor Doc Hudson, also known as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Despite some unexpected twists and turns, #95 proves he’s not through yet, and that he still has the heart of a champion!

“Cruz is really key in the story,” Ward says. She’s a top-notch trainer at the Rust-eze Training Center where Lightning goes to get back in shape following an accident. But Cruz only knows the high-tech training world, while Lightning McQueen learned under Doc’s tutelage on dirt tracks. The pair take off on a journey to reignite Lightning’s career, but they find so much more along the way.

At a point when Lightning is feeling very low and is really missing his friend and mentor, Doc, Mater wonders aloud about who trained Doc. That chance remark puts Lightning on the road to finding Smokey (voice of Chris Cooper), who was Doc’s crew chief, and three cars who knew Doc when he was a champion racer.

“At the beginning of the film, there’s something serious Lightning needs to overcome, but he finds a way to come back. Cars 3 is a true hero’s journey.”

— Jay Ward, Cars Franchise Creative Director

When you need a little retread on your tires, it also helps to have some experienced friends to give you a boost. And Lightning is lucky. In addition to his loyal Radiator Springs pals, he meets a group of veterans from Doc Hudson’s racing world back in his heyday. Each of these veterans is inspired by a real-life racing legend. “I love these characters,” Ward says. “They have a huge impact on how Lightning sees himself and his future.”

To create these memorable characters, the storytellers researched famous racers from the mid 1950s. “We were so inspired by these real-life racers,” Ward says. “We took a lot of our character cues from them.” For instance, Louise Smith, the first lady of NASCAR®, became the model for Louise “Barnstormer” Nash who beat Doc in their first three races. Junior Moon is based on Junior Johnson, a former NASCAR® racer, who really did run moonshine when not racing, and Smokey, Doc’s crew chief, is inspired by legendary racer and crew chief, Henry “Smokey” Yunik. Gruff, but kindly, Smokey helps Lightning discover what’s been inside him all along.

“Everyone who worked on Cars 3 was dedicated to creating a film that took Lightning on a journey that was not only fun and funny, but was as emotionally moving as possible,” Ward concludes. “We felt that our audiences—and Lightning—deserved that.”

If you’ve ever raced around the curves of Autopia screaming with laughter with your kids, or cruised leisurely down Main Street, U.S.A., in the gleaming 1910-style fire engine or nostalgic double-decker bus, you’ve been enjoying the creativity of wheelmeister and Disney Legend, Bob Gurr. Over the years, Gurr has developed more than 100 designs for Disney Theme Park transportation attractions ranging from Autopia and the Matterhorn Bobsleds to the Monorail and Disneyland® Park Railroad.

In 1954, when Gurr got a call asking him to come to The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, he had no idea how important that meeting would be.

“I was shown this little chassis built by someone in a local shop. I took one look

and knew exactly what that car needed to look like,” Gurr recalls. He came back several days later with sketches of a trim, sleek Ferrari perfectly proportioned for young drivers yet still comfortable for adults.

Walt Disney was aware that very small children wouldn’t be able to drive thecars, so Gurr modified two cars to look like sheriff’s vehicles complete with red lights and a siren, that a ride operator would control and drive while the kids sat in the front seat. He also designed a miniature bus to hold several kids while a ride operator drove. And with all this inspiration and development, the beginnings of Autopia was about to hit the open road.

Every new idea has its learning curves, and Autopia was no exception. The

opening day of Disneyland® Park on July 17, 1955, was hectic for Gurr who was in charge of 12 Autopia cars used in the inaugural parade. As the engines idled before the start of the parade, they continually vapor locked. “I was constantly kick-starting the cars. Once they were moving, they were okay.”

It soon also became apparent that the vehicles’ aluminum bumpers wouldn’t hold up to the wear and tear and would soon need steel bumpers. But Gurr took it all in stride. “Everything that goes

1. Radiator Springs Racers Every year each car on Radiator Springs Racers will drive approximately 36,000 miles. That’s some yearly road trip!

3. Cruise on Over to Meet Cruz A new racing star is cruising into Cars Land this summer. Be sure to race over to meet Cruz Ramirez from Cars 3 and snap a photo with her.

wrong is a lesson. It’s how you learn and move on.” Gurr says. Autopia wasn’t the only place in Disneyland® Park to get wheels. In 1956, two “Horseless Carriages” were introduced on Main Street, U.S.A. The idea was sparked when someone approached Walt with antique cars for sale. But Gurr knew it would be more trouble to maintain the older cars than to build new vehicles that looked antique. And once again, he could immediately see the style of car that fit the era of Main Street, U.S.A.

“I keyed off the architecture so the cars became part of the overall storytelling,” Gurr says. “Vehicles were another way to deepen the Guests’ experience.”

