Page 2: Stone Mountain Adventures Brochure

At Stone Mountain Adventures, we believe that eachindividual should be challenged to step beyond his orher own abilities: to ride with confidence, to climbwith technique, to control the sail, or to bike onemore hill.

Stepping beyond one’s abilities also means personalgrowth: developing self reliance, trusting in newfriendships, and learning to be sensitive to the needsof a community.

As a small, noncompetitive adventure camp with 50 campers (ages 12-16) and17 staff, camp feels like a big family, full of good friends. We celebrate ourvictories, accept our short comings, and learn from both. As the days flow by,our philosophy of respect and sharing emerge. We learn respect for animals, the outdoors and one another. As strong individuals, we come together as afamily, learning and having fun together.

This is my first summerhere and everything wasgreat. I have met somany amazing peoplewho have taught me somuch in such a shorttime. I can’t wait tocome do this all againnext year!

The Farm HouseThe epicenter of camp, the farm houseis where the dining hall, the bathrooms, the kitchen and the camp office arelocated. The campers live in the sixcabins that surround the house.Nestled among rolling hills, thiscamp is also the year-round home ofdirectors Pam & Biff Houldin. Thefarm house & barn are 150 years oldand situated on 100 acres of rollinghills and forest land. Here are some of the reasons why:

• We are a small camp so everyone gets to know each other quickly.

• Our 14 friendly, enthusiastic and responsible staff reach out to new campers and make them feel welcome.

WWhhaattss iitt lliikkee ttoo bbee aa nneeww ccaammppeerr?? DDooeesseevveerryyoonnee aallrreeaaddyy kknnooww eeaacchh ootthheerr??It’s easy to be a new camper at SMA because there’s not alegacy to ‘fit into’ as a first time camper. The youngestperson arriving at camp is 12 and we only accept people upto age 16, so there’s always a friendly mix of old and newfaces. Stone Mountain Adventures is small and filled withdynamic campers hoping to make new friends. It feels likehome quickly.

DDoo II nneeeedd ttoo bbrriinngg eexxttrraa eeqquuiippmmeenntt??Not unless you can’t bear to part with your own tennis rac-quet or bike. We provide all of the helmets and specializedequipment necessary. (Horseback riders do need propershoes, however.)

AArree tthheerree eexxttrraa ccoossttss??No, we cover all expenses for laundry, rafting, the entrancefees to Hershey Park, ice skating, etc. Most people still bringa little spending money (approx. $30/week) for the AmishMarket, county fairs, etc.

When does camp usually fill enroll-ment?The first session usually fills early. We have had ‘WaitingLists’ form in December or start as late as February. With50 campers and a 50% return rate, that leaves about 12 newspaces for girls and 12 for guys each session. Call or e-mailus to find out about availability.

Staf

f

Our Star Quality StaffWe feel one of our greatest strengths is the staff we hireto be summer camp counselors. Dynamic, responsibleskillful fair & funny - our staff listens cares and treats youwith respect. They put the needs of the campers first.Campers often comment on the genuine friendships thatare formed, the magical memories that are shared, andthe feeling of family that’s created.

The average age of our counselors is 25. All staffmust be at least 21 years of age and have a minimumcertification in first aid and CPR.

Owners & DirectorsIn the 20+ years of owning and directing summer camps,we have kept to our promise of staying small. We believethat the camp’s small size directly affects the quality ofprogramming in the most positive way. We’re stillinvolved in the day to day activities, tending to the details, and always available for campers, staff and parents.

Our greatest concern is the safety of our campers andstaff. Our constant attention to their physical andemotional health is critical. We take precautions and thenworry anyway. Most people think we are crazy to turn ouryear round home into a summer family of 50 campers and14 staff but we would be crazy not to. It’s noisy, full oflife and a fantastically fun, healthy atmosphere for us allduring the summer.

The counselors were awesomethis year. They opened me upto so many new things andexperiences. I learned somuch from them, more thanthey realize.
