Crack Stitching

Masonry Beaming

Crack stitching bars are heavy duty helical bars(8kN+)and are ideal for the masonry repair of wallcracks where sheer strength is an issue. This 6mmdiameter wall crack stitching reinforcement offers extraperformance to other helical bar type products bysignificantly increasing the sheer, tensile and flexuralstrength of cracked masonry walls.

The hi-fin design on our Crack Stitching also make the ThorHelical Remedial Crack Stitching products ideal for groutinginto mortar beds to retrospectively reinforce distressedmasonry and to control cracking by distributing forces backinto the structure.

The unique Thor Heliforce Masonry Beaming system ofstructural reinforcement and repair is at the heart of ThorHelical Remedial advance remedial strategies. Itprovides a rapid versatile cost-effective means ofrestoring structural integrity to buildings and structureswhere the masonry has failed and lost its load bearingcapabilities. In combination with other Thor HelicalRemedial ties and restraints it can provide acomprehensive system of structural repair andstabilisation.

How it works

Where masonry has cracked and failed as a result of groundmovement, weathering of increased loads and stresses, theThor Heliforce masonry beaming system provides stress freebed joint reinforcement which ties the masonry togetherwhilst creating deep masonry beams which distribute thestructural loads. Other ties and fixings provide appropriatelateral and vertical restraint to complete the system, which isapplicable to all types of masonry structure.

Stress Free overpinning

For many situations the Thor Heliforce Masonry Beamingsystem offers a structurally sound alternative at significantlyless cost to mass underpinning and other traditional repairmethods. In cases of severe ground movement, fullunderpinning is extremely expensive and may actually causefurther problems. Even localised piling may be a risk. However, with the use of Thor Helical Remedial’s Shire Pile

nature also allows the capability of facilitatingmovements in a structure and bridges hairline cracks.

The cured membrane is permanently elastomeric anddoes not embrittle or crack on ageing and generallyprovides a tough impenetrable barrier.

The various Thor Helical remedial sections are directlyproportionate to one another, providing opportunity for crosscorrelation of performance characteristics to be used inspecification design.

system under the building corners at selected points the ThorHeliforce beams can be used to create girder beams in themasonry which form a clear span between the pads toredistribute the loads, reducing considerably the overall costs, disturbance to the ground, the building and its occupants.

Correctly diagnosing the problem.

In situations where there is clear evidence of groundmovement such as subsidence, settlement, heave or slipprofessional advice should be sought. A qualified structuralengineer who understands building movement and stressescan ensure that the faults are correctly diagnosed andpropose the appropriate Thor Helical Remedial repair strategywith the solution being tailored to suit the specific needs ofthe building.

Thor Helical Remedial have an extensive library of repairdetails for both cavity and solid walls using Thor HelicalRemedial Heliforce Bars, HD Heliforce Bars, Grout Ties, Drive Fix Ties and CD Ties.

Page 12: Stone stone Refurbishment

Stone Refurbishment can offer a series of coatings to notonly extend the overall life time of concrete structures, butalso to aesthetically enhance concrete in any situationwhere surface imperfections have occurred . The thinscreed application can be used both vertically andhorizontally to provide a fair faced finish.

A major advantage of using a fairing coat is that it alsoprovides an enhanced freeze/thaw resistance and aprotection from ingress of water, acid gasses and chlorides.

Our team of highly-skilled technicians use proven cementchemistry, microsillica, fibre and styrene acrylic copolymertechnology. The economical, low density polymer-modifiedcementitious mortar used by our team, which is supplied bythe industry’s highest-regarded engineers, can also prove tobe very cost effective.

Thermal ImagingInfra-red thermography is a non-contact temperaturemeasurement technique which allows temperaturedifferences in buildings to be accurately measured toenable the visual detection of weather, water ingress andmissing insulation. This allows for a planned maintenanceprogramme to be scheduled.

We provide a thorough analysis and compile survey reportsto develop planned maintenance and essentialrefurbishments.

This level of service and expertise combined with our accesscapabilities has seen Stone Refurbishment become one ofthe market leaders in this field.

Page 18: Stone stone Refurbishment

Cathodic ProtectionMetal dowels and cramps were often incorporated intraditional masonry structures to secure stones such as copings, parapets and cornices- that mightotherwise be prone to movement or displacement.

They were also widely used in ordinary ashlar walls to tierelatively thin stone facings back to the core. Dowels andcramps were also embedded in the facing itself to helpmaintain its structural integrity.

