Stonehill Francis-Hen HomeWe have a new a chicken coop and two baby chickens living in our backyard! They will be with us through the summer and early fall, spend the winter away, and be back next spring.

The chickens arrived and were welcomed with a special blessing by Fr. Ben Nakrumah on May 12. Residents watched from their windows and the blessing was shared on the Stonehill TV Channel for all. The celebration even included an honorary “Chicken Dance!”

Activities is facilitating visits to the backyard for residents to see and feed the chickens.

Special thanks to Carolyn Timmerman (A.K.A. “Mother Hen”) and Morgan Schadel, Activities Coordinators for bringing this great idea to life. It has brought joy and excitement to the residents and staff. Also a big thank you to Matt Theisen from Theisens for donating the supplies for the coop.

The names of the chickens are being selected from suggestions submitted by the residents and will be announced soon!

May was a fun month of bringing some delicious treats and an innovative programming style to all of you. Live Bingo and Live Kentucky Derby Horse Races on the Stonehill Channel along with margaritas on Cinco de Mayo day were a hit! The afternoon treat of pizza from Pizza Hut was well received. Fridays Cocktails on the Road has become a favorite among many! The hallway activities of card bingo, crafts, broomstick bowling, exercise, Gambling with the Casino Ball and LCR will be happening again along with some new actitivities we will be trying out.

Resident Council - Monthly Resident Council meeting will be returning in a different format, it will be held on the Stonehill Channel live at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24th. Each living area has a Suggestion/Question Box for residents to submit items to and we will work to have responses to questions.

Backyard Gardens - We will be planting flowers, vegetables, and herbs, along with the seedling flowers many of you have planted in the backyard and on the Memory Care patio on Wednesday, June 3rd!

LIVE Bingo on the Stonehill Channel - Live Bingo was such a hit last month we will have it again on Wednesday, June 24th at 2:30 p.m.

Memorial Day Program - Special Thank you to resident George Fry’s son-in-law Dick Bridges for coordinating with the American Legion and Bob Feldman for making a Memorial Day Salute to the veterans of Stonehill that was shown on the Stonehill Channel.

Share a Precious Moment - We invite families to mail the Activities Department a Precious Moment Memory Letter about your loved one. Please address the envelope Attn: Activities along with the Resident’s Name. Activities will deliver a Precious Moment statue along with your letter to your loved one. Activities will assist with reading your letter to your loved one if needed.

Crafting with Jean & Kathy - A BIG thank you goes out to Jean & Kathy who volunteer monthly offering a craft class. At this time they are not able to come and craft with us, so they prepped several crafts and dropped them off for Activities staff to do with you!

Video Chatting Update - Stonehill has chosen Skyping, FaceTime and Zoom as the technology options for video chatting. We are working on having each nurse station have its own Stonehill email address that families will send a meeting invite for video chatting. More information about this will be emailed out to families soon. So presently, if your loved one lives on 3SE, you may email a meeting invite to: [email protected]. If your residents lives on any other unit please email a meeting invite to: [email protected]. The day of your video chat we ask that you call the nurse station where your loved one lives and ask them to take the take the iPad to your loved one. This will allow staff time to get the iPad to them and set up.

Father’s Day - We will be celebrating the fathers and men among us on Sunday, June 21st by serving up brats & beers to them! Thank you to the Stonehill Auxialry for funding this event!

Pizza Picnics - We will be having Happy Joe’s Pizza Picnics by units starting this month and into next month. We will practice social distancing while enjoying some fresh air and delicious pizza! Residents will need to sign up for this through Activities.

Outdoor Visits - We have added additional weekly outdoor visits by units as the weather is getting nicer! The schedule for times is posted on the Stonehill Channel. COVID-19/Coronavirus Family Updates

Guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires Stonehill Franciscan Services to provide updated reports of COVID-19 in our health center to residents, resident representatives, and their families when either a single confirmed infection of COVID-19 has been identified, or when three or more residents or staff experience new-onset of respiratory symptoms occurring within 72 hours, by 5 p.m. the next calendar day. These reports may be provided to you in writing, either in a letter, through our website and/or via e-mail. Moving forward COVID-19 reporting will be provided to our residents either by letter or the Stonehill Health Center Channel. Resident representative and families can view our website www.stonehilldbq.com/coronavirus at any time and will receive an email following the guidance above. In addition, a weekly cumulative summary of COVID- 19 will be shared on Fridays. We cannot provide information that will personally identify a resident or staff member but will keep you up-to-date on cumulative COVID activity.

Please know that we are taking all actions we can to prevent the risk of transmission of COVID-19. We are screening staff temperature before the start of every shift and at the end of their shift, as well as assessing both staff and residents for any respiratory symptoms. All staff are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), as appropriate. We are currently isolating new admissions to a designated wing until a 14-day period has passed. We have updated our visitor restrictions and resident activities. Stonehill continues to have a no visitor policy (which includes visits outdoors) until further notice. All information on precautions can be found on our website at www.stonehilldbq.com/coronavirus. Finally, we want to assure family members that we will communicate all updates about your loved ones to the assigned resident representative we have on file via e-mail. If you need to update your e-mail address for the primary contact please call your social work staff to do so.

