The intelligent policies implemented via the Software Defined Data Centre (SDDC) have aggregated compute, storage, networking, security and availability services to help deliver and automatically manage storage and networking resources.
The result? Reduced costs and quicker time to market allow your people and resources to spend more time on creating and delivering new innovative and revenue generating services.

STORAGE STRATEGY – CAPGEMINI OVERVIEW

CURRENT PAIN POINTS
• Low utilization rates drive up storage costs • Too much capacity on high end storage reduces ROI • Too many tools required to manage heterogeneous storage • Complexity and overlap across environments lead to extended
resolution time for migrations, outages, day to day management • Inadequate reporting results in reactive management to capacity and
performance related issues • Lack of management and usage reporting affects chargeback and
recovery of unallocated charges

CASE STUDY: HOW DOES SRO HELP CAPGEMINI ADDRESS THE PAIN POINTS
SRO manages application complexity by modelling application SLAs to storage types to ensure performance, lower TCO and change procurement trends.
SRO provides highly effective and automated capacity and utilization management to ensure growth and performance is managed according to best practice.
With SRO procurement works more efficiently. We are able to best match storage and networking resources to specific business and technical requirements resulting in reduced costs whilst protecting performance and service levels. This will save Capgemini $3.7m in 2015 and $20m over the next 3 – 5 years. With SRO we were able to show how a PB of storage supporting an SAP application for a new customer could be re-modelled to deliver the required level of performance on a different class of storage resulting in Capex savings of 30% - $2.1m
With SRO we continue to lower TCO, change procurement trends and improve service levels.

CASE STUDY: HOW DOES SRO HELP CAPGEMINI ADDRESS THE PAIN POINTS
SRO manages and reports storage usage ensuring effective chargeback
SRO improves operational efficiency and reporting through automated health, compliance and governance practices
With SRO Capgemini were able to recover over $1.1m of unallocated storage charges as a direct result of improved usage and charge back reporting. This related to >10% of the total storage charge.
With SRO we achieved higher levels of automation and customization leading to significant improvements in productivity and TCO. By the end of 2015 our support ratios for standardized storage technology will be close to 1500TB per FTE.
In 12 months Capgemini has deployed SRO to more than 60 customers supported by 16 data centres in 6 counties successfully simplifying one of the
most complex global deployments across the planet

SRO – CAPGEMINI WORLD WIDE ROLLOUT
• SRO monitors all components that draw on storage capacity, including virtual machines and more
• SRO derives the metrics and key performance indicators needed to ensure proper storage resources provide optimum storage delivery.

Global Dashboard Global Availability and Capacity Trend Analysis
• We perform enterprise wide capacity trend analysis to determine storage growth rates by region and when new capacity is needed.
• Context sensitive tables allow drill-down into the details about LUN Consumers and Disk Contributors at the local level.
• At the local level, you can predict when virtual machines or physical hosts will run out of capacity plus you will avoid the frantic request to expand or create new data stores.

Regional Dashboard End-to-End Topology
SCENARIO: The DBA walks up and says, “My database is performing poorly.“ Do you: A) Tell him to stop complaining, B) Open all of the various points of management for your infrastructure, C) Summon SRO, D) Blame the network guys? ANSWER: Summon SRO: it enables rapid root cause analysis of performance issues at all levels. Take a look at the database VM to see if disk IO is experiencing a bottleneck. Looks good? Export any report to a PDF, image, or email it directly to the DBA, manager, and other curious people. You can even create a custom view that contains tables, charts, and graphs from other reports by simply pinning them to build a dashboard. Drill into the details of the virtual disk performance to get a better picture. That’s odd, the latency is high but IOPS are low, then suddenly latency drops off and IOPS spike to over 30k. Why? VNX FAST Cache kicked in and began servicing the workload from flash in real-time.
PERFORMANCE AND PERFORMANCE TRENDING

• As excessive capacity sits underutilized on high-end storage, and as consumption moves toward expense-based operations, organizations continually seek cost-optimized resource-as-a-service offerings. With SRO we find the best match for storage and networking resources to specific business and technical requirements. SRO ascends to the next level in determining application best-fit solutions at the best price.
• What is Storage Resource Optimization ‘as a service’? A repeatable, rapid deployment ‘proof of value’ process, providing insight into customer application storage infrastructure and, ultimately, highlighting opportunities for CapEx and OpEx efficiencies. SRO leverages the capabilities of SRM and experience from the world wide Capgemini SRM program to demonstrate best match storage solutions for the customer environment and applications.
• Why SRO? Customers frequently lack end to end insight across their application to storage environments, are often reactive to application and business demands and are unable to best match resources to such needs.
• Customers want to reduce TCO / Improve ROI to meet the demands of their business
• Customers need a way to procure more efficiently and make the best choices at the right times.
• Customers see value in pro-active management; reactive management is costly and inefficient

How do we deliver SRO to the customer? – SRO is delivered as a service. – No need for the customer to invest time and money in deploying the software and
effort to establish ways of improving storage efficiency and savings. – Capgemini will plan for, deploy the software, undertake the discovery and analysis
and produce the high value assessment. – Capgemini will even deploy the physical and virtual infrastructure if preferred by the
customer. – Capgemini will agree on the scope of the assessment with the customer – typical
scope might be a number of applications connected to a number of hosts on a defined storage set in a single data center.
– This scenario is generally sufficient to define a number of business outcomes and areas for improvement that can be considered or extended into a wider and more encompassing assessment.

• Storage Resource Optimization – scope of work Most businesses experience inefficiencies within their storage estates, have deployed high cost solutions to meet performance and services demands, and are unable to accurately reflect usage. Capgemini together with their customers use SRO to discover and address these pain points. In most cases a 6 week ‘proof of value’ exercise using SRO in a defined environment (data centre, set of applications) will show where cost savings and better decisions around solutions and investments can be made.

Following the data collection and analysis phase, a high value assessment is produced to show business and technical outcomes with proposed savings and improvements. Business Outcomes – Address customer pain points customer specific drivers - Recover over-provisioned storage buy less, improve utilization and optimization of existing assets - Tier down over-specified storage buy differently and more efficiently - Transform storage create efficiencies and cost reductions - Improve chargeback and recover unallocated charges address revenue leakage - improve Service Levels mean time to identification (MTTI). health checks and compliance