Cathodic protection has been applied to reinforcedconcrete to protect steel reinforcements from corrosion.More recently it has also been applied to iron and steelembedded in brick, masonry and stone in historicbuildings.

The systems work on the principle that corrosion is anelectrochemical reaction in which one part of a piece ofiron or steel acts as an anode, while adjacent metal actsas a cathode.

At the anode, corrosion occurs as iron gives up electronsand forms soluble iron ions. At the cathode, freeelectrons combine with water and oxygen to formhydroxide ions. In CP systems, the metal to be protectedis forced to act as the cathode, as on this side of thereaction the surface of the metal is unaffected by thereaction, preventing further corrosion.

When used to protect structural iron and steel, this isachieved by applying small DC electric currents, via thebuilding material. There are two methods of achievingthis, either sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP)or impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP).

The systems use sacrificial anodes (zinc, aluminium ormagnesium) placed in close proximity to the corrodingmetalwork and electrically connected to it. As thesacrificial anode corrodes, it generates a current thatpasses through the building material to provideprotection to the embedded metalwork. These types ofprotective measures are developed to allow a minimalinvasive technique to provide a solution to the ongoingeffects of iron and steel expansion.

More intrusive methods of protection can be provided viaspecialist coatings to abate the corrosion process wealso work with manufactures to develop theseapplications. 18

Royal Grammar School, GuildfordStone Technical Services was appointed to carry out significantwork at the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, Surrey. As wellas completing the refurbishment of the chimney stack on theGrade 1 listed building, which dates back to the 1500s, Stonecarried out general restoration work including the repair of theoriginal town boundary wall which involved lime mortar pointingusing specially-produced bricks.

Stone worked on the project, worth around £55,000 to thecompany, with conservation specialists from Guildford Council.

Managing director, Dave Stone said: “Our Southern office, whichwe opened last year, is really enhancing the business and isallowing us to grow the business further. Both of these newcontracts, which are incredibly significant to Stone, are thanks tothe team in the South.

The works we have been engaged to carry out on this unusual, prestigious building are both complex and sensitive due to theway in which each is used. There is a very real need for us tocomplete the important projects sensitively, without disturbingdaily life at the school, but thanks to our skilled team andworking practices, we are already underway with the projects topreserve the buildings for future use.”

St. Patricks Church, PatringtonA much-loved East Yorkshire church, dating back to the 15thCentury, is currently undergoing thousands of pounds worth ofrenovation to preserve its natural beauty. St Patrick’s Church inPatrington is said to be one of the greatest examples of theDecorated period of English architecture and features over 200carved faces of humans and animals. Stone Technical Services, a North East-based company, is carrying out high level spirerepairs and rebuilding, and specialised pinnacle renewal on thechurch. The company, which is working with Matthew ThomasArchitects in Alysham, Norfolk, also carried out extensive repairwork on St Patrick’s earlier this year following the much-publicised earthquake. Patrington was close to the epicentre andthe church suffered spire and pinnacle damage.

Sutton Bridge

24

Page 25: Stone stone Refurbishment

However, the bridge also required general restoration andrefurbishment of its damaged structure so Stone was given a 21 dayperiod at the end of June and into July to complete the project, which proved controversial in the local area as the bridge closureaffected many local businesses in the two small towns.

The project had to be carried out manually, due to its delicatestructure. Our CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme)heritage masons carried out the works efficiently, with the mainstayof the repair and restoration project involving the erection of amaking safe stage to make the bridge structure safe to work on andalso the installation of public safety barriers. And, as structuralintegrity was paramount for Sutton Bridge, specialist stainless steelties had to be installed to offer long-term protection from the severeconditions often faced by the Grade II listed bridge.

Stone Technical Services worked alongside East Riding Council, structural engineers Mason Clark from Leeds, York-based historicarchitects Ferrey and Mennim and Morrison Construction.

Bridging the gap - Sutton Bridge CompletionStone Technical Services has been praised for its efficientcompletion of repair and restoration work on Sutton Bridge in NorthYorkshire, which re-opened on Friday 23rd July following weeks ofrepairs. The long-awaited repairs to the bridge, which links thetowns of Elvington in North Yorkshire and Sutton-on-Derwent in EastRiding, had to be completed during a 21-day bridge closure periodto minimise disruption for local people. The Grade II listed bridgewas damaged during the winter months following a road accidentand, at the time, Stone Technical Services carried out emergencyrepairs to make the bridge safe.