Outpatient Therapy

Stonehill Franciscan Services, in partnership with Select Rehabilitation, reopened outpatient therapy services beginning Monday, May 18, 2020. Out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of patients and staff alike, Outpatient Therapy is only taking one appointment at a time. Patients will be screened for respiratory symptoms and asked to wear a mask during their appointment. Additionally, we ask that anyone experiencing fever, cough, or other respiratory symptoms stay home. For additional information or to schedule an appointment, please call 563.690.9637.

COVID-19 Emergency Supplies Fundraiser

We know these are difficult times for everyone as we try to navigate a new normal amid the coronavirus pandemic in our country. We would like to thank those who have been so very generous during this time. We have had many donors who have given to our special emergency supplies fundraiser and helped with bringing new activity options to residents across our campus. We have also had very generous in-kind donations of face masks, face shields, meals, gift cards, and other supplies.

A special thank you to the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque for funding from the Disaster Relief Fund that helped us purchase new iPads to use to help residents with telehealth visits with their healthcare providers. This has truly been a wonderful tool to assist during this time.

Great Give Day

Thank you to those who gave on Great Give Day on May 14! This 24-hour online giving event, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque helped raise $1,170 for Stonehill and earn $106 in matching dollars. These funds will help with our COVID-19 response as well as support the Assisi Village expansion to add assisted living with memory care to our continuum.

Wellness Center UpdateWe are happy to announce the Stonehill Wellness Center will re-open on June 1st.

Things will look a bit different than you are used to for awhile. These guidelines will be in place for June and then re-evaluated. Please know these precautions are in place for the safety of all members and staff.

The hours will be 7am-3pm Monday-Friday.Appointments will be required, and only 20 members will be in the facility at a time. Beginning Friday, May 29 you will be able to call 48 hours ahead to schedule a 45-minute workout session. Please call 563.690.9640. Each member will complete a screening questionnaire about symptoms and have their temperature taken. We ask that if you have a fever, cough, or other respiratory symptoms that you please stay home. Only individual appointments are allowed, there will be no group fitness classes at this time. We will re-evaluate this at the end of June. By order of Governor Reynolds we will not be opening the Hydroworx pool or sauna in June. Members are asked to continue to practice social distancing, maintaining 6 feet between members, as well as good hand hygiene. Hand sanitizer will be available. Answers at the bottom of page 7.

Pastoral Care

Many years ago, in the middle of the night, I was awakened and realized my mom was shaking me. She frantically repeated, “Fran, something’s wrong with dad, I can’t wake him up.” We immediately hurried to his bedside. We realized he was gone. His unexpected death at 52 years of life caused heartbreak, emptiness, loneliness, and hurt beyond measure for our entire family. It was days and weeks of tears. What was going to happen to our family farm and more importantly to our family; and to me. For the first time I needed heartfelt “pastoral care.”

Suddenly, in the midst of living our daily life of activities, tragedy happens—death of a loved one, loss of a home, divorce, a car accident, a permanent disability, cancer, COVID-19, and so on. Much of our social and physical activity stops. Our need for emotional, spiritual activity comes to the surface. There is a desperate need in our life for each other, for God, for prayer and reflection, for worship, for silence, even the simple pleasures of music, poetry, and a social gathering of friends and family. It’s a desperate need for “pastoral care.”

Christians believe that God created everything in the world and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. They also believe that the Holy Spirit is available to lead and guide them in life. Pastoral care simply involves extending the love of Christ to others. It is giving the emotional and spiritual presence and prayer support to others in their pain, loss, and anxiety, as well as in their triumphs, joys and victories.

Stonehill has a Pastoral Care Committee, yet it is the responsibility of all Christians to provide pastoral care. Each day at Stonehill, it is our shared focus to nurture each person’s spirit whom we encounter. Together, each one of us helps restore hope, faith, and love in the hearts of those who either live or work as God’s followers within Stonehill. Spiritual growth takes time, like human growth. So, we don’t give up, even with our failed attempts. We keep asking God to make us holy in this particular time and place. We keep praying that God will make us people of faith so as to trust in His loving care.

Perhaps pastoral care is needed now more than ever, living in the shadow of COVID-19.

Every person has his or her own particular needs at Stonehill. Pastoral care is bringing Christ’s compassion, reverence for life, hospitality, and spiritual stewardship to one another. Our common focus is upon the healing, supporting, and offering of prayerful hope to one another. That focus is evident in the printed words showcased to others from our 3rd floor Stonehill windows—WE STAND TOGETHER EVEN THOUGH WE ARE APART.

I remain grateful for the pastoral care I received from others at the time of my father’s death, and in the many tragedies and triumphs, deaths and resurrections, and loses and gains that have followed since. Why would I not offer the same pastoral care to those I live and work among each day? The challenge remains of how each one of us can deliver pastoral care to every person’s circumstance or situation. Pastoral care is human GRIEF receiving divine GRACE.
