“I really enjoyed my time as an intern and liked talking with the residents. I love Stonehill’s sense of community. Everyone is always saying hi and asking how your day is going, and it just feels brighter here.”

Cailee is a lifelong Dubuquer and is engaged to be married next October. She has a Jack Russell terrier named Lucy.

Stonehill Celebrates 41 Years

In July of each year, we have a special Mass to celebrate the anniversary of our founding by the Sisters of St. Francis. This year Stonehill celebrates 41 years of service to the community.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque originated in Herford, Germany, in 1864 where the needs of the homeless and hungry children touched the heart and conscience of the congregation’s foundress, Mother Xavier Termehr.

In 1878, the Franciscan Sisters arrived in Dubuque and started the St. Francis Home. In 1978, Stonehill Care Center was opened. Today we are Dubuque’s preferred provider in senior care. We are blessed with the dedication and kindness of so many staff, family members, and supporters. We have been fortunate to continue this legacy the Franciscan Sisters started so many years ago.

Summer is officially here! July is always an exciting month for Stonehill Franciscan Services, as it is the month that we celebrate our anniversary. The Stonehill Franciscan Services Health Center (then known as the Care Center) opened in July 1978. We continue to honor the values we were founded on by the Sisters of St. Francis: compassion, hospitality, reverence, and stewardship. Many community partners and supporters help make our services possible and I’d like to take a moment to say thank you!

Thank you to the Dubuque Racing Association (DRA) for the grant we received to purchase furniture and comfort items for the family lounge we are creating on the ground floor level our Palliative Care and Hospice dedicated unit. We are grateful for their support in making this possible. We want all family, friends, and visitors to feel welcome when they come to Stonehill.

Thank you to all the donors who helped raise just over $6,100 to purchase an additional NuStep machine for the Stonehill Wellness Center.

Thank you to the supporters who donated to the 2nd floor renovations and creation of private dining room. We know how important this will be to the residents of 2nd floor who will no longer have to wait to ride an elevator for meals. We hope this will truly assist with our value of hospitality.

I would also like to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who made the San Damiano Chapel project possible, it was one year ago in June that we dedicated the Chapel and new altar and it is a day that will forever be in my memories. May everyone who helped make that project possible know what a blessing they have been to the residents, staff, and visitors of Stonehill.

As Stonehill continues to make renovations to the campus you will hear more about the ways in which we are raising support to make this possible. If you ever have questions about Stonehill’s fundraising efforts please reach out to me at 563.690.9623. There are many ways to give to our mission and support projects and benevolent care of residents. Thank you!

May you have a summer of blessings and happy moments!

Someone Who Cares

I came across a 1995 Ziggy cartoon, authored by Tom Wilson. The cartoon shows Ziggy slouched down in a plush recliner with an exhausted expression on his face, while talking on the phone. The caption reads: “Hello, operator . . . I’d like to place a call to someone who cares.”

I wonder if the message of that cartoon communicates exactly what so many residents within Stonehill feel when they press their call-light. Each resident ultimately wants “someone who cares.” If you are the person answering that call-light could you genuinely say, “I’m that someone who cares.” Maybe it depends on whose call-light you’re answering.

Just who is that person that fits the description of “someone who cares”? A good answer is found in the story once told by the author and lecturer, Leo Buscaglia. He talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four-year-old child whose next-door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.”

Within Stonehill, “someone who cares” is any person who can say about their time spent with a resident, “. . . I just helped him/her cry, . . . or walk, laugh, eat, drink, bathe, dress, sing, pray, dance, exercise, or have their call-light answered promptly.” Every single task is a caring act, whether it’s met with an expression of gratitude or not.

Over the past many months, I can’t help but think about the tremendous amount of financial support that Stonehill has received to expand its mission of providing compassionate care and quality health services. The new building areas of service and the updating plans for current living areas speak well for Stonehill to be the number one choice for health care.

What these successes show is a great deal of faith in Stonehill’s caregiving plans. But even more importantly, it speaks well of all Stonehill staff who know that without quality compassionate care, ALL can be lost. The message of Psalm 145:9 speaks to the heart of our mission, “The LORD is good to all, he has compassion on all He has made.”

Stonehill is striving to create compassionate caregivers who can be described as “someone who cares.” They are going to be “someone who cares” even when challenged with the unlovely, the unattractive, the irritating, the uncongenial, and the downright painful. They are going to be caregivers who are ready to service with compassionate care just like the little boy did for his neighbor. They are going to be compassionate caregivers who can proudly state, as the little boy did, “I just helped him/her cry.” Or perhaps best said, “I just help them to live the kind of life they love, no matter what.”