Next, Walt wanted a double decker Omnibus. A visit to Travel Town in Griffith Park in Los Angeles gave Gurr the reference details of such a bus. Knowing a full-size bus wouldn’t be able to navigate the street, Gurr created a 5/8 scale vehicle. The Omnibus carries

up to 45 passengers and makes a great place to enjoy the sights and sounds of Main Street, U.S.A., from on high.

When Gurr pointed out to Walt that Main Street had a fire station, but no fire engine, the next move was inevitable. In 1958, a gleaming, bright-red fire engine with a solid brass radiator began cruising Main Street. Gurr still recalls the fun of driving the fire engine on the freeway from The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, where it was built, to Disneyland® Park in Anaheim, approximately 33 miles away.

All of these “new antique” vehicles were assembled at The Walt Disney Studios shops and no one had ever constructed anything like them before. “I guess we did pretty well,” Gurr says. “They’re still running today.”

Take a spin on Autopia or ride the vehicles on Main Street, U.S.A., when you redeem your Disney Rewards Dollars toward tickets for Disneyland® Park.1

“When it came to designing vehicles for the Park, Gurr was Walt’s ‘go-to guy.’ There didn’t seem to be any vehicle he couldn’t design.”

Pandora— The World of Avatar

To help you get the most out of your expedition to the otherworldly moon of Pandora, home of the Na’vi people and a place completely in tune with nature, we’ve compiled a guide to the experiences you won’t want to miss during your visit.

The awe-inspiring Valley of Mo’ara Your journey on Pandora begins when you cross an old bridge into the Valley of Mo’ara, a place of amazing beauty. Helpful guides, including Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE) experts, Pandora Conservation Initiative (PCI) scientists and expatriates who have chosen to make Pandora their home,

are happy to answer questions and illuminate your journey with fun facts along the way.

Stroll under (yes, we said “under”) fantastic floating mountains and a sparkling waterfall cascading down their sides. As you traverse lush jungles, keep your eyes open for glimpses of unique insects and animals such as stingbats, one of Pandora’s many strange creatures. (Note: We highly recommend experiencing the Valley of Mo’ara both by day and by night when the land comes alive with a bioluminescent glow.)

Along your way, you’ll also see evidence of the hand of man in Pandora’s past, including an abandoned helicopter and buildings from the days when the Resources Development Administration (RDA) set up irresponsible operations causing extensive damage across Pandora. Evidence of the Na’vi, the tall, slender, blue-skinned native inhabitants of Pandora, can be seen in enormous woven totems and a giant drum circle you can interact with. A River to RememberYour path leads to a cave guarded by a Na’vi sentry. There, reed boats crafted by the Na’vi from giant reeds, await to take you sweeping down a mystical river. As your journey unfolds, the Na’vi Shaman of Songs fills the air with a mysterious melody that awakens the glowing forest plants which respond to her. Voted a favorite by ACE guides, this beautiful journey pays homage to the Pandoran rainforest in a way that will fill you with awe and transform your vision of nature’s beauty and value.

A Flight of PassageWho doesn’t want to ride a banshee, one of the most important and culturally significant animals to the Na’vi? The only way to make this possible is for you to genetically link to an Avatar which will sync with a banshee and make your Flight of Passage possible. As you dive, soar and plunge over vast, spectacular landscapes, all your senses are awakened by the sights, sounds and even the scents of Pandora. “This flight is like a rite of passage,” says PCI scientist, Dr. Ogden.

Banish Hunger Pangs Pandoran StyleEvery adventurer needs to stop and refresh occasionally, and you can find delicious Pandoran-inspired cuisine at Satu’li Canteen. Feeling thirsty from your travels? Enjoy a selection of sparkling Pandoran-style libations at Pongu Pongu (which means party party in Na’vi).

We hope your personal exploration of Pandora—The World of Avatar brings you adventure and excitement and that your visit is one that transforms your spirit.

Style So Good, It’s Bad“Descendants 2” rocks with new music, baddies and hot styles by costume designer, Kara Saun.

Rocking music and dance numbers, a great story and fascinating characters costumed in iconic styles made “Descendants” a Disney Channel mega hit, and now the excitement continues bigger, and badder than ever when “Descendants 2” debuts on Friday, July 21, on Disney Channel.

When Mal returns to the Isle of the Lost, she finds her archenemy Uma, the daughter of Ursula from The Little Mermaid, in control. Portrayed by China Anne McClain, Uma wants to break the barrier between the Isle of the Lost

and Auradon and seek revenge after being imprisoned on the Isle. It’s up to Mal and her friends to stop them. “I had a blast creating the costumes for ‘Descendants 2,’” says costume designer, Kara Saun. “We have all these fantastic pirate looks—pirate punk, bohemian pirate, pirate chic. I call it my ‘Scallywag Swag.’”

To create each character’s unique style, Kara Saun starts with their villainous parents from the original Disney films for inspiration. Then the leg work begins. “I hunt for
